(Matthew 24:34 NKJV) "Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all these things take
place.
The Fig Tree is Symbolic of Israel Throughout Scripture
The Fig Tree is Symbolic of Israel throughout Scripture. In Matthew 21 we see Jesus' triumphal
entry into Jerusalem. This was the first time Jesus allowed public worship of Him as the Messiah.
Jesus then goes to the Temple, and cleans house, "you've made my Father House a den of
thieves"! Now, the next morning as Jesus was returning to the city, He sees a Fig Tree that had
leaves, but no fruit, and He curses the tree (Matt 21:18-22). God doesn't take precious space in
His word to curse a fruitless tree, he uses it to make a spiritual application, and we see what that
application is in the context of the rest of the chapter. In the rest of the chapter, Jesus' authority
is questioned by the Jewish leaders, and then Jesus gives the parable referring to Israel's
blindness to Him being the Messiah. The parable is the parable of the Vineyard owner sending
his servants his vineyard (land) and the workers of the land killed them. Then the Landowner
sent his son, and they killed him also (representing God sending Israel first prophets, and then
His Son - but the people of Israel killed them both). The Lord ends that chapter by affirming to
them that He is the Chief Cornerstone that the builders rejected. In this whole context of this
chapter, Jesus is making the point that Israel has missed their Messiah. The point for the Jewish
reader is unmistakable, because a Jew would know from the Old Testament Scriptures that the
Fig Tree represents Israel.
The fig tree was often employed in Scripture as a symbol of Israel (1 Kings 4:25, Hosea 9:10,
Joel 1:7, Nahum 3:12, Micah 4:4, Zechariah 3:10), and the barren fig tree often symbolizes divine
judgment on Israel because of her spiritual fruitlessness despite an abundance of spiritual
advantages (Jeremiah 8:13, Joel 1:12).
The rebirthing happened just like it was prophesied in the Book of Ezekiel;
(Ezekiel 37:1 NKJV) The hand of the LORD came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD, and set me
down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones.
(Ezekiel 37:2 NKJV) Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open
valley; and indeed they were very dry.
(Ezekiel 37:3 NKJV) And He said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" So I answered, "O Lord GOD, You know."
(Ezekiel 37:4 NKJV) Again He said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, 'O dry bones, hear the word of the
LORD!
(Ezekiel 37:5 NKJV) 'Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: "Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall
live.
(Ezekiel 37:6 NKJV) "I will put sinews on you and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you; and
you shall live. Then you shall know that I am the LORD."' "
(Ezekiel 37:7 NKJV) So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a
rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone.
(Ezekiel 37:8 NKJV) Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but
there was no breath in them.
(Ezekiel 37:9 NKJV) Also He said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, 'Thus
says the Lord GOD: "Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live."' "
(Ezekiel 37:10 NKJV) So I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood
upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.
(Ezekiel 37:11 NKJV) Then He said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say,
'Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!'
(Ezekiel 37:12 NKJV) "Therefore prophesy and say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, O My people, I will open
your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel.
(Ezekiel 37:13 NKJV) "Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and
brought you up from your graves.
(Ezekiel 37:14 NKJV) "I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you
shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken it and performed it," says the LORD.'"
(Ezekiel 37:15 NKJV) Again the word of the LORD came to me, saying,
(Ezekiel 37:16 NKJV) "As for you, son of man, take a stick for yourself and write on it: 'For Judah and for the children of
Israel, his companions.' Then take another stick and write on it, 'For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of
Israel, his companions.'
(Ezekiel 37:17 NKJV) "Then join them one to another for yourself into one stick, and they will become one in your hand.
(Ezekiel 37:18 NKJV) "And when the children of your people speak to you, saying, 'Will you not show us what you mean
by these?';
(Ezekiel 37:19 NKJV) "say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD: "Surely I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand
of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel, his companions; and I will join them with it, with the stick of Judah, and make them
one stick, and they will be one in My hand."'
