2025 Schedule (11-5 overall, 0-0 Big 12)
The First Pitch: Things to Know
• The inaugural Big 12 Conference schedule begins this weekend for the
Utah baseball team and it sends the Utes to Kansas State for a three-game
series. Utah will travel out to Manhaan, Kansas, for the series which runs
from March 14-16 inside Tointon Family Stadium.
• Utah is 11-5 on the season and looks to get back on track aer back-to-
back losses in the rubber game at San Jose State (March 9) and a midweek
contest at California (March 11). It is the rst me this season the Utes
have dropped consecuve games.
• Now members of the Big 12 Conference, the league is Utah’s h
aliaon since resuming varsity baseball in 1948. Previously, the Utes
have played in the Skyline Conference (1948-62), WAC (1963-98),
Mountain West (1999-2011) and Pac-12 Conference (2012-24). Since
joining the WAC, Utah has won ve conference championships, most
recently in 2016 as a member of the Pac-12.
• Utah and Kansas State have met six mes on the baseball diamond in
recorded history; K-State leads the series 5-1 dang back to 2001. An
odd twist: all of the six games have been neutral-site contests as part of
non-conference tournaments. They include the Applebee’s Baseball Fiesta
(2001 in Albuquerque, N.M.), Pac-12/Big 12 Challenge (2015 and ’16 in
Surprise, Ariz.), Tony Gwynn Legacy (2019 in San Diego) and the Kleberg
Bank College Classic (2020 in Corpus Chris, Texas).
• Of the three Division I baseball teams in The Sunower State, K-State is
the last for Utah to visit. Previously, the Utes traveled to Wichita State in
1997 and Kansas in 2015.
• Despite a series setback last weekend at San Jose State, shortstop Core
Jackson and second baseman Ma Flaharty both hit over .330 for the
weekend. Jackson homered in the series opener among his four hits,
scoring three runs.
• Friday night starter McAnelly struck out eight Spartans in the series
opener, before fellow right-hander Merit Jones tossed eight innings on
Saturday and fanned six—on the way to a series-evening victory.
• The Utah bats enter Big 12 play in the upper half of the league—as a club,
Utah is hing .300 which ranks sixth. It has been keyed by 45 doubles; a
conference-best. Georgia Tech (51) leads the country in doubles entering
this weekend.
• Headlining the oense has been Jackson, the two-hole hier who is
riding an 11-game hing streak. The nave of Wyoming, Ontario, boasts
a team-best .431 bang average (h in the Big 12) while also owning
Utah’s top slugging percentage (.646), most runs scored (17) and total
bases (42).

Assistant coach Todd Guilliams, who primarily works with
the Utah hiers, has helped the ballclub build momentum
as one of the top oenses in the West. Utah put on a 2024
season that once again saw improvement with Power
Conference era program records set. That momentum has
carried into the early part of 2025.
• Entering conference play, Utah is slashing .300 / .383
/ .419 as a team with 55 extra-base hits and 113 runs
scored. The 55 extra-base hits include a Big 12-best 45
doubles which is also top-six in the country.
• Oensively, Utah is also in the upper half of the Big 12
in hits (5th; 176), triples (5th, 5) and bang average (6th;
.300).
• The 2024 Utes set Power Conference era program
records in bang average (.289), runs scored (385), hits
(555), total bases (841), slugging percentage (.437) and
OBP (.385). For the second straight season, Utah had the
fewest strikeouts (382) of any oense in the Pac-12.
• Utah averaged seven runs per game last year, third-most
in the Pac-12 and the third straight season that the team’s
scoring increased from the prior year.
• Utah led the Pac-12 with 88 stolen bases last season, a
tally that ranked ninth in the Power Conferences. It is the
third-most for a season in program history and the most by
the Utes since the 1997 team swiped 105 bags.
• Under Guilliams’ mentorship, TJ Clarkson became the
rst Ute in the Power Conference era to hit double-digit
home runs in three straight seasons (2022-24).
C-Mac Magic
Right-handed pitcher Colter McAnelly won a pair of Big 12
Conference weekly awards to begin his sophomore season.
He was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week each of
the rst two weeks, sharing the honor once.
• Named the Opening Day starter at Pepperdine, the
Wyoming nave delivered a six-inning start on Feb. 14.
Though he received a no-decision, he allowed one run and
kept Utah right in the game as the team eventually won in
10 innings. He was unfazed by a leado home run in the
rst inning, rering 16 of the next 18 baers he faced.
• Then on Feb. 21 at San Diego State, he went a career-
long seven innings with 10 strikeouts. His rst seven outs
were recorded via ‘K’, and the leado baer never reached
against McAnelly. It took unl the seventh inning before
he walked anyone or allowed a runner to reach third base.
Lucas Boesen came on in the eighth inning for McAnelly
and nished the combined shutout.
• McAnelly brings a 2.13 ERA into the weekend, ranking
top-six in the Big 12.
Baseball, at its Core
Shortstop Core Jackson is back for his second season at
Utah aer pung on an All-Conference campaign in ’24.
He was named the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the
Week on March 4, given to the naon’s top shortstop
of the past week. One of the Pac-12’s top defensive
shortstops a year ago, Jackson is looking to carry that
prowess into the Big 12.
• Jackson has enjoyed a hot bat to start 2025, tabbing the
top-four in the Big 12 with a .431 average while his with
28 hits are the second-most in the conference. He slashed
.565 / .630 / .870 the week of Feb. 24 to help Utah to a 4-1
record and earn Brooks Wallace weekly honors. Six of his
13 hits in that stretch were for extra bases, including ve
doubles. He scored 10 runs and drove in 10 more as well,
while going error-free on 26 defensive chances.
• Jackson had three doubles as part of a 4-for-5 line in
a Feb. 28 win at California Bapst. He had ve RBI while
Jackson’s three doubles ed the most in a game this
season by a Big 12 player. He also reached base in ve
of six plate appearances during the March 2 game at UC
Riverside, contribung four of Utah’s 21 hits.
• As a junior last season he started 52 games at shortstop,
slashing .363 / .463 / .516 with 15 doubles, three triples,
four home runs, 41 RBI, 30 walks and 51 runs scored. His
.363 bang average was a team-best while he stole 17
bases, ranking second both on the team and in the Pac-12.
• He also was among the league leaders in bang average
(4th), OBP (3rd) and hits (4th; 78). One of the league’s top
defensive shortstops, he led the Pac-12 in assists (163) and
had a hand in 38 double plays, the h-most across the
conference.
• During league play, he ranked second with a .398
bang average. D1Baseball.com listed Jackson as the No.
11-ranked shortstop in the country on its 2024 late season
rankings.
• In 2023 at South Mountain Community College, Jackson
appeared in 53 games, hing .321 with 16 doubles, three
triples, four homers and 33 RBI.
• He also spent 2022 in the Big Ten at Nebraska, hing
.210 in 44 games with six doubles, two triples, a home run
and 21 RBI.

D1Baseball Names Five Utes as Top Preseason Big 12
Prospects
Every preseason, D1Baseball.com ranks the top prospects
throughout each Division I conference. This year, ve
Utes were recognized on the site’s ranking of top Big 12
prospects.
• For the 2025 MLB Dra, D1Baseball.com included
right-handed pitcher Merit Jones (No. 16), shortstop Core
Jackson (No. 18) and ouielder Kaden Carpenter (No.
44) among the league’s top prospects. Sophomore right-
hander Colter McAnelly was sloed in the top-25 for the
2026 dra, while fellow right-hander and freshman Dillon
Fine was tabbed No. 15 on the list of impact freshmen in
the Big 12.
• Jones is coming o an eight-inning start on March 8 in
which he helped Utah even up its series at San Jose State.
It was a career-long oung for the junior as he racked up
six strikeouts and walked just two Spartans on the day.
• One of four Utes bang .300 or beer, Jackson (.431)
has started the last 14 games at shortstop, contribung 16
RBI and 17 runs scored. He leads the team with six stolen
bases, and leads all returners with 17 swipes during the
2024 season. Jackson’s six doubles are ed for third on the
team, short of only Ma Flaharty and Kaden Carpenter (7
each).
• Carpenter has started all 16 games in right eld, hing
.333 so far and clubbing seven doubles of his own. He
scored a key insurance run in extra innings during the Feb.
14 season opener as Utah came away with a 3-1 victory
over Pepperdine. Then in the win over Seale (Feb. 22),
Carpenters two-run single in the eighth inning ed the
score at three—before Ma Flaharty had a walk-o single
in the ninth.
• McAnelly won Big 12 Pitcher of the Week each of the
rst two series. He most recently tossed a complete game
at San Jose State (March 7) despite a tough-luck loss.
• Coming to the Utes from Caldwell, Idaho, Fine has made
ve appearances (two starts) with 7.2 innings pitched to
date.
This is the Place
Utah added considerable talent heading into the 2025
campaign, both from the transfer portal and the high
school ranks. All told, 22 players are embarking on their
rst season as Utah Utes.
• On the bump, the Utes added experience in LHP Mateus
Conaway (Whitman College) and RHP Brady Joyner
(Willamee). A two-way player, Conaway was a two-me
All-Northwest Conference pick; he was a .277 career hier
while also recording a 6-1 season on the mound in 2023.
Joyner reset the Willamee program record for career
saves (25) and ed the single-season record with 10 in
2023.
• A variety of posion players joined the program through
the transfer portal, including OF and 2022 Mountain West
Freshman of the Year Sanno Panaro (UNLV), two-way
player Demitri Diamant (Georgia Tech) and INF Austen
Roellig (LSU).
• Catchers Cal Kilgore and Derek Smith both have come to
the Utes from the junior college ranks, though each have
one season of Division I baseball under their belts. Kilgore
was part of the NM State team that won the WAC in 2022,
while Smith spent 2023 at Oklahoma State. Ouielder Jake
Long hit .353 last year at Santa Ana College, aer posng
an All-CIF career at La Serna HS.
• Freshman RHP Dillon Fine was ranked as D1Baseball.
com’s No. 15 Big 12 Impact Freshman. He was a decorated
two-way player at Homedale HS in Idaho, helping the
Trojans win three district championships and one state
runner-up nish. The 2024 Idaho 3A Player of the Year
went 12-0 with a blistering 0.37 ERA and 126 strikeouts—
his third straight season with 100-plus punchouts on the
bump.
Stealin’
Perhaps the most noceable change for Utah between
2023 and ’24 was the Utes’ aggressiveness on the
basepaths, racking up an 88-for-117 stolen bases ledger.
The team’s 88 successful swipes were the most since the
1997 season (105), led the Pac-12 and had a signicant pad
from the next-closest club in the conference (Oregon had
61).
• Utah’s Kai Roberts (33) and Core Jackson (17) were the
two leading base-stealers in the Pac-12 last season. Their
combined total of 50 stolen bases exceeded ve teams’
totals in the conference.
• Roberts stole 33 bases during the 2024 season aer
logging 33 steals combined from 2021-23.

History Made
The Utes won 33 games during the 2024 season, the most
in the Power Conference era of the program and tying the
second-most all me. In addion, the 2024 team became
the fastest to reach 30 wins, hing that milestone on May
5 with a win over Oregon in the 45th game of the season.
Previously, the 1997 club had taken 47 games to reach 30
wins.

Three members of the Utah Baseball program were
selected in the 2024 MLB Dra. It included ouielder Kai
Roberts (7th round – SD), southpaw closer Micah Ashman
(11th round – DET) and right-hander Merit Jones (20th
round – MIN). The three picks were the most for Utah in a
single MLB Dra since 2017.
• Jones, picked as a dra-eligible sophomore, elected
to return to Utah for his junior season. He has made 35
career appearances (30 starts). As a sophomore in 2024,
Jones made 13 starts and nished 3-5 with 68.1 innings
of work. He struck out 68 baers along the way. Though
primarily used in the rotaon, his rst collegiate save came
in the Pac-12 Tournament when the Utes knocked o
Oregon during pool play.
• Jones has also performed strongly in the classroom,
as the health and kinesiology major was named CSC
Academic All-District in 2024.
• One of the most improved players in recent program
history, Roberts raised his bang average nearly 100
points (.266 to .356) his senior year and bumped his
slugging percentage from .393 to .562, to go with career-
highs of 83 hits, 21 doubles, seven home runs and 58 RBI.
The ABCA All-Region honoree became the top base-stealer
in Utah history, nishing with 66 career swipes and 33 his
nal season—both program records.
• In his three seasons, Ashman earned two Pac-12 All-
Conference selecons and set the program record with 20
career saves. He had a 4-8 career record and 3.36 ERA, and
closed out 11 games in 2024—the second-most by a Ute
all-me for a single season. It also ranked second in the
Pac-12 and sixth naonally.
“If You Build it, They Will Come”
Construcon is underway for Charlie Monfort Field at
America First Ballpark, slated to become the new on-
campus home of the Utah Baseball program. Pending
construcon schedules, the eld surface is expected to be
available for team pracce only beginning in Spring 2025.
The facility is ancipated to be ready for game compeon
in the 2026 season.
• The new ballpark will be located at the site of the Utes’
current pracce facility on Guardsman Way. Plans call
for a 1,200-seat ballpark with fan amenies including
concessions, restrooms, cket oce and merchandise
sales, as well as facilies for the Utah baseball program,
including locker rooms, coaches’ oces, medical space,
equipment storage and indoor bang/pitching cages.
The total project is expected to cost $35 million, with the
majority of the funding privately raised.
• Currently, the Utes play their home games at Smith’s
Ballpark in Downtown Salt Lake City, which has served as
the team’s primary home venue since the 1996 season.
Baseball in some fashion (collegiate and/or professional)
has been played at the intersecon of 13th South and
West Temple since 1928 with the opening of Community
Park, which was renamed Derks Field in 1940. Derks Field
closed in 1993, with the current Smith’s Ballpark opening
on the site in 1994.

Utah Baseball Rallies in the Ninth for 2-1 Win Over Kansas State
Robeniol Pitches 6.1 Innings Only Giving Up Four Hits
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Utah baseball team clawed their way to a 2-1 victory over Kansas State behind
great pitching in the Kleberg Bank College Classic.
Three Utah pitchers combined to only give up one run in the game and the Utes nally broke through in the
boom of the ninth scoring two runs for the walk-o win.
Heading into the ninth, Ma Richardson reached base with a single to le eld for Utah’s rst hit of the aer-
noon. Aer a Vinny Zavolta walk, Tyler Thompson bunted them over to put runners on second and third with
one out. With runners on base applying a lile pressure, the Kansas State pitcher had trouble nding the strike
zone and had a wild pitch for Richardson to score and e the game. Aer the Wildcats then walked the next
two baers to load the bases with one out, Shea Kramer hit a grounder to third and beat out the aempt at a
double play to get out of the inning giving Utah a walk-o win.
Kyle Robeniol pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed four hits on the aernoon. Josh Gins came in and pitched
2.1 innings only giving up two hits, but allowing one run. Zac McCleve came in to get the last out and keeping
Utah down only one run heading to the boom of the ninth.
The Utes did draw seven walks in the game with three of those coming in the ninth inning.

One of the most respected coaching figures in college baseball, Utah
skipper Gary Henderson was named the ninth head coach in modern
program history on June 9, 2021. Henderson, the NCBWA 2018 National
Coach of the Year, previously served as the Utes’ associate head coach in
2020 and ‘21.
A seasoned veteran in the coaching world, Henderson owns 37 prior years
of experience, highlighted by stops at Florida, Oregon State, Kentucky and
Mississippi State prior to coming to Utah. His 13 seasons as a head coach
rank third-most of all skippers in the Big 12 entering 2025.
Well-known for his ability to produce Major League talent on the mound,
Henderson has worked with 17 pitchers that have reached the big leagues
since 2012. He also spent Summer 2015 as the pitching coach for the USA
Baseball Collegiate National Team; 10 arms from that club have since
reached the big leagues.
The 2024 Utes made strides with one of the program’s top seasons in
history. Utah’s 9-1 start was the best since 1980 as the team went on to
win 33 games—tying the second-most victories all-time. Henderson’s club
entered the national polls with a top-25 ranking from D1Baseball.com, the
first time that the Utes had been ranked in any of the five current major
college baseball polls.
It was a much-improved season in virtually every facet. On the mound, Utah
native Bryson Van Sickle was named ABCA All-Region and Pac-12 Pitcher
of the Year, the latter making Van Sickle the first in program history to win
Pitcher of the Year. He headlined four All-Conference First Team honors,
tying the most in the Utes’ Power Conference era. Fellow southpaw and
All-Conference honoree Micah Ashman broke the Utah career saves record,
serving as a lockdown closer for a pitching sta that lowered its ERA by
more than two runs from 2023.
Oensively, Utah set Power Conference era program records in batting
average, runs scored, hits, total bases, slugging percentage, OBP and
stolen bases. The Utes’ seven runs per game was the highest since 2006
and marked the third straight season that the team’s scoring average
increased from the prior year. Four Utes hit over .300, including Kai
Roberts—who reset both the single-season and career stolen base program
records.
Roberts (San Diego), Ashman (Detroit) and draft-eligible sophomore Merit
Jones (Minnesota) were all selected in the 2024 MLB Draft--the most in
a single season at Utah since 2017. Jones elected to return to Utah for his
junior season.
Following the 2023 season, three Utah arms signed professional contracts
as Cam Day signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, McCleve
with the Tampa Bay Rays and Blake Whiting landed with the Milwaukee
Brewers.
As Utah’s associate head coach in 2020 and ‘21, Henderson worked under
longtime Utes skipper Bill Kinneberg, who retired in May 2021 after 18 years
leading the program.
Henderson arrived at Utah following two seasons at Mississippi State. After
serving as the Bulldogs’ pitching coach in 2017, he became the interim head
coach for the Bulldogs midway through 2018 and led the program to the
College World Series in thrilling fashion.
The success he had as interim coach at Mississippi State came as no
surprise, as he had been one of the most successful coaches in the
University of Kentucky’s baseball history from 2004-08 as an assistant
and 2009-16 as the head coach. The Wildcats won at least 30 games in
five-straight seasons for the first time in school history. He was voted SEC
Coach of the Year by his peers after the school’s record-breaking 2012
season.
Henderson reached 200 wins faster than any head coach in Kentucky
history. In his tenure with the Wildcats, 72 players were picked in the MLB
Draft or signed as free agents.
Prior to Kentucky, Henderson spent five seasons as pitching coach and
recruiting coordinator at Oregon State. Before Oregon State, Henderson
served as pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida from 1995-
98. In that time, he helped the Gators to the SEC Championship and the
College World Series in both 1996 and 1998.
