How It Came to Be
Stage 1 -Initial creation (ending around 1985)
Increasing backcountry & wilderness use, growing awareness
of recreational impacts over several decades, booming
backcountry/wilderness use in the 60’s and 70’s.
Stage 2 -Formation, coordination, institutionalize
(1985-1994) Establishing curriculum, outreach and training
programs, interagency collaboration, agency coordinators
established.
Stage 3: Expansion (1994 to present)
Creation of LNT, Inc./LNT Center for Outdoor Ethics, MOU
with wilderness agencies, refinement of principles, expansion
of programs and resources, addition of many more players.
