aboutthebookduetoitslengthyappearanceandcoverdesign,butafterreadinganotherTowlesnovel,Idecidedtogiveitatry.Despitemyinitialreservations,thestoryengagedmewellenoughtokeepturningthepages.However,thereweretwosignificantdrawbacks:thecharacterofDuchess,whoannoyedme,andthemisleadingplot
introduction.Thebook'spremiseseemedpromising,withtwoboysembarkingonanadventureacrossAmericaviaTheLincolnHighwaytofindtheirmother.Unfortunately,thissetupwasabandonedinfavorofadifferentjourneythatfeltmorelikeaprologue.Instead,thestoryfollowedthree18-year-oldboystraveling1500milesinthewrong
directionovertendays.Forme,thisdiversionwasdisappointing.Iwantedtoexplorethemysterysurroundingtheirmotherandlearnaboutherpostcardsalongtheroute.Thebook'sactualfocusonconstantlychangedplansduetoDuchess'meddlingleftmefeelingfrustrated.Myreadingexperiencewasalsoinfluencedbymytendencytoforgetthat
themaincharacters,Emmett,Woolly,andDuchess,werejustteenagers.ThestorybeganwithEmmettreturninghomeafterservingtimeinajuveniledetentioncenterinSalina,Kansas,andtheothershadstowedawayinthewarden'scar.Ikeptthinkingthetroublemakerswereadultswhohadjustbeenreleasedfromprison.Thesituationstheygot
themselvesintovarieddependingonwhethertheywereteenagersoradults.SometimesI'dgetannoyedwiththeirbehavior,butthenI'dremindmyselfthataskids,theirbrainsweren'tfullydeveloped,andit'showtheywouldnaturallyact.I'mnotsureiftherewasanythingthatcouldhavebeendonedifferentlytokeepmeengaged;maybeitjusthad
somethingtodowithmybrain.WhatIwishIcould'veseenmoreclearlywerethecharacters.Thebookisnarratedfrommultipleperspectives-SallyandDuchessinfirstperson,whileothersaredescribedinthirdperson.I'mfinewiththisapproach,butIfeltthatEmmett'scharacterdeservedfirst-personnarrationsincehewassuchacentralfigurein
thestory.Heseemedhonorablebutdistant,makingithardformetoconnectwithhimonanemotionallevel.Inthebook,Emmettisportrayedasthe'hero'whoalwaysmakestherightchoicesandholdseverythingtogether.However,thismadeitdifficultformetocareabouthimwhenothercharactersweremorerelatable.Duchesswasdescribedas
a"fast-talking,liberty-taking,plan-upendingparadox."He'sfullofenergyandenthusiasmbutsometimesletshisintentionsgetintheway,causingproblemsforothers.Duchessisalsoself-centeredbutultimatelyloyaltoEmmettandBilly.Hisbackstoryandmotivationssparkedmysympathy,butatthesametime,hisactionsoftenputhimandothers
indanger.IstruggledwithfeelinglenienttowardsDuchessduetohisyouthfulbehavior.Hecouldhavethoughtthingsthroughbeforeacting,especiallyconsideringhisage.Thisinnerconflictmademereevaluatemyfeelingsabouthim.Haveyoueverponderedhowmanysecondchanceslifeexpectsfromus?Wooly,Duchess'ssidekick,hailsfroma

referencingthebiblicalMary/Marthastorywhereherservicegoesunnoticed.Sallylongsforahomeofherownandmorecontroloverherlife.Billy's'compendium'isanothersignificantaspect-acollectionofstoriesaboutheroes,adventurers,andtravelerslikeUlyssesandMonteCristo.Thisbook,'TheLincolnHighway',revolvesaroundthethemes
oftravel,adventure,andwritingone'sstory,emphasizingtheimportanceofdiscovery.Weseeeachcharacterontheirownjourneyastheynavigateanin-betweenstageoflife,searchingforanewhomeandafreshstart.Interestingly,Towles'originaltitlewas'UnfinishedBusiness',whichexplainswhyhischaractersareembarkingonthisjourneyto

tellsBillythatwhathappensnextrestsinyourhandsalone,butthismessagefeelsbiblicallyabsurd.IntheBible,Godwouldnevermakeyoufeelaloneorforsaken.Thetidbitsofhistoryinthisbookarereallycool-IlikedlearningabouttheCivilDefenseTestinNewYorkandhowdesertedTimesSquarewasduringthosetimes.Theauthorputsalotof
effortintoresearchinghisbooks.However,I'mstillunsureifIwanttoreaditbecauseithas588pagesandIwasn'tsurewhatthestorywouldbelike.TheLincolnHighwaynovelwasquitetheenigmaforme-lotsofpraise,butalsosomeharshreviews,soIwantedtoformmyownopinion.Readingitwasanintenseexperience,withemotionsranging
fromintriguetoboredomandevenshock.ThestorytookadrasticturnfromwhatIexpected,makingitbothenlighteningandconfusingattimes.I'mstillunsureabouttheoverallmessage,sohere'smyattempttobreakitdown.Ifyou'vereadthebookandwanttodiscussspoilers,headovertomydiscussionontheending.Inshort,Ifeelthatcalling
thisnovelTheLincolnHighwayismisleading-Ithoughtit'dbearoadtripstoryfollowingtheactualLincolnHighway,butthatwasn'tthecase.Instead,it'sabouttwoboyscomingofagein1954America,tryingtofindtheirplaceinsociety.ThebookfollowsEmmettWatsonashereturnshomefromjuvenileprisonanddecidestotakehisyounger
brotheronajourneytoNewYorkwithsomeunexpectedfriendsjoiningthemalongtheway.Thestoryistoldthroughmultipleperspectives,whichIfoundintriguing.However,Ididn'tparticularlyenjoyreadingDuchess'spartduetohisannoyingbehavior,whichmadehimhardtosympathizewith.Theauthor,AmorTowles,chosetoshiftperspectives
throughoutthebook,andIhaveatheoryaboutwhyhedidthat,butit'stoospoileryfornow-youcanfindoutinmyarticlediscussingtheending.Havingmultipleviewpointswashelpful,astheysometimesconflictedwitheachother,addingdepthtothestory.Irecentlyfinishedreadingthisnovelandwhileitwasbeautifullywritten,Icouldn'thelpbut
feelthatitmissedthemarkinseveralareas.Withover600pages,Ifoundsomepartsdraggedonfortoolongandlostinterest.Theauthor'ssignaturestyleofwarmhearted,bigstorytellingwasevidentthroughout,butthelast60pagestookadrasticturnthatleftmefeelingjarring.Itwasasifthetoneshiftedsuddenly,makingitdifficulttoadjustto
whatwashappening.Uponfurtherreflection,I'venoticedhintsofsomethingmoresinisterlurkingbeneaththesurface,whichmakesmewonderiftheauthorlaidgroundworkforwhatwastocome.However,theabruptchangedidn'tprovideasatisfyingconclusion,leavingmefeelingunsatisfied.Despitethis,IappreciateAmorTowles'writingskills
andbelievehecancrafttrulymasterfulnovels.Overall,myexperiencewiththisnovelwasmixed-whileIenjoyedcertainaspects,Iwasdisappointedbyitsflaws.
