Results From The Auto Laundry News
he 2025 Auto Laundry News In-Bay Automatic Survey
was conducted by randomly mailing/e-mailing
questionnaires to subscribers who own and/or
operate in-bay automatic car wash equipment. The
information in this survey results from an analysis of data
provided by respondents throughout the United States.
Participating locations with self-serve wand bays
accounted for 64 percent of the total response. Last year, 80
percent of participants reported operating self-serve bays.
STATE OF THE SEGMENT
While most of this report is based on hard numbers, we
asked operators a couple of open-ended questions on the
current and future state of the segment. When asked to
provide one word that best describes the current in-bay
automatic environment, responses were overwhelmingly
positive, albeit less so than last year.
Last year, 90 percent of those surveyed provided a positive
take on the state of the segment, while 71 percent did so this
year. This year, steady, good, and okay were the most
popular positive responses, while struggling, challenging,
and crowded topped the list of most common negative
comments.
When asked for a single word to describe their thoughts on
the future of the in-bay market, survey takers had a rosier
outlook, with 77 percent providing positive responses —
growing, hopeful, and good. On the negative side, survey
takers pointed to a scary, awful, and decreasing future.
WASH VOLUME
Thirty-eight percent of those surveyed report an increase in
wash volume over the previous year. This represents a bump
over the 27 percent who reported the same last year. Thirty-
one percent of operators reported a decrease in volume,
down from last year's seven-year high of 40 percent. The
graphic on page 32 provides a full seven-year perspective.
REVENUE
Average gross revenue per car was up significantly year
over year. Last year’s survey showed an average ticket price
of $11.78, which has increased to $12.67 this year.
FUTURE
Around a quarter (28 percent) of in-bay operators plan to
make an equipment purchase over the next 12 months.
Of those with designs on a capital investment, 50 percent
plan to purchase an in-bay unit, 25 percent are looking at a
vacuum system, and 25 percent are in the market for
computers/digital technology.
