In today’s addition of
Dial Tones, we’re going over a
heartfelt song off of the
Montgomery Ricky album,
called Line Without A Hook.
Released in 2016, this song's
genre is also alt/indie and
follows a common theme with
the other songs we have been
covering this month. There are
many meanings to this song as
said by the artist himself, so
let’s go over a few.
The song is
characterized by its emotional
lyrics and catchy melody, the
song can be about the feeling of
heartbreak and the difficulties
of moving on from a past
relationship, feeling lost at sea.
The lyrics can convey a sense of
longing, regret, with the
narrator expressing desire to
reel somebody back in, feeling
like a “Line Without a Hook”
suggesting a feeling of being
incomplete without the other
person. The song captures the
universal experience of new
things, like moving to a new
place or meeting new people. It
could also be about the struggle
of letting someone go that you
care deeply about.
The song's simple, but effective
instrumentals and Ricky
Montgomery’s emotional vocal
deliveries contribute greatly to
its appeal. It’s a relatable,
bittersweet song that resonates
with many listeners who have
experienced similar
complexities.
A nice fact about this
song is Ricky Montgomery has
done a version featuring
Mxmtoon, which some of you
would know from her songs
prom dress or feelings are fatal.
A lot of fans really enjoy this
version of the song. This
version of the song brings an
entirely new perspective, as it
allows listeners to insert
themselves through the point of
views a lot more than before.
Mxmtoon basically sings an
entire verse of the song rather
than Ricky, and it gives the
alternating perspective of the
two lovers portrayed in the
song, which makes the song all
the more intimate and
emotional, and overall allow for
plenty of new theories and
portrayals of the song. Not only
that, but the feature of
Mxmtoon allows not only an
entire new audience to enjoy
and be exposed to Ricky
Montgomery’s music, but gives
the fans of his music already
some exposure to other music
and to hear another voice added
in, changing the style and
perception of the song.
