From the Pastor’s Desk
“Do You Love Me?”
On Tuesday of Holy Week, I stood with my brother Priests at
the Chrism Mass in St. John’s Cathedral to renew the
promises I made at my Ordination to serve the people of
God in fidelity and love. From time-to-time married couples,
though together for many years need to say those words: “I
love you,” to one another in order to remind themselves of
the special bond they share. In the Gospel this weekend,
Jesus asks Peter, not once, but three times: “Simon, son of
John, do you love me?” After the third time that our Lord
addresses this question to Peter, we get the sense that Peter
was getting upset because he responds: “Lord, you know all
things, you know that I love you!” Many who have studied
the Scriptures believe that Jesus asked Peter this question
three times to undo this same apostle’s denial of Him at the
time of His arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. Of all the
twelve apostles chosen by Jesus, Peter is one of the most
interesting in character. Originally a fisherman, Jesus calls
Peter and he immediately abandons his life’s work to be an
apostle. He was very impetuous and outspoken, at times
not thinking before he spoke. An example of this was when
Jesus first announced that He would suffer crucifixion and
death, Peter could not accept it and responded: “God forbid
that this should happen to you, Lord!” In turn, Jesus sharply
rebukes Peter for these words, comparing him to Satan for
failing to think as God does. Despite his flaws, Peter loved
Jesus and wanted to follow Him, even to the point of giving
his life. Returning temporarily to his former life as a
fisherman, today he fails to catch any fish but at the
command of Jesus Peter lowers his nets on the other side of
the boat only to realize the miracle of an enormous catch of
fish. In the readings taken from the Acts of the Apostles in
this Easter season we find that Peter, as well as the other
apostles, filled with the gifts of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost,
courageously proclaim the Paschal Mystery of the death and
resurrection in spite of difficulties and persecution. What a
contrast from the Peter who denies that he even knows
Jesus to the man who is now prepared to suffer dishonor
and death for the sake of Jesus. Like Peter, we too have our
ups and down in our journey with Christ. Our human
emotions are at times fickle: feeling enthusiastic on day, but
indifferent the next. To the risen Lord at the end of today’s
Gospel Peter says: “Lord, you know all things, you know that
I love you!” Jesus has called Peter out of sin and darkness
through His glorious cross and resurrection. We know the
risen Christ in the breaking of bread in the Eucharist. Each
time we take part in the Mass and receive Holy Communion
we receive the spiritual wisdom, strength and courage to
witness to Christ in our world. The risen Christ calls us, even
out of our sin, to new life and love in Him! Filled with His
grace, may we too like Peter say: “Lord, you know all things,
you know that I love you!”

¿Me amas?
El martes de Semana Santa, estuve con mis hermanos
sacerdotes en la Misa Crismal en la Catedral de San Juan
para renovar las promesas que hice en mi ordenación de
servir al pueblo de Dios con fidelidad y amor. De vez en
cuando, las parejas casadas, aunque estén juntas
durante muchos años, necesitan decirse esas palabras:
"Te amo", para recordarse a sí mismas el vínculo especial
que comparten. En el Evangelio de este fin de semana,
Jesús le pregunta a Pedro, no una, sino tres veces:
"Simón, hijo de Juan, ¿me amas?" Después de la tercera
vez que nuestro Señor dirige esta pregunta a Pedro,
tenemos la sensación de que Pedro se estaba
molestando porque responde: "¡Señor, tú sabes todas
las cosas, tú sabes que te amo!" Muchos de los que han
estudiado las Escrituras creen que Jesús le hizo esta
pregunta a Pedro tres veces para deshacer la negación
de este mismo apóstol en el momento de su arresto en
el huerto de Getsemaní. De todos los doce apóstoles
escogidos por Jesús, Pedro es uno de los más
interesantes en carácter. Originalmente un pescador,
Jesús llama Pedro e inmediatamente abandona el
trabajo de su vida para ser un apóstol. Era muy
impetuoso y franco, a veces no pensaba antes de
hablar. Un ejemplo de esto fue cuando Jesús anunció
por primera vez que sufriría la crucifixión y la muerte,
Pedro no pudo aceptarlo y respondió: "¡Dios no lo quiera
que te suceda esto, Señor!" A su vez, Jesús reprende
duramente a Pedro por estas palabras, comparándolo
con Satanás por no pensar como Dios lo hace. A pesar
de sus defectos, Pedro amaba a Jesús y quería seguirlo,
hasta el punto de dar su vida. Volviendo temporalmente
a su antigua vida de pescador, hoy no logra pescar ningún
pez, pero por orden de Jesús, Pedro baja sus redes al otro
lado de la barca solo para darse cuenta del milagro de
una enorme captura de peces. En las lecturas tomadas
de los Hechos de los Apóstoles en este tiempo de Pascua
encontramos que Pedro, así como los demás apóstoles,
llenos de los dones del Espíritu Santo en Pentecostés,
proclaman con valentía el misterio pascual de la muerte
y la resurrección a pesar de las dificultades y las
persecuciones. ¡Qué contraste entre el Pedro que
incluso niega que conoce a Jesús y el hombre que ahora
está preparado para sufrir deshonra y muerte por causa
de Jesús! Al igual que Pedro, nosotros también tenemos
nuestros altibajos en nuestro camino con
Cristo. Nuestras emociones humanas son a veces
volubles: nos sentimos entusiasmados un día, pero
indiferentes al siguiente. Al Señor resucitado, al final del
Evangelio de hoy, Pedro le dice: "Señor, tú sabes todas
las cosas, tú sabes que te amo". Jesús ha llamado a
Pedro a salir del pecado y las tinieblas a través de su
gloriosa cruz y resurrección. Conocemos a Cristo
resucitado en la fracción del pan en la Eucaristía. Cada
vez que participamos en la Misa y recibimos la Sagrada
Comunión, recibimos la sabiduría espiritual, la fuerza y el
coraje para dar testimonio de Cristo en nuestro
mundo. ¡Cristo resucitado nos llama, incluso fuera de
nuestro pecado, a una nueva vida y amor en Él! Llenos
de su gracia, que también nosotros, como Pedro,
digamos: "Señor, tú conoces todas las cosas

Mother’s Day Novena Masses
On Mother’s Day, May 11th, all our Masses will be offered for our
living and deceased. Intention envelopes and cards to send to
the living mothers will be available after all masses this weekend.
All names will be placed on the altar for all masses. A $5.00
offering is asked for each name.
ESL Classes
ESL classes have resumed. The Advanced Classes meet on
Monday and the Beginner’s classes meet on Tuesday from
6:30-8:00 pm in the Connolly Center.

O Father, in Your mercy, hear Your children's pleas. As we prepare
for the Jubilee of 2025, renew our faith, increase the virtues of
hope and charity in us, and help us be witnesses of Your love in
the world.

We praise You, Lord, for Your infinite goodness. In the upcoming
Jubilee, open our eyes to the beauty of Your creation so that our

I kneel before you, O Virgin Mother of God, Our
Lady of Guadalupe, the compassionate mother of
all who love you, cry to you, seek you, and trust in
you. I plead for the Church at a time of great trial
and danger for her. As you came to the rescue of
the Church at Tepeyac in 1531, please intercede for
the Sacred College of Cardinals gathered in Rome
to elect the Successor of Saint Peter, Vicar of
Christ, Shepherd of the Universal Church.
At this tumultuous time for the Church and for
the world, plead with your Divine Son that the
Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, His Mystical
Body, will humbly obey the promptings of the Holy
Spirit. Through your intercession, may they choose
the most worthy man to be Christ’s Vicar on earth.
With you, I place all my trust in Him Who alone is
our help and salvation. Amen.

Me arrodillo ante ti, oh, Virgen Madre de Dios,
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, Madre compasiva
de todos los que te aman y te claman, te buscan y
en ti confían. Suplico por la Iglesia en un momento
de gran prueba y peligro para ella. Así como
acudiste al rescate de la Iglesia en el Tepeyac en
1531, intercede por el Sagrado Colegio Cardenalicio
reunido en Roma reunido para elegir al Sucesor de
San Pedro, Vicario de Cristo, Pastor de la Iglesia
Universal.
En este momento tumultuoso para la Iglesia y
para el mundo, ruega a tu Divino Hijo que los
