All Because You Matter
Tami Charles, Bryan Collier
A lyrical, heart-lifting love letter to black and brown children everywhere:
reminding them how much they matter, that they have always mattered, and
they always will, from powerhouse rising star author Tami Charles and
esteemed, award-winning illustrator Bryan Collier.
"A gem for every household." -- Kirkus Reviews, starred review
Discover this poignant, timely, and emotionally stirring picture book, an ode to black
and brown children everywhere that is full of hope, assurance, and love.
Tami Charles pens a poetic, lyrical text that is part love letter, part anthem, assuring
readers that they always have, and always will, matter. This powerful, rhythmic
lullaby reassures readers that their matter and their worth is never diminished, no
matter the circumstance: through the joy and wonder of their first steps and first
laughs, through the hardship of adolescent struggles, and the pain and heartbreak of
current events, they always have, and always will, matter. Accompanied by
illustrations by renowned artist Bryan Collier, a four-time Caldecott Honor recipient
and a nine-time Coretta Scott King Award winner or honoree, All Because You Matter
empowers readers with pride, joy, and comfort, reminding them of their roots and
strengthening them for the days to come.
Lyrical, personal, and full of love, All Because You Matter is for the picture book
audience what The Hate U Give was for YA and Ghost Boys was for middle grade: a
conversation starter, a community touchstone, and a deep affirmation of worth for the
young readers who need it most.
Contributor Bio
Tami Charles is a former teacher and full-time author of picture books, middle grade
and young adult novels, and nonfiction. As a teacher, she made it her mission to
introduce her students to all types of literature, but especially diverse books. While it
was refreshing to see a better selection than what she was accustomed to as a child,
Tami felt there weren’t nearly as many diverse books as she’d hoped for. It was then
that she decided to reignite her passion for writing. Tami is the author of middle
grade novels Like Vanessa and Definitely Daphne; Becoming Beatriz, a YA novel; and
the picture book Freedom Soup.
Bryan Collier loves to paint. He has successfully channeled his creative energy and
love of art into an illustrious career as a children's book illustrator and writer. He
began painting at the age of fifteen and eventually landed a scholarship to attend
Pratt Institute in New York. The Coretta Scott King Awards praised Collier's work in
2001, 2002, 2003, and 2006, and he has won the Caldecott Honor for Dave the
Potter, Martin's Big Words, and Rose. Bryan lives in New York City.

cleaners, construction paper collages, and cookies.

Orientation (Marvel: Avengers Assembly #1)
Preeti Chhibber, James Lancett
A diverse cast of characters -- Kamala Khan (Ms. Marvel), Miles Morales
(Spider-Man), and Doreen Green (Squirrel Girl) -- team up in their first-ever
middle-grade series told through comics, in-world artifacts, and more!
Kamala Khan was an average middle school kid. That is, until a cloud called a
Terrigen Mist swept through the New Jersey waterfront and activated her super
powers! After taking on the persona of Ms. Marvel, she's been fighting crime in Jersey
City, and has caught the eye of some pretty well-established super heroes. But that's
not always a good thing...
After Kamala is caught by news cameras taking on a super villain -- and accidentally
destroying a building along the way -- she gets a letter from Captain Marvel herself!
It's great that she's fighting crime and sticking up for people, but maybe a regular
school isn't the best place to learn how to do that. If she wants to continue as Ms.
Marvel, she's going to need to take on some new extracurricular activities -- mainly,
training with other young super heroes alongside the Avengers!
Now Kamala is the new kid at the Avengers Institute. Her classmates are all kids like
her, they have special powers, but most of them have gotten into some trouble or
drawn attention to themselves. The big news at the Avengers Institute this year? An
academic decathlon in which students will group up into teams and compete against
each other in super heroics. Kamala and her friends Miles and Doreen will have to go
up against a team led by some kids who fight less than fair -- and have some trouble
with the concept of "fighting for good" -- in this funny, action-packed look at some
ordinary middle school kids who just happen to have some extraordinary powers.

The Sinister Substitute (Marvel Avengers Assembly
Book 2)
Preeti Chhibber, James Lancett
A group of new teachers arrives at Avengers Assembly, and not everyone
is who they seem!
Kamala, Doreen, and Miles are back at Avengers Assembly for a new semester! When
Captain Marvel announces she's adding staff to the school, the students aren't sure
who could possibly join -- but it looks like Cap went above and beyond, and the
school is full of new teachers!
With all these new teachers, it's hard to keep track of who's teaching what, and what
they're supposed to be learning. And some of these teachers are really not acting like
heroes at all, but more like... super-villains? All that new staff has created a lot of
confusion that is ripe for exploiting! Someone is impersonating students and teachers,
using lies and deception to break up the new generation of heroes. Can Doreen and
her friends get to the bottom of this scandal? Or will this be the end of the Avengers
Assembly?

The Midnite Our (Half Past Peculiar #2)
Derek Fridolfs, Dustin Nguyen
Lost in a strange dimension where up is down and left is right, the Fetch
twins must find a way to make it back to their own world in this one-of-a-
kind illustrated novel from the New York Times bestselling graphic novel
team of Dustin Nguyen and Derek Fridolfs.
Twins Atticus and Esmeralda Fetch are the best pet finders in Thorns Hollow -- a town
where people have a lot of pets, and those pets often get lost. But when a lost dog
named Maxwell led them to an old, Victorian house on the edge of town, the twins
found their world turned upside down. This creepy house contained a portal that leads
to a whole other world -- a world where mythical creatures like trolls, fairies, and
dragons are real. While trying to track down the lost dog's owners, the twins found
themselves stranded in this world called "the Sideways" with no way to get back.
Now Maxwell, Atticus, Esmeralda, and a strange girl they've encountered in the
Sideways will have to try to find a way to return to their world. Just who is this girl,
and how does she relate to the Fetch twins? And who is the mysterious "hunter" who
is chasing them down at every end? The answers are stranger than anyone could
have imagined.
Using a mix of prose, artifacts, and comics, the Eisner Award-nominated and New
York Times bestselling team of Derek Fridolfs and Dustin Nguyen creates a
fantasy-based middle-grade series that's simultaneously eerie, very funny, and
wondrously imaginative. With a mix of typeset pages, painted artifacts, and beautiful
comics, this one-of-a-kind novel is sure to spark the imaginations of readers
everywhere.

Crocodile Rescue! (Wild Survival #1)
Melissa Cristina Márquez
For fans of The Trail, Out of My Shell, and The Honest Truth, Wild Survival is
the story of a girl finding her voice . . . and fighting for survival.
Twelve-year-old Adrianna Villalobos and her older brother Feye travel the globe with
their parents, the hosts of a suspenseful nature show called "Wild Survival!" The show
features daring animal rescues and the work the family does at their animal
sanctuary. They've recently gotten an offer to take the show from YouTube to a TV
network, and Adrianna is thrilled. So far, she's always been behind the scenes, but
now she gets to join the rest of her family onscreen. She can't wait to bring her
passion for animals to a wide audience.
Their first stop is the lush mangrove forests of Cuba, where they're going to help
rescue an injured crocodile. But things get off to a rocky start when Feye is injured in
an accident partially caused by Adrianna. The status of the show is in jeopardy, and
Adrianna's parents want her back behind the scenes, or maybe even back at home.
Adrianna is determined to prove herself, and save the show-whatever it takes. Even if
that means confronting the legendary Mega Croc of Cuba that's rumored to inhabit
the murky waters around their base camp.
Based on the author's real-life wildlife encounters, this middle-grade series will
include real animal facts, light illustration of the creatures mentioned in each book,
and an Author's Note from Melissa.

Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, Emily Jenkins
Meet the Upside-Down Magic kids in the first topsy-turvy adventure of this
New York Times bestselling series, now a Disney Channel Original Movie!
It's never easy when your magic goes wonky. For Nory, this means that instead of
being able to turn into a dragon or a kitten, she turns into both of them at the same
time-a dritten.
For Elliott, the simple act of conjuring fire from his fingertips turns into a fully frozen
failure.
For Andres, wonky magic means he's always floating in the air, bouncing off the walls,
or sitting on the ceiling.
For Bax, a bad moment of magic will turn him into a . . . actually, he'd rather not talk
about that.
Nory, Elliott, Andres, and Bax are just four of the students in Dunwiddle Magic
School's Upside-Down Magic class. In their classroom, lessons are unconventional,
students are unpredictable, and magic has a tendency to turn wonky at the worst
possible moments. Because it's always amazing, the trouble a little wonky magic can
cause . . .

One Small Hop
Madelyn Rosenberg
Perfect for fans of Carl Hiaasen's classic Hoot, this humorous adventure story
set in a not-so-distant future celebrates the important differences we can
make with small, brave acts.
When Ahab and his friends find a bullfrog in their town -- a real, live bullfrog, possibly
the last bullfrog in North America -- they have several options:
Report it to the Environmental Police Force. Too bad everyone knows the agency is a
joke.
Leave it be. They're just a bunch of kids -- what if they hurt it by moving it?
Find another real, live bullfrog on the black market. Convince their parents to let
them bike to Canada. Introduce the two frogs. Save all of frogkind.
Ahab convinces the rest of the group that C is their only real option. Because if they
don't save this frog, who will? Their quest, which will involve fake ice cream, real frog
spawn, and some very close calls, teaches Ahab that hope is always the logical choice
and that science is always better with friends.
With humor and empathy, acclaimed author Madelyn Rosenberg builds an all-too-
imaginable future ravaged by climate change, where one kid can still lean on his
friends and dream up a better tomorrow.

Sparrow Rising (Skyborn #1)
Jessica Khoury
Jessica Khoury brings her masterful world-building and emotional depth to a
brand-new fantasy series. In a world where everyone is born with wings,
stone monsters prowl the skies, hunting those who dare to fly too high.
In the Clandoms, everyone is born with wings, with tight-knit communities formed
around bird types: Jay, Falcon, Crow.
Ellie Meadows dreams of growing up to join the Goldwings -- the famed knights who
defend all the people of the Clandoms. It was a Goldwing, after all, who saved her life
on that terrible day her parents were killed. There's just one problem: Ellie is a
Sparrow, and the Goldwings are almost invariably picked from the higher clans like
Eagles and Ospreys. This rigid hierarchy means that Ellie is destined to become a
farmer.
Determined to honor her parents' memories and prove herself worthy of the
Goldwings, Ellie sets out on her own for the capital. But her journey will be
dangerous. Foul creatures called gargols lurk behind every cloud, ready to slay
anyone unlucky enough to be caught outside in a storm -- just as Ellie's family was.
Soon her path intertwines with a colorful band of fellow outcasts, each with their own
aspirations... and their own secrets. Ellie's new friends offer not just roadside
companionship. They'll challenge her ideas of right, wrong, and what truly makes a
hero.

Nicotero (The Walking Dead), this fright-filled volume contains two all-new,
chilling tales!
When Bea moves to a new town, she is determined to do two things: get on the
dance team at school and find new friends. What she doesn't expect is for one of
those friends to be a ghost, or for that ghost to be jealous of her dance crew. If Bea
wants to keep the peace, she has to do what her new friends want. But at what cost?
Casey has always loved animals. Dogs and cats are fine enough-not that his
dead-beat dad has ever let him have one. But what he really wants is an African Grey
Parrot. When he finally gets his wish, it's almost too good to be true. The parrot,
Dorian, sings and talks and learns new tricks so fast. Dorian is incredibly
smart-maybe too smart for his, and Casey's, own good...
This collection includes two terrifying novels inspired by Creepshow, AMC's anthology
TV series based on the 1982 horror comedy classic. Perfect for fans of the show as
well as fans of the horror genre in general, it's the most fun you'll ever have being
scared!

Where We Go From Here
Lucas Rocha, Larissa Helena
An absorbing debut novel about three gay friends in Brazil whose lives
become intertwined in the face of HIV, perfect for fans of Adam Silvera and
Bill Konigsberg.
Ian has just been diagnosed with HIV.
Victor, to his great relief, has tested negative.
Henrique has been living with HIV for the past three years.
When Victor finds himself getting tested for HIV for the first time, he can't help but
question his entire relationship with Henrique, the guy he has -- had -- been dating.
See, Henrique didn't disclose his positive HIV status to Victor until after they had sex,
and even though Henrique insisted on using every possible precaution, Victor is livid.
That's when Victor meets Ian, a guy who's also getting tested for HIV. But Ian's test
comes back positive, and his world is about to change forever. Though Victor is loath
to think about Henrique, he offers to put the two of them in touch, hoping that
perhaps Henrique can help Ian navigate his new life. In the process, the lives of Ian,
Victor, and Henrique will become intertwined in a story of friendship, love, and
self-acceptance.
Set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, this utterly engrossing debut by Brazilian author Lucas
Rocha calls back to Alex Sanchez's Rainbow Boys series, bringing attention to how far
we've come with HIV, while shining a harsh light on just how far we have yet to go.

Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Fight Club in this action-packed fantasy
about a secret, underground magic fighting tournament.
If the magic doesn't kill her, the truth just might.
Aza Wu knows that real magic is dangerous and illegal. After all, casting killed her
sister, Shire. As with all magic, everything comes at a price. For Aza, it feels like
everything in her life has some kind of cost attached to it. Her sister had been casting
for money to pay off Saint Willow, the gang leader that oversees her sector of
Lotusland. If you want to operate a business there, you have to pay your tribute. And
now with Shire dead, Aza must step in to save the legacy of Wu Teas, the teahouse
that has been in her family for centuries.
When Aza comes across a secret invitation, she decides she doesn't have much else
to lose. She quickly realizes that she's entered herself into an underground casting
tournament, and the stakes couldn't be higher. Real magic, real consequences. As she
competes, Aza fights for her life against some very strong and devious competitors.
When the facts about Shire's death don't add up, the police start to investigate. When
the tributes to Saint Willow aren't paid, the gang comes to collect. When Aza is
caught sneaking around with fresh casting wounds, her parents are alarmed. As Aza's
dangerous web of lies continues to grow, she is caught between trying to find a way

Spell Starter (A Caster Novel)
Elsie Chapman
The Sting meets Fight Club in this magical, action-packed sequel to Caster by
Elsie Chapman.
Every spell cast needs a starter.
Aza Wu now has magic back. But like all things in her life, it has come at a great cost.
After winning the Tournament of Casters, Aza is able to pay off her parents' debt to
Saint Willow. But the price of the gathered spell she used to strip Finch of his magic
has put her permanently in the employ of the gang leader. And the magic that has
been returned to her is not her own.
Aza is forced to use this magic, stolen and unpredictable, to do Saint Willow's dirty
work. But the gang leader is ambitious and power-obsessed, and she always seems to
have a larger plan. Aza knows that if Saint Willow can benefit, it doesn't matter who
gets hurt along the way.
Forced into a dangerous new situation, Aza will have to reckon with the choices she's
made and the unstable magic she wields. If she can find a way out of Saint Willow's
hold, she just might survive. That is, if her casting doesn't finally consume her.

Sisters of the War: Two Remarkable True Stories of
Survival and Hope in Syria
Rania Abouzeid
An extraordinary true account of the enormous tragedy of the Syrian civil
conflict.
Since the revolution-turned-civil war in Syria began in 2011, over 500,000 civilians
have been killed and more than 12 million Syrians have been displaced. Rania
Abouzeid, one of the foremost journalists on the topic, follows two pairs of sisters
from opposite sides of the conflict to give readers a firsthand glimpse of the turmoil
and devastation this strife has wrought. Sunni Muslim Ruha and her younger sister
Alaa withstand constant attacks by the Syrian government in rebel-held territory.
Alawite sisters Hanin and Jawa try to carry on as normal in the police state of
regime-held Syria. The girls grow up in a world where nightly bombings are routine
and shrapnel counts as toys. They bear witness to arrests, killings, demolished
homes, and further atrocities most adults could not even imagine. Still, war does not
dampen their sense of hope.
Through the stories of Ruha and Alaa and Hanin and Jawa, Abouzeid presents a
clear-eyed and page-turning account of the complex conditions in Syria leading to the
onset of the harrowing conflict. With Abouzeid's careful attention and remarkable
reporting, she crafts an incredibly empathetic and nuanced narrative of the Syrian
civil war, and the promise of progress these young people still embody.
Contributor Bio
Rania Abouzeid has written for TIME, The New Yorker, National Geographic, Politico,
The Guardian, the Los Angeles Times, and a host of other publications. As a
journalist with many years of experience in the Middle East, Rania Abouzeid is
exceedingly familiar with the history of the region, how it impacts current events and
how social and cultural conditions shape today's news. She is a print and television
journalist, fluent in Arabic, who has been honored with numerous awards, including
the 2015 Michael Kelly Award, the 2014 George Polk Award for Foreign Reporting,
and the 2013 Kurt Schork Award in International Journalism.
Rania's first book is No Turning Back: Life, Loss, and Hope in Wartime Syria. She lives
in Beirut and can be found online at raniaabouzeid.com.
