167 The Book of Leviticus
This becomes a very important Sabbath day to the people, during which they will humble their souls.
Leviticus 16:29–31 And [this set of rituals] is for you (all) a statute of perpetuity in the month, the seventh, on the
tenth [day] regarding the month, [when] you (all) will humble your souls. Also, you will not do any work, [not you,
not] the native-born and [not] the immigrant dwelling among you (all). For in this day, [the priest] will atone for you
to cleanse you (all) from any of your sins. Before Yehowah, you will be made clean. This [is] for you (all) a
Sabbath of rest and you (all) will humble your souls. [This is] a statute of perpetuity. (Kukis mostly literal
translation)
Leviticus 16:29–31 This set of rituals, previously described, will be for you all a statute of long duration, to take
place during the seventh month on the tenth day of that month. This is a day when you will humble your souls.
You will not do any work on this day, nor will the native-born resident or the immigrant who ilives among you. On
this day, the priest will atone for you to cleanse you fall all of your sins. Before Jehovah, you will be made clean.
This is a Sabbath day of rest for you, during which you will humble your souls. This ritual will continue for a long
time. (Kukis paraphrase)
——————————
Although much of this chapter was fairly easy to translate, this final set of three verses was quite a bit more difficult
to unravel and fully understand. I am only moderately pleased with the mostly literal translation and the
paraphrase.
And has covered over the priest, whom he
will anoint him, and so [the one] whom he
will make full his hand to act as a priest
instead of his father. And he has put on
garments of white linen, garments of the
Holy (Place), and to cover over a sanctuary
of the holiness and a Tent of Meeting and the
altar he will cover over. And upon the
priests and upon all people of the
congregation he has covered over. And was
this to you (all) a statute of perpetuity to
cover over upon sons of Israel from all their
sins once in the year. And so he will do as
that which mandated Yehowah Moses.
Leviticus
16:32–34
And the priest who will anoint him will make
an atonement and who will fill up his hand, to
act as priest instead of his father. And he will
put on the garments of white linen, the
garments of the Holy (Place); and he has made
an atonement for the sanctuary of holiness
and the Tent of Meeting, and he will make
atonement for the altar. And he will make
atonement for the priests and all people of the
congregation. And [all of] this has been for
you (all) a perpetual statute, to make an
atonement over the sons of Israel [to separate
them] from all their sins once in the year. And
Moses will do [all] that Yehowah has mandated
[him to do].
The next in line to acts as priest, one of Aaron’s sons, will make the atonement and take on the
responsibility of acting as priest instead of his father. He, instead of Aaron, will put on the white linen
clothing, the clothing of the Holy place. He will perform the ceremonies to make an atonement for the holy
sanctuary and the Tent of Meeting. He will also make an atonement for the altar. Furthermore, he will
make an atonement for the priests and all the people of the congregation. All of this will become a
perpetual statute, where atonement is made for the sons of Israel, to ritually separate them from their sins
each year. Therefore, Moses will do all the Jehovah has required him to do.
Here is how others have translated this passage:
Ancient texts:
Masoretic Text (Hebrew) And has covered over the priest, whom he will anoint him, and so [the one] whom
he will make full his hand to act as a priest instead of his father. And he has put on
garments of white linen, garments of the Holy (Place), and to cover over a
sanctuary of the holiness and a Tent of Meeting and the altar he will cover over.
