"The book talked about important and
good subjects such as love,
forgiveness, equality, and justice.
However, I think the book was a little
too descriptive when describing the
main character's married life."
"Riley Sager always puts his own
crazy twist on a story! Once the first
shocker came, I was hooked! I don't
know how he managed to tie it all
together, but he did!"
"Very cute also very spicy! Loved
how the characters were
understanding of each others
traumas."
"This book was incredible! I was
sort of skeptical at first, but once I
started reading I couldn't stop!
Amazing!!"

Monarch Family Success Center located at 1038 E. Chestnut Avenue; Suite
235 Vineland opened its doors in July 2008. Funded by NJ Department of
Children and Families and supported by Inspira Health. Our mission is to
focus on prevention by strengthening families and neighborhoods, enriching
the lives of children, reducing isolation and promoting community
connections. We do this by providing integrated, locally based services to
all Vineland residents which includes but not limited to employed,
unemployed, transitioning and undocumented families/individuals. Some
services are provided by the FSC, and many are the collaborative effort of
community agencies. We serve individuals seeking leadership opportunities,
community involvement, development of parenting and financial skills. We
serve families seeking family fun activities within their community. There is
no fee associated with our services and no guidelines to qualify.
The Family Success Center Team consists of a Site Director, two Family
Partners, and one Resource and Community Volunteer Specialist. Families
and staff can work together in the goal setting process to resolve or diminish
a variety of challenges that are identified by the families.
During the 2021-2022 contract year the Monarch Family Success Center
was able to serve over 400 unduplicated families, over 1,300 individuals
were linked and referred to services, more than 1000 individuals were
provided with an assortment of life skills classes covering cooking, making
legal decisions, managing stress and family bonding activities. Some of the
best events are those centered around families, friends and their children
enjoying craft creations, movie time or community dinners. It gives
community members a chance to relax and enjoy cherished time together
and get to know their neighbors.
The center has a comforting, homelike atmosphere where everyone is
welcome and greeted with a friendly smile. Hours of operation are Monday-
Thursday 8am-4:00pm with events happening on a variety of evenings.

Tilly
Tilly recently raised a litter of kittens in a
foster home and is now back at the shelter,
ready to be pampered and doted on. Tilly has
been bouncing all over, between giving birth in
a foster home, then back at the shelter, then
out to a rescue, and now Tilly is back with us
at SJRAS. She's friendly and curious and
would love a home to call her very own. Come
meet her today!
Good news! Our three pets from last month’s edition have all left the

Dog Walkers
Do you love dogs and enjoy being outdoors? Then we have the perfect
opportunity for you! The South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter is looking
for dog walkers to help give our furry friends the exercise and socialization
they deserve.
As a dog walker, you'll not only be giving our dogs a chance to stretch
their legs, but you'll also be helping them become more comfortable around
people, making them better candidates for adoption. And let's not forget the
benefits for you! Taking a break from your day-to-day routine and spending
time with a happy pup can be a great way to reduce stress and get some
fresh air. So, if you're ready to make a difference in the lives of some
adorable dogs and have a fun time doing it, sign up to be a dog walker at
the South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter today!
Kitten Season is Just Around the Corner Get ready to purr on over
to SJRAS because it's kitten season! While the arrival of spring brings
sunshine and flowers, it also marks the start of a furry frenzy as feline
babies are born left and right. But with all the cuteness comes a
serious challenge for animal shelters.
The South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter is no exception and
needs your help to care for all the new arrivals. Luckily, you don't have
to be a cat person to lend a paw.
You can volunteer at the shelter and help get these kittens ready for
their forever homes. If you're feeling extra generous, you can even
become a foster parent and open your home to these little rascals.
Imagine the joy of watching them grow and develop, and the
satisfaction of knowing that you're making a difference in their lives. So,
don't leave these kittens hangin’! Join us in giving them the care they
need and deserve by volunteering or fostering for South Jersey
Regional Animal Shelter.
You can do so at tinyurl.com/sjrasvolunteer, or by visiting our website
sjras.org and filling out our volunteer application.

Slow cooker ham is juicy and delicious with this no-fuss recipe
that's perfect for holiday meals. The only ingredients you need
are brown sugar and a bone-in picnic ham.
Prep Time:--5 mins
Cook Time:--8 hrs
Total Time:--8 hrs 5 mins
Ingredients
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 (8 pound) cured, bone-in picnic ham
Directions
Spread about 1 1/2 cups of brown sugar on the bottom of a
slow cooker.
Place ham on the brown sugar with the flat side facing down;
you might have to trim it a little to make it fit.
Use your hands to rub the remaining brown sugar onto the
ham.
Cover, and cook on Low for 8 hours.
Tips
If you are using a spiral-cut ham, you'll want to cut the cooking
time by about half as a spiral-cut will dry out faster.
You can add a 6-ounce can pineapple juice or crushed pineapple
and a few pinches of ground cloves in Step 2, if desired.

The History of Our Silliest Holiday
Taco Bell announced it would purchase and rename the Liberty Bell . Burger
King pledged to roll out a left-handed burger. But perhaps no one takes April
Fool’s jokes more seriously than the BBC, which has pranked listeners for
decades with reports of record spaghetti crops and planetary alignments that
lessened Earth’s gravity, allowing people to levitate. Where did this impish
impulse come from?
There are many theories about how our modern April Fool’s Day came into
existence1. It roughly coincides with the Vernal Equinox and may have developed
during the switch from the Julian calendar (beginning April 1st) to our Gregorian
calendar – those who stuck to the old New Year were seen as foolish. In addition,
the ancient Romans had a robust sense of humor and celebrated a holiday called
Hilaria. The festival involved dressing up as neighbors or prominent citizens to
mock them.
The modern custom of pranking our friends seems to date back at least to the
18th century when England and Scotland celebrated the tradition over two days. It
began with “Hunting the Gowk” – sending people on phony errands. The next day,
dubbed “Tailie Day,” was dedicated to pranks on others’ derrieres – “kick me”
signs or pin-the-tail type games. While some of these customs might not be quite
appropriate in the modern workplace, we can still strive to lighten the mood
through verbal “gotcha”s, like punning.
.
Are you sure you want to borrow all those books? You don’t want to overdue it.
We both have to visit the library today. Dewey go together?
In The Pun Also Rises [808.7 POL], John Pollack takes a not-too-serious look at
how puns have influenced language and why such wordplay matters. In ancient
times, cultures the world over used puns to enlighten and challenge readers
(such as the prominent wordplay in the Hebrew Bible) or to test their wit against
rivals (sometimes with deadly consequences, such as in traditional Hawaiian
challenges). Even Egyptian hieroglyphs employed punning through the
increasingly clever use of picture combinations to express loftier ideas.
Pollack notes that our modern English language is rife with homophones that
lend themselves to endless punning. Such wordplay encourages creativity and
better neural connections in both children and adults. So, this April Fool’s Day, we
encourage you to treat your-shelf with a hilarious, pun-filled read. Here are a few
suggestions for the youngest of readers to the oldest:

Spotlight on World Book Encyclopedia:
Need a reliable source for your research paper? Tired of chasing
Wikipedia footnote links to out-of-date or non-operational webpages? There’s
another option: WorldBookOnline.com!
Gone are the days of heavy, multivolume encyclopedias lining entire
library shelves…and falling out of date each passing year. World Book Online
provides up-to-date, reliable resources for all your research needs. Find
atlases and interactive maps or links to New Jersey and US government
websites. Read newspapers from all over the world. Peruse articles on
famous people or discover facts about animals and the natural world. You
can also discover art, architecture, inventions, and more.
Vineland Public Library cardholders can access this encyclopedia for
free. Go to VinelandLibrary.org. Scroll down to Research and click the green
banner, then “Click Here.” The link will bring you to WorldBookOnline.com.
You’ll need to type in your library card number. Once you’ve entered the
site, you can choose the level of research appropriate for you: Discover (for
grades 5+), Advanced (for grades 9+), or Timelines (for grades 5+).
Then check out the Research and Resources tab at the top left of the page.
You’ll find an extensive menu to get you started.
Click on something – for example, Pathfinders. Then choose a subject
matter, like Architecture. You’ll find a list of dozens of articles based on
famous architects, kinds of buildings, parts of buildings, style of architecture.
After choosing an article, you can also find “Related Information” by clicking
the tab at the top left of the page. World Book will take you to a list of
suggested articles related to your topic.
Pro tip: if you’d like to save articles, you can create a “project” – a folder
where you can save all your research for easy access. To do this, you’ll need to
create a free account with a username and password. There are also icons for
emailing and printing articles.
This is a fantastic resource for children and teens, whether they’re working
on research papers or just curious to learn more about a topic. It’s also great
for lifelong learners. Check out some of the fun features like “Today in History”
or the weekly news quiz.

The South Jersey Holocaust Coalition invites everyone to hear author,
Seth Stern, on his book on growing up in the Vineland area where
thousands of survivors of the Holocaust chose South Jersey to begin a new
life in farming. Starting small, with relentless perseverance, they welcomed
an opportunity for a new life, a quiet life, after the turmoil of their previous
years. Many had very little knowledge or the skills for what they were about
to embark. But they became successful - not only in supporting their
families and friends, but also in enriching the culture and community
throughout South Jersey.
There are many success stories. Their children and grandchildren,
many still living in the area, reminisce about growing up on the chicken
farms, and although special to many, there were also attitudes which they
were forced to confront, and at times tolerate. Eventually, many men and
women who started out as chicken farmers became community leaders in
retail, law, and medicine, with the next generations following their leads.
Stern uses interviews with refugee farmers and their children. The oral
histories and archival records bear witness to the trauma, grief, and the
desire to insulate their children from past realities. Speaking Yiddish to
Chickens dives into those memories, shines a light on a community of
survivors - survivors many times over.
An All-Virtual book presentation by Seth Stern will be presented on:
Thursday, April 20, 2023
from 4:30 to 6:00pm.
The event is free, and sponsored by The South Jersey Holocaust Coalition
and The Jewish Federation of Cumberland, Salem, and Gloucester Counties.
Registration by April 19th, 2023 is required at
