China: Motorcycle industry
Industry status Production and sales rank second in the world after India
China's motorcycle industry had been in a stagnating trend in recent years due to rising demand
for four-wheelers automobiles accompanying rising national income. China was the world leader
in both production and sales volume but fell from the top spot after India overtook it in sales in 2012,
and production in 2015. However, in the past few years, signs of recovery became apparent in the
motorcycle market, which had been temporarily stagnant due to the spread of automobiles, exhaust
emission regulations and noise, and other factors.
Production and sales volume Recovery to a high level in 2021
Motorcycle sales in 2021 were at a high level of 17.85 million units. This was a 13.8 increase
from the previous year. Following the Covid pandemic, motorcycle use picked up a tailwind given
they can maintain social distance. Also, medium- and large-displacement motorcycles that meet
leisure and recreational needs have emerged, driving the overall recovery of the motorcycle industry.
Unit sales of 150 cc and 250 cc motorcycles swelled to 3.65 million units, up 19.7 from the prior
year, and to 1.37 million units, up 18.7, respectively.
The resurgence in popularity reflects a change in the way Chinese people use motorcycles. In the
1980s, motorcycles were used as a means of transport, but in recent years have become a play
tool” for young people seeking excitement in their lifestyle. From 2020 onwards, young people born
in the “born in 1990s and born in the 2000s have been enjoying motor life as a unique vehicle
and “part of leisure.
Sales volume by product, saw fuel motorcycles increase by 15.2 from the prior year to 16.25
million units and electric scooters increase by 3.4 to 3.94 million units. The production also
increased by 14.0 to 17.85 million units.
* Since the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers CAAM no longer publishes figures
for motorcycles alone from 2020, data is from the China Chamber of Commerce for Motorcycles
CCCMP.
Export volume Expanding trend
Exports of overall finished vehicles increased by 26.6 from the previous year piled to 8.98
million units in 2021. The total value of exports by producing companies grew by 45.7 to 7.23
billion US dollars.
