RHS Theater
Company travels
to Dallas Fan
Festival
By James Hill
The Dallas Fan Festival
is a convention for all things
comics and pop culture. It took
place in the Irving Convention
Center in Dallas on October
20-22, and some of the Rains
High School theater students
attended last Friday. The event
had some pop-culture
celebrities present, such as Paul
Bettany, Andy Serkis, John
Rhys-Davies, and the cast of the
television show MASH.
“Theater students got to
dress up as their favorite
character and had the
opportunity to walk the cosplay
red carpet and have pictures
taken by local media sources,”
said Jonathan Lance, RHS
Theater Teacher. “RHS actually
made it into the event
commercial.”
This is the third year the
RHS students have ventured to
the event in Irving Texas. Last
year, students had the chance to
talk with the cast of Cobra Kai
cast and ask them questions
about the audition process.
This year Denis Lawson,
the original Wedge Antillies
from the 1977 film Star Wars,
was present at the event and
available to talk with students
about his film career. In real
life, Lawson is the uncle of
Ewan McGregor, who played
Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel
series.
The goal of the event is
to build and celebrate
communities centered around
comics, movies, TV series, and
other such forms of media.
Cosplay, or dressing up as your
favorite hero, is encouraged and
many attendees put a lot of time
and effort into their costumes
in preparation for the event.
“For artists, comic book
authors from DC and Marvel
were at the event to not only
talk about their careers but to
demo their artistic styles,”
remarked Lance. “This annual
trip is a celebration of content
creatures and artists in pop
culture.”
October 23, 2023
The event featured
several exhibitors, including
retailers of pop culture
merchandise. There will also be
what the website calls “Artist
Alley”, which has many art
exhibits. These exhibits
included many different art
styles and mediums (Paint,
pencil, F-150 tire streak, etc.)
and served to show off the
creativity these communities
inspire. The RHS students who
attended the event went on
Friday and returned later that
same day.
Homecoming
Dance Is A Hit!
By Andrew Young
and Reeve Bevans
Rains High School had
their Homecoming dance on
October 14 in the High school
cafeteria. There was more than
70 students precent at the
dance.
“There were a lot of
people and really good food,
overall it was a blast and I can't
wait for the next one. I
personally think everyone
setting up did a really good
job,” stated Andrew Young.
“I had a blast at the
dance, I genuinely needed a day
that I could just mess around
and not care about anything. A
few of my friends were there,
and me and V were not
expecting to see them there. I
think my most memorable
moment was that V was about
5-6 inches taller than me in
their heels, I felt teeny tiny,”
Reeve Bevans states.
Let's hope that the next
dance is just as spectacular!
Until next time wildcats.
Red Ribbon
Week
By Jesus Guzman
Rains High School is
celebrating Red ribbon week on
the week of October 23-27 to
fight the usage of drugs and to
highlight the importance of
living drug free. Red Ribbon
week also presents an
opportunity for educators,
parents, and communities to
fortify the drug-free message.
Red Ribbon Week was
founded by the National Family
Partnership. It was formerly the
National Federation of Parents
for Drug Free Youth, was
established as a nonprofit
organization in 1980 by parents
who were convinced they
should begin to play a
leadership role in drug
prevention. Since 1985, the
organization has started Red
Ribbon Week and has affected
millions of lives, according to
the Red Ribbon website.
At RHS, the school has
chosen to support this cause by
having dress up days to bring
awareness. On Monday of that
week it's Rally up against drugs;
wear red. On Tuesday, its team
up against drugs; wear athletic
gear such as football jerseys. On
Wednesday, the theme will be
dreams can come true without
drugs; Pajama Day. Finally on
Thursday, the theme will be
anything but a backpack day as
well as your futures bright in
which each grade level would
have a different color to wear;
Freshman wear yellow,
Sophomores wear Green,
Juniors wear Pink, and finally
Seniors wear white lines.
Thursday will also end with a
pep rally.
“Just help us and like
dress up on the days and be
spirited and don't do drugs,”
stated Gracie Shreves, a student
at RHS.

exactly what the plans are for
the future. So far this year we've

because we have grant toward

been setting all the stuff up like

Band Updates
By Madeline Howdeshell
The band competition
had happened during October
14 at Winnsboro High school
for battle of the sphere with
around sixteen other bands
participating there. Rains High
school band performed 1:30
p.m. and made 12th place.
As well as gave them
good practice with the cold
temperatures and winds
considering the regional

few days from then. It is stated
by Halle Dunn that they have
worked well to have improved
their marching and their music
had sounded really nice during
the competition at Winnsboro
High school.
Dunn stated “We didn’t
quite make it in finals but we
were right there so hopefully
with these tweaks and little fix
ups we’ve been making these
last couple days we will do
really good at the regional
contest.”
Dunn had also stated
that it was a lot of fun and that
their favorite part had been
playing the music for part four
especially because of the low
brass part at the very
beginning.
The RHS band attended
their UIL competition on
October 18, 2023.
The competition is
judged by three judges who
judge based on both marching
and the music piece itself. The
band scored 1;1;2 in their
competition, scoring up to a 1
overall. This means that the
band will be advancing to Area
competition. That meet will
take place on October 28, 2023.
The music pieces are
themed around space, which
earned the show the name
Planets Across the Stars. The
three pieces are Mars and
Jupiter from Gustav Holst’s The
Planets, as well as Across the
Universe by the Beatles.
“We have a trio that
includes Brodie Aguilar who
plays trombone, Jasmine
Rivera who plays flute, and
Gavin Pierce who plays
saxophone,” said . The trio

plays a ‘solo’ in the second part
of the band's performance.

second part in the third part.

Line Without a
Hook - Song
Review
October 23, 2023
By Piper Besherse
In today’s addition of
Dial Tones, we’re going over a
heartfelt song off of the
Montgomery Ricky album,
called Line Without A Hook.
Released in 2016, this song's
genre is also alt/indie and
follows a common theme with
the other songs we have been
covering this month. There are
many meanings to this song as
said by the artist himself, so
let’s go over a few.
The song is
characterized by its emotional
lyrics and catchy melody, the
song can be about the feeling of
heartbreak and the difficulties
of moving on from a past
relationship, feeling lost at sea.
The lyrics can convey a sense of
longing, regret, with the
narrator expressing desire to
reel somebody back in, feeling
like a “Line Without a Hook”
suggesting a feeling of being
incomplete without the other
person. The song captures the
universal experience of new
things, like moving to a new
place or meeting new people. It
could also be about the struggle
of letting someone go that you
care deeply about.
The song's simple, but effective
instrumentals and Ricky
Montgomery’s emotional vocal
deliveries contribute greatly to
its appeal. It’s a relatable,
bittersweet song that resonates
with many listeners who have
experienced similar
complexities.
A nice fact about this
song is Ricky Montgomery has
done a version featuring
Mxmtoon, which some of you
would know from her songs
prom dress or feelings are fatal.
A lot of fans really enjoy this
version of the song. This
version of the song brings an
entirely new perspective, as it
allows listeners to insert
themselves through the point of
views a lot more than before.
Mxmtoon basically sings an
entire verse of the song rather
than Ricky, and it gives the
alternating perspective of the
two lovers portrayed in the
song, which makes the song all
the more intimate and
emotional, and overall allow for
plenty of new theories and
portrayals of the song. Not only
that, but the feature of
Mxmtoon allows not only an
entire new audience to enjoy
and be exposed to Ricky
Montgomery’s music, but gives
the fans of his music already
some exposure to other music
and to hear another voice added
in, changing the style and
perception of the song.
Unhinged - Movie
Review
By Sydney Burnett
This 2020 psychological
thriller film “Unhinged” takes
place when Rachel, a single
mother whose day gets a lot
worse when she honks her horn
at a fellow driver during
rush-hour traffic. After an
exchange of a couple of words,
she soon comes to realize that
the mysterious man, who’s
seemingly mentally ill, is
following her and her young
son in his truck. Soon, Rachel
finds herself, and everyone else
she loves, the target of a man
who feels invisible and is
looking to make one last mark
upon the world, by teaching her
a series of deadly lessons. This
initial case of road-rage quickly
escalates into a full-blown game
of cat and mouse that proves
you never know who you’re
driving next to.
This movie is Rated-R
and was released August 21st,
2020, with the director of this
movie, Derrick Borte, the
producers Lisa Ellzey, Andrew
Gunn, and Mark Gill, along
with Academy Award winner
Russell Crowe. Its rating is 6/10
with over seven thousand
reviews.
The Amazing
Digital Circus
Review
October 23, 2023
By Sammi Houchins
On Friday, October 13th,
the pilot episode of the
animated series The Amazing
Digital Circus was posted to the
GLITCH Youtube channel and
took the internet by storm. The
video quickly gained traction
with audiences cross-platform,
and has earned praise in
particular for its stunning
musical score, especially its
outro music.
The Amazing Digital
Circus is the brainchild of
animator and musical
composer Cooper Smith
Goodwin, better known by their
online handle “Gooseworx,”
known for their work in bizarre,
psychological horror projects
like Little Runmo and The
Darly Boxman Show. Through
the work of a team of talented
animators, its visuals are
consistent with Goodwin’s
signature bouncy and
expressive style, employing
colorful backgrounds and
bouncy, vivacious movement to
contrast the story’s decidedly
dark (and frankly terrifying)
subject matter.
The pilot’s plot follows
the story of Pomni, a skittish
girl in the brightly colored attire
of a court jester, who finds
herself trapped in a nonsensical
digital hellscape after putting
on a headset that she cannot
remove. Interestingly enough,
the name Pomni is a Slovenian
word meaning “remember,” a
nod to the fact that Pomni has
forgotten her real name. The
pilot includes no shortage of
biblical references, subtle and
otherwise, including the name
of the host, Caine, as a nod to
the story of Cain and Abel, and
the staging of the closing scene
closely resembling the Last
Supper.
The show features vocal
talents such as Lizzie Freeman,
who worked on projects such as
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure and
Genshin Impact, and Michal
Kovach, best known for his role
in Vivienne Medrano’s Hazbin
Hotel.

we’re going to try to make them

October 23, 2023
On September 27th,

announced via their instagram.
On October 3rd, 2023, the first

Captain America
and the Winter
Soldier - Movie
Review
By Caroline Howdeshell
Captain America and the
Winter Soldier came out on
April 4, 2014. In the movie,
they look back and find that one
of Captain America’s oldest
friends, James “Bucky” Barnes,
was kidnapped and turned into
an assassin by HYDRA, one of
the biggest villain agencies in
the entire MCU.
Bucky, who is a former
WW2 soldier, had his brain
hijacked and taken over by
HYDRA, turning him into the
Winter Soldier. Throughout the
movie, we learn more and more
about Bucky and what
October 23, 2023
happened after he fell out of the
train in the first Captain
America movie. Bucky, who has
already had his mind taken over
by HYDRA, can’t remember
anything or anyone. Including
himself or his old friend,
Captain America.
He spends a majority of
the movie being hunted by not
only Captain America himself,
but also Falcon and Black
Widow, who have teamed up
with him in hopes of getting
Bucky back into the right mind.
Captain America ends
up refusing to fight Bucky,
instead telling him to just go
ahead and kill him already, in
hopes of getting through and
into his thick head.
Warhammer
40,000: Darkside
By Preston Cross
Warhammer 40,000:
Darktide has recently come to
Xbox Game Pass, after being
out on PC since November
30th, 2022. On October 4th of
this year, Darktide came out on
console as well as Xbox Game
Pass. Developed and published
by Fatshark.
This game takes place in
as you can guess, the
Warhammer Universe. You play
as a fugitive who helps out the
guards in a raid on the prison
transport ship, where you prove
yourself loyal to the Emperor.
Since you proved yourself
capable as a fighter you are
then put into the Empire's
military. You will be put on a
squad of Inquisitorial Agents
investigating a potential Chaos
Insurrection in the Hive City of
Tertium on the industrial
planet of Atoma Prime.
Warhammer Darktide
uses a game Engine called
Autodesk Stingray, which was
an attempt to compete with the
Unreal Engine. Darktide offers
stunning visuals and very
detailed environmental
artwork, but the game came
burdened with a variety of
performance issues from
Network Stability problems to
Frame Rate drops that hindered
the experience.
The gameplay however
is a blend between a First
Person Shooter, as well as a
Hack and Slash. Your main
weapon is any type of melee
weapon and your choice of a
firearm. This choice varies since
you can choose between four
classes at the beginning of the
game, such as the Veteran, the
Zealot, the Psyker, or the
Ogryn. All of which have their
own unique weapons and
customization. The biggest
issue however in the gameplay
is that it gets rather repetitive,
as the game uses the same few
maps for every mission. The
mission objectives are typically
the same so the game gets
rather dull. Darktide has great
potential in the future, if they
add more maps, or more
objectives to these maps, the
game would feel a lot more
refreshing. Overall the game is
in a solid state that could do
with some improvement in the
future.

Fun Facts about
Monsters
Vampires:
Dracula Inspiration: The most
famous vampire, Count
Dracula, was inspired by the
real-life figure Vlad the Impaler,
a 15th-century Romanian
prince known for his cruel and
gruesome methods of
punishment.
Immortality Myths: While
vampires are often portrayed as
immortal, the idea of immortality
through drinking blood is a
relatively recent addition to
vampire lore. In many older

simply undead and would
eventually decay.

a werewolf is a common theme

limited to just wolves. In
different cultures, people
believed in the ability to
transform into various animals,
not only wolves.

Some mental disorders, such
as clinical lycanthropy, involve
individuals believing they can
transform into animals,
including werewolves. It is a
rare psychological condition.
Zombies:
Haitian Origins: The
concept of zombies is often
associated with Haitian Vodou
folklore. In these traditions,
zombies are not the
flesh-eating creatures seen in
modern films but are more akin
to reanimated corpses under
the control of a sorcerer.
George A. Romero: The
modern popularization of the
flesh-eating zombie is largely
credited to filmmaker George A.
Romero, who directed "Night of
the Living Dead" in 1968. This
film introduced the idea of
zombies as reanimated corpses
with a craving for human flesh.
Zombie Apocalypse:
The idea of a "zombie
apocalypse" has become a
common theme in popular
culture. It typically involves the
world being overrun by hordes
of the undead. This concept
has inspired numerous movies,
TV shows, and books.
Zombie Walks: Zombie
walks are events where people
dress up as zombies and walk
through cities or participate in
parades. These events are a
form of cosplay and are often
organized for charity or
entertainment purposes.
These fun facts provide
a glimpse into the rich and
varied folklore and pop culture
surrounding vampires,
werewolves, and zombies.
Each of these creatures has a
unique history and has evolved
in different ways over the years.
