“Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.”
We give praise and thanks to God for the graces and blessings He has given us!
On this First
Sunday of Lent, we are invited to reflect on the temptation of Jesus in the desert
, as described in Luke
4:1-13. Just as Jesus spent forty days in the wilderness
preparing for His ministry, we too enter this
sacred season of
penance, prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving. The number “forty” in the Bible symbolizes
a period of testing and purification, a theme that is especially meaningful during Lent. It is a time for us
to
examine our hearts, resist temptation, and grow closer to God. In the desert
, Jesus faced temptations
aimed at undermining His trust in God’s plan.
Through prayer, fasting, and reliance of Scripture, He
was able to remain faithful and resist the devil’s offers. Lent invites us to follow His example
. Just as
Jesus fasted, we are called to give up something that might distract us from God. Fasting is not about
self-punishment but about making space for God and training ourselves to rely
on His strength rather
than the comforts of the world. As Jesus reminds us, “Man shall not live by bread alone
” (Luke 4:4).
Our true nourishment comes from God, not
from worldly things. In addition
to fasting, Lent is a time to
add spiritual
practices such as prayer, Scripture
reading, and almsgiving. Prayer helps us grow closer to
God, aligning our hearts with His will. Scripture strengthens us in times of temptation and keeps us
focused on the
Lord’s Word. Almsgiving is an opportunity to serve others, reflecting the love and
compassion of Christ. Through these three
practices fasting, prayer, and almsgiving
we are called to
purify our hearts, grow in holiness, and become more faithful disciples of Jesus.
As we embark on out
Lenten journey, it is helpful to make use of modern tools to support our spiritual growth.
Apps like
Hallow, Ascencion Press, and Word on Fire
offer wonderful resources for Lenten prayers
, reflections,
and challenges. These tools provide daily meditations and Scripture-based exercises that help us
stay
spiritually engaged throughout this holy season, enhancing our prayer life and drawing us closer
to
Christ. Lent is a time to remember that, just as Jesus overcame temptation in the desert,
we too
can find
strength in God’s Word, prayer, and acts of service. May this season
of Lent lead us to a deeper faith
and prepare us to celebrate the joy of the Resurrection at Easter,
Please invite someone to Mass today
St. Philip Neri, pray for us.
May God bless you all.

Spiritual Adoption – Sheen Style
In 1973, in response to the Roe vs Wade Decision, Abp. Sheen
encouraged Catholics to pray a short prayer daily for 9 months
in the name of a specific baby. He believed such “spiritual
adoption” could thwart the culture of death. On March 22-23,
we will hold our parish Spiritual Adoption Program. Please join
us in praying the short prayer until Christmas Day and follow the
development of your baby in the bulletin. God alone who that
baby is, hopefully in heaven you will meet the person who was
spared by your prayers.
