This comprehensive thesis embarks on a profound exploration of the intricate theme of
transformation that weaves through the tapestry of modern English literature. Within the pages of
literary works spanning from the late 19th century to the present day, we venture deep into the
multifaceted dimensions of characters' metamorphoses and discover their profound resonances
across diverse narratives.The journey through this study transcends the boundaries of literature
itself, delving into an array of rich theoretical frameworks that provide lenses through which these
metamorphic narratives can be examined and understood. Literary Structuralism displays the
hidden codes and structures that underlie the transformation of characters and their worlds.
Psychoanalytic Theory takes us on a voyage into the depths of the human psyche, where
transformations are often born from the innermost struggles and desires. Feminist and Gender
Theory offers a lens through which we deconstruct the intricate dynamics of identity and change,
shedding light on how gender shapes and is shaped by metamorphosis. Postcolonial Theory guides
us through the complex terrain of cultural hybridity and identity shifts, illuminating the
transformative impacts of colonial histories. Existentialism and Phenomenology challenge us to
question the very nature of transformation and its philosophical implications, while Narrative
Theory and Intertextuality unveil the art of weaving transformative narratives within narratives.
This study is not content with mere observation; it delves into the heart of these narratives through
close readings and meticulous analyses. It is in these pages that the narratives reveal their secrets,

Introduction
Metamorphosis, a concept deeply rooted in human imagination and cultural expressions,
has transcended the boundaries of time and culture to captivate the human psyche for centuries. Its
enchanting allure can be traced through the annals of human history (Chen, 2013), from the ancient
myths and legends of shape-shifting gods and mystical creatures to the contemporary narratives
that grapple with the complexities of personal growth, societal evolution, and existential
introspection (Fan, 2015). As a narrative motif, metamorphosis has proven itself as a versatile
vessel for conveying profound truths, symbolic meanings, and universal truths that resonate across
cultures and generations.
Throughout the ages, storytellers and artists have woven tales of transformation,
recognizing its potent potential to capture the essence of human experiences and dilemmas (Fan,
2015). Ancient mythologies, such as Ovid's "Metamorphoses" and the stories of Zeus assuming
various forms to connect with mortals, highlighted the fluidity of identity and the interplay between
the divine and the human. In these narratives, metamorphosis served as a means to bridge the gap
between the ordinary and the extraordinary (Hu, 2001), inviting readers to ponder the malleable
nature of reality and the intricate dance between mortal and immortal realms.
As the pages of history turned, the theme of transformation continued to evolve, finding

As modern English literature emerged in the wake of rapid industrialization, urbanization,
and sociopolitical transformations, it embraced the theme of metamorphosis as a means to grapple
with the complexities of modernity (McFadden, 2008). This thesis seeks to unravel the myriad
ways in which transformation narratives mirror the socio-cultural shifts of their times while also

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a comprehensive analysis of the portrayal
of transformation themes in modern English literature. By examining a diverse selection of literary
works, ranging from novels to poems to short stories, this research aims to offer nuanced insights
into the ways in which authors engage with and reinterpret the concept of metamorphosis.
Scope and Limitations
The scope of this study encompasses a diverse array of literary works within the realm of
modern English literature (Chen, 2013), spanning from the late 19th century to the present day. It
seeks to encompass a wide range of genres, including novels, short stories, poems, and potentially
other forms of creative expression, in order to capture the richness and variety of how the theme
of metamorphosis has been explored (Menton & Faris, 2005).
In the selection of literary works for analysis, preference will be given to those that are
widely recognized and celebrated for their thematic depth and artistic significance. This may
include works from various literary movements (Alhawamdeh, Talafha, & Jarrah, 2019), such as
Romanticism, Modernism, Postmodernism, and beyond, reflecting the evolution of literary styles
and sensibilities over time (Huang, 2015).
However, it is important to acknowledge certain limitations that guide the boundaries of
this study. Firstly, the exploration of transformation themes is confined to the English language
and its literary expressions (Andrews & Short, 1999). While the theme of metamorphosis is
undoubtedly a universal and cross-cultural motif, this study will primarily focus on works written

in English, as English literature has its own distinctive trajectory of development, influenced by
its cultural, historical, and linguistic contexts.
Secondly, while the aim is to provide a comprehensive analysis, the sheer volume of literary
works that fall within the scope of this study necessitates a degree of selectivity (McFadden, 2008).
Therefore, the analysis will encompass a representative sample of works that exemplify different
approaches to depicting and exploring transformation. This selection process is guided by the need
to strike a balance between depth and breadth (Hu, 2001), allowing for in-depth analysis while
also acknowledging the vast spectrum of literary expressions.
Lastly, it's important to acknowledge that any study of literature is inherently subjective
