important piece of the circularity puzzle.
These upcycled materials can come from natural, renewable, or
synthetic sources. Either way, we use a calculation based on carbon
atoms – in line with our renewable carbon calculation method – to
determine the percentage of upcycling ingredients.

In this year’s collection, Firsantol® is an upcycled ingredient derived
from sustainable processes that enhance its value while reducing
extracted from the paper industry, where softwood is often used
to manufacture cardboard. Derived originally from softwoods, this
turpentine is valorized through a fractionation process in which we
retrieve alpha and beta pinene, the two main molecules obtained from
fractionated turpentine.

The Boswellia Carterii trees grow abundantly on the northern slopes of
the Golis mountains in the Sanaag region. Tapping and collection takes
place once a year. Each tapping cycle involves marking the tree, leaving
the gum to exude and dry, then collecting it from the tree after one week
and remarking the trunk for the next collection.
The gum is stored in natural caves in the rock faces, accumulating in
these caves until the farmers collect all the gum for the season.
The Olibanum is then packed in PP bags of about 40kgs each and
transported by Camel or Donkey to the nearest village.
