Acknowledgments
I would first and foremost like to thank Professor Isabelle Alfandary for providing
me with continued guidance, sharp and insightful feedback, and seemingly infinite
kindness and patience throughout this dissertation, even in the face of many postponed
deadlines and anxious emails. I could not have completed this project without her constant
support and availability, spectacular efficiency, and rigorous eye.
I am also deeply indebted to the members of my jury for expressing interest in this
work and accepting to participate in my viva. I would therefore like to sincerely thank
Professors Sylvie Bauer, Jean-Michel Ganteau, Ronan Ludot-Vlasak, and Marta Segarra
for offering to share their perspectives on my research.
I would also like to thank the many wonderful and generous researchers I have had
the chance work with over the last five years. Many heartfelt thanks to Aliette, Claire,
Charlotte and Liliane from 19-21, as well as to my beloved partners in causeries and
macarons, Caroline and Marion.
I have had the immense opportunity of joining the permanent teaching staff of the
Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne in September 2022, and would therefore like to
thank all my brilliant and inspiring colleagues from the DDL: Alexandrine, Anna, Bilge,
Chiara, Claire, Emmanuel, Grégory, Ianina, Isabel, Jeanne, Lucile, Marion, Matteo,
Myriam, Nathalie, Nolwenn, Soraya, Valérie and Violaine.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to the now illustrious Yellow Room Gang,
who made this doctorate a much less disheartening and solitary endeavour: Beatrice,
Célestine, Clémence, Daniel, Élise-Anne, Eve, Juliette, Lauriane, Marie-Pierre, Mathilde,
Mélaine and Nolwenn, thank you for the many bières-frites, games of skribbl,
not-so-secret birthday chats, and for always keeping some warm coffee in the pot for me.
I am also grateful for the many friendly faces of the MDR, who made this place
feel like a home away from home: Alice, Alexandra, Annelise, Barbara, Bastien, Betty,
Cassandre, Didier, Inés, Jeanne, Johan, Juliette, Katell, Loulou, Manon, Marion, Virginie
and of course Rachid, the glue holding us all together. Particular thanks to Florence, for
always making my Wednesdays brighter, answering emails quicker than anyone I know,
and for being altogether incredibly kind and generous.
To Elisabeth, John and Laura—as well as my fantastic team of readers and
reviewers—thank you for shouldering the final weeks of writing alongside me, and for
making them feel like less of an ordeal.
To Elizabeth, Georgia, James, Katharine, and Samantha, thank you for keeping
fairy-tales and folklore ever so magical and enchanting.
Some particularly precious individuals have showed me unwavering support and
understanding throughout this arduous endeavour, and I am beyond grateful for their
friendship: Guillaume, my forever partner in birthday shenanigans; Morgane, who
impressively stuck with me through seventeen years of thick and thin; and Audrey, my
rock throughout the last few months, and the biggest proponent of my endless stream of
unsolicited dog pictures.
