GOT QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE?
The Alpha Course could change your life! It's
an opportunity to explore the meaning of life
through the lens of the Christian faith, in a
relaxed environment. Alpha is for anyone who
is curious to find out more about faith, those
who are exploring and questioning; cynics,
sceptics and the open-minded. This Alpha
Course will be run in the Catholic tradition.
We'll begin on 21st August 2025 at 7pm at St.
Bede's Parish Centre, Clayton-le-Woods and
meet every Thursday for 10 weeks. Please pass on this information to
family members and friends who you think might be interested in
coming along. For further information or to register your interest

CHORLEY HOSPITAL
Please contact St. Josephs Presbytery if any member of your
family is admitted into Chorley Hospital and would appreciate a visit.
In an emergency the hospital switchboard will contact the on-call
Catholic Priest. Please request this from any member of Staff on the
Ward.
MASS INTENTIONS
We currently have space for Mass Intentions to be offered for special
anniversaries etc. These can be requested by either speaking to Fr
Ball or placing the details in a envelope with a cash offering in
support of the clergy (nominal £10) and posted through the Church
House. The offering is not a payment for Mass but goes towards
supporting priests. Thank you.
Please remember to donate to our Parish. You can also donate safely on line via our Website Link.
Please post your Mass intentions through the Presbytery Letter Box. They will be remembered in Fr. Balls Masses.

FIRST READING (Jeremiah 38:4-6.8-10)
The preaching of the prophet Jeremiah incurs the wrath of the
Kings supporters and he is thrown into a well which becomes his
prison cell. An unlikely supporter recognises that he is Gods
prophet and rescues him.
SECOND READING (Hebrews 12:1-4)
Jesus was steadfast against those opposed him even to enduring the
cross. Paul in his letter to the Hebrews exhorts the people to take
courage from Jesusexample when they face conflict and suffering.
GOSPEL (Luke 12:49-53)
Jesus was driven by the same passion for God and his people as
Jeremiah. He tells his disciples of his desire to cast the fire of the
word on the earth. His message is an uncomfortable one that will
cause division for those who try to follow it.
REFLECTION
A swamp may look nice on the surface, but its depths are full of
rotten things. Peace that is based on injustice is like that. It is a
false peace and Jesus came to disrupt it. But then there is true
peace; a peace in which all of Gods children have their basic rights
respected and are able to live in freedom and dignity. This is the
peace Jesus came to bring. But peace like this doesnt happen; it
has to be made. Sometimes the peacemakers will be branded
troublemakers. But Jesus had another name for them: he called
them children of God.
SUNDAY THEME
The path to heaven is like a race and we must keep our eyes on
Jesus our leader. The saints too are praying for us so that we will
win. With so many cheering us on to the finish how can we lose?
We must never give up even when the going is hardest. We are
bound to suffer for our faith just as Jeremiah the prophet did but
the Lord will deliver us.
The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feastday was established by Pope
Pius XII in 1954 to conclude what was
then the octave of the Assumption. On
this feastday we remember that Mary
reigns is heaven together with her Son.
She reigns not because she is equal to
God but because she is the mother of
Christ the King. All her privileges come
from her motherhood of God and the
unique role she played in human re-
demption. Her queenship is a share in
Jesus kingship. Here on earth her life,
like that of her son, was one of humble service.
PILGRIMS OF HOPE IN THE HOLY LAND
As the suffering in Gaza continues, many Palestinian Christian
communities in East Jerusalem and the West Bank are struggling
silently. These are the oldest Christian communities in the world,
yet their future has never been more uncertain.
Michael OBrien, a parishioner at Bishop Eton, Liverpool, recently
travelled to the Holy Land to witness the reality firsthand. Deeply
moved by what he saw, he is now inviting others to join him in re-
sponding to a heartfelt plea from the local Church:
Return to the Holy Land as Pilgrims of Hope and show solidarity
with the Christian community. Come back! Were waiting for you,
and we need you!
Cardinal Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem
The Liverpool Pilgrims of Hopeinitiative offers a way for local
Christians to make a difference — not through politics or protest,
but through pilgrimage: an act of faith, love, and visible solidarity.
