Rationale:
Since the fall of the Babari Masjid, at the end of the 20th century, the world around us
started falling apart. On one side, there was an onset of globalisation, which was projected as
an integrating process, but on the other side, one could observe the disintegrating world
materialised through extreme terrorism, communal violence, gender atrocities, etc. Recent
attacks on the lives of forward thinkers and social workers like Mr. Narendra Dabholkar and
Mr. Govind Pansare brought a colossal loss of rationality and humanity. At present, people all
over the world are engaged in fighting violent battles with each other. Race, religion, caste,
class, creed, gender, etc. all are turning out to be the limiting factors for the man's overall
progress. The picture is not rosy at personal levels too. We get agitated and depressed too
quickly. We have become easy targets of nervous breakdowns, anxiety, depressions, and
indecisiveness. The rate at which individuals commit suicide is also increasing. Such a state of
mind does not allow us to think sensibly. In such a situation, it becomes very difficult to
evaluate oneself as well as the disintegrating world around. How to live a sane life in the world
full of insanity is a very significant problem of the present generation.
Thus, the world of Korzybski, in the first half of the 2 Oth century (when he developed the
system of General Semantics at the backdrop of the World War I), has not changed much even
in the second decade of the 21st century. One cannot see very impressive signs that the
humanity has entered in its 'manhood' as Korzybski felt; instead, in the words of Homer f.
Moore, one can say that "we have entered the 'Teen-hood of Humanity' at best". And then, the
need of Korzybski's thoughts was never been greater. At this backdrop, it becomes necessary
to learn how to think sensibly in this ever-changing complex world and how to face the
pressures and challenges of the present times.
Objectives:
At this backdrop, the Nodal Centre for General Semantics in the Smt. C. H. M. College
along with a solid support from its parent body, Balvant Parekh Centre for General Semantics
and Other Human Sciences, Baroda, is proposing a Certificate Course titled "sensible Thinking
for the Complex World: A General Semantics Approach". The present course aims at enabling
young students to think and act sensibly, 'preparing them for life'. While understanding the
fundamentals of the General Semantics system, students will learn how to apply General
Semantics for Sensible Thinking. The syllabus is especially framed to address the young
students of urban India. So it attempts to take-up the most pertinent issues and challenges
faced by them in the present times.

NODAL CENTRE FOR GENERAL SEMANTICS (2018-20t9)
A Certificate Course on
'Approaching Nationalism in Constitutional Framework:
A Course in Applied General Semantics'
Concent:
rnstead of transforming the world as global village, the neoliberal globalization of 21't Century turned the
nationalities into the villages wrapped in their ethnic identities. The upsurge of nationalistic sentiments is both
the cause and the consequence of deeply rooted insecurities that were suppressed under the constitutional
promises of justice and independence in Post-War world. In India, in past few years we witnessed the rise of
radical nationalism on ethnic and communal ground that throws open the challenge before the rationally
inclined minds to interpret and carry the society to the logical end of modernity that is to construct the sensible
world. The proposed course is designed to explore and understand the phenomena with tools of General
Semantics. It aims to propose academic intervention and nurturing of human resource to engage the complex
world of our imagination in terms of nationalism and constitution in India.
Objective:
1. To train the participant to engage in the debate over nationalism and constitution in rational and meaningful
way.
2. To develop the source material for those who are interested in exploring General Semantics way to deal
with the issue of nationalism in India.
3. To contribute towards strengthening of the Constitutional values for the betterment of Indian society.
Relevance of the Course:
There is a renewed and intensive debate over the sffands of nationalism in India. The highly charged political
mood of the surrounding brought the youth of the country at the crossroads of life where rational attitude is
highly needed than the early years of political independence. The relevance of the course can be straight away
located in the debate over nationalism and constitutional values. It is necessary to inculcate the rational

approach embodied in the Constitution of India to overcome the individual crisis. The proposed course offers
the perspective to look at the trajectory of nationalism in India from the General Semantics Approach and locate
the discourse in the constitutional framework.
