IMPACT REPORT 2025
We have a pope. Indeed, we do.
The words proclaimed from the central balcony of St. Peters Basilica on May 8 marked the start of a historic and
inspiring new chapter for the U.S. Catholic Church. With the election of Pope Leo XIV, the world welcomed the first
American ponti. A Chicago native and alumnus of Villanova University, the new successor of St. Peter brings to the
papacy both a deep understanding of what it means to live the Catholic faith in America and a global perspective
shaped by his years of missionary service.
When the world turned its eyes to Rome as the church mourned Pope Francis and began the conclave that would
elect Leo XIV, America Media met the moment. Thanks to the support of generous donors, we were able to put a
large team on the ground in Rome and deliver daily updates on the web, in email, and in podcasts and videos. In
addition to the coverage we provided directly for America subscribers and listeners, our team also reached a much
broader audience through commentary in a variety of secular media outlets. Throughout the time in Rome, I heard
from other journalists about how often they turned to Americas content and commentators to help them under-
stand the deeper context of the story unfolding around us.
Through America magazine, our podcasts “Inside the Vatican,” “Jesuitical,” “Preach” and “The Spiritual Life with
Fr. James Martin, S.J.,” daily newsletters, webinars, Scripture reflections, pilgrimages, and the America website
and app, we provide an informed Catholic perspective to deepen your understanding of global events as well as your
faith. No other U.S.-based media organization is better positioned to deliver the high-quality reporting and insight
you need about our church, the Vatican and now, our first American pope.
Americas mission extends far beyond news and analysis. At the heart of all we do is a desire to build community,
helping our readers, listeners and viewers feel more at home in the church through charitable engagement with di-
verse perspectives, united in the pursuit of the common good. We know you rely on us to navigate the ever-evolving
intersection of church and world, a responsibility we take seriously and embrace with hope.
This year’s Impact Report celebrates the many ways America Media continues to live out our mission. As always, we
depend on your support, your generosity and above all, your prayers. We are grateful to journey with you, listening,
discerning and seeking God’s greater glory together.

Here are some additional highlights from the past year.
Some of our most popular feature articles demonstrated
that God can, indeed, be found in all things. We delved
into timely questions around everything from infertility to
immigration. These stories included:
J.D. Long García tackled the spiritual and ethical chal-
lenges faced by Catholics struggling with infertility.
Rachel Lu proposed an antidote to Christian nationalism.
Joe Hoover, S.J., considered whether Catholics should
watch "The Chosen."
Kerry Weber defended Catholic kitsch.
Gerard O'Connell explained the history and meaning
behind the Jubilee Year.
J.J. Carney profiled the longest-serving Native Ameri-
can Catholic deacon in the United States.
Cecilia González-Andrieu shared Pope Francis’
wisdom for our current migrant crisis.
We worked to help our community process the news stories
of the day through the personal experiences of individual
Catholics, and we tried to help make the everyday experienc-
es in our church more meaningful.
Sheral Marshall, O.S.F., and Maureen Sinnott, O.S.F.,
reflected on how Alzheimer’s has aected their life
together.
Myles Sheehan, S.J., oered a Jesuit guide to aging and
retirement.
Brian Strassburger, S.J., and William Critchley-Menor,
S.J., described what they saw during an ICE arrest and
immigration court hearing.
Rosie La Puma Lebel wrote about her struggles as a
Catholic with celiac disease.
Britt Luby remembered the sacred gift of summer camp
on Texas’s Guadalupe River.
Elizabeth Grace Matthew considered the spirituality of
being a #Boymom.

produce a broad range of informative and enriching audio experi-
ences, including:
“The Spiritual Life with Fr. James Martin, S.J.”: Our brand new
podcast series that has shot to overnight success, featuring in-depth
conversations with Catholic sages such as Ron Rolheiser O.M.I. and
Cardinal Timothy Radclie O.P. and high-profile spiritual seekers –
Stephen Colbert, Martin Scorsese, Jim Gagan and Whoopi Gold-
berg. Released across web, podcasting platforms and YouTube, the
show has quickly become Americas most viewed and listened to
podcast.

“Inside the Vatican”: Building on seven years of steady growth,
“Inside the Vatican” achieved record numbers during the papal
transition in April and May 2025. The team partnered with “Jesu-
itical” to produce a conclave podcast publishing episodes every day
for two weeks in both audio and video podcast format. As a result,
weekly podcast engagement has remained at all time highs and the
team is strategizing about how to grow even more.
Web Youtube Spotify Apple Podcasts
Jesuitical”: Our podcast “for saints and sinners” has evolved over
the years but continues to serve a dedicated audience for honest
conversations on a variety of topics, “sometimes over drinks.” The Je-
suitical team was at the forefront of America’s conclave content strat-
egy, partnering with “Inside the Vatican” to produce daily content that
combined on-the-ground analysis with faith sharing conversations.
Web Youtube Spotify Apple Podcasts
“Preach: The Catholic Homilies Podcast”: Entering its third
season, “Preach” has built a steady and engaged audience looking
for tools, best practices and faith-filled conversations about what
makes a good homily. Listeners continue to appreciate hearing from
well-known figures like Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J. while 2025 provided a
special opportunity to discuss Pope Leo’s Augustinian spirituality.

“Hark! The Stories Behind Our Favorite Christmas Carols”:
Americas beloved seasonal podcast climbed Apple Podcasts charts,
rising to number 2 in Music Commentary and number 6 in Music.
We also partnered with Skyview media to distribute 5 past episodes
of “Hark!” on radio stations across the country, most notably New
York Citys 98.7 fm on Christmas morning.

VIDEO PODCASTS
As podcast listening continues to surge globally, a new
medium is redefining the industry. Half of all podcasts
are now publishing video versions and Youtube has
become the largest podcasting platform. America’s
audio and video teams have responded by evolving
their production workflow to meet the demand. All
of Americas weekly shows—“The Spiritual Life with
Fr. James Martin, S.J.,” “Jesuitical,” “Inside the Vati-
can,” and “Preach: The Catholic Homilies Podcast”—
are now available to watch on Youtube.
Social Media
Like many publishers, America has faced declining
organic referral trac from social media platforms,
which increasingly encourage users to stay within
their ecosystems rather than click through to external
websites. At the same time, platform algorithms have
prioritized short-form video content. To remain rel-
evant in this shifting landscape, America has contin-
ued experimenting with short-form video explainers
and podcast clips.
We have also shifted how we approach social media—
from seeing it as a free source of trac to treating it as
a marketing platform. We now invest in paid promo-
tion to boost the reach of our posts and drive new
audiences toward our email list.
COMMUNITIES: CATHOLIC BOOK
CLUB & CATHOLIC MOVIE CLUB
As part of Americas coverage of culture and the arts,
we also continued to oer two regular reflections on
books and films, with an eye toward their relevance
and importance for Catholic culture.
Every Tuesday, senior editor James T. Keane
published a “Catholic Book Club” reflection
on a book, author or topic of particular inter-
est to our readers, often mining America’s
own 116 years of archival content to bring
voices new and old to the conversation. A
weekly Catholic Book Club newsletter helped
us bring that column to our readers’ atten-
tion.
America also oered regular reflections on
movies by contributor John Dougherty in
the “Catholic Movie Club.” Reviewing and
analyzing new and classic films, Doughertys
column focused on works “both Catholic and
catholic: rooted in our faith, but also univer-
sal… unbounded by genre and topic.

ADVANCEMENT
America Media Board Director,
Peter Howe, lives his faith
—and we are all the better for it.
As an engaged Fordham alum, Peter has a deep his-
tory with Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit ministries.
After sharing his time and talents as a trustee of
Fordham University, he joined the America Media
Board in 2013 and served as vice-chair, providing
leadership and support as the organization shift-
ed to a digital-rst media company. His nancial
acumen, strategic vision and Ignatian approach
was key in shepherding America to become the
vibrant, multiplatform media ministry it is today.
After a short hiatus, Peter has kindly agreed to re-
join the Board of America Media. His long history
with the organization and his enthusiasm and in-
sight about the diverse platforms that America
uses to spread the Good News make him a valuable
part of the organization’s broader leadership team.
He is especially excited that Americas content can
provide robust resources for Catholic education
and the promotion of a loving and inclusive church.
Peter has also been drawn to Father James Mar-
tin’s Outreach ministry, which provides support
to the Catholic LGBTQ community and those
who love and minister to them. As the proud and
deeply loving parent of a gay son, Peter believes
that Jesus calls him—and all of us—to be support-
ive of the LGBTQ community. After praying to his
late wife, Carol, he felt called to nancially support
Outreach’s mission and has provided signicant
funding to support the ministry’s many initiatives.
“I felt that Jesus was smiling,” Peter said when he
reected on his contributions to Americas media
ministry. We agree, Peter, and we are grateful for
the way you live Christ’s vision at America Media.

INVEST IN
HOPE FOR
THE FUTURE
2025
IMPACT BRIEF
STRATEGIC BUSINESS PARTNERSHIPS
The Strategic Partnerships team collaborated with clients
to create integrated marketing campaigns aligned with their
goals and budgets. These eorts enhanced visibility and
reach through innovative, customized strategies. We also
continued to strengthen relationships with our Jesuit and
Catholic partners across education, healthcare, retreats,
vocations, and religious products and services, generating
$640,000 in revenue during FY25.
Partnership highlights from the year included advertising
campaigns, creative services projects and event collaborations.
The return of SOMOS and Catholic Health Association of
the U.S., both resuming partnerships after a pause in the
previous fiscal year.
New campaign launches with smaller partners such as
the Shalem Institute, Sabbath Retreats, Gregorian Uni-
versity Foundation, Fine’s Gallery, and New Polity Press.
“The Spiritual Life” sponsorships in collaboration with Give
Us This Day and Catholic Health Association of the U.S.
Introduction of a new social media boosting opportunity,
with Liturgical Press, Catholic Health Association of the
U.S. and Gregorian University Foundation being the first
to participate.
Creative services projects for Alpha Sigma Nu, Cris-
to Rey Network, Ignatian Volunteer Corps and Cross
Catholic.
A conference kick-o cocktail reception and talk for
Alpha Sigma Nu, hosted by America Media Advertising.
PILGRIMAGES
America Media oers pilgrimages to the sacred places
of our faith. These special trips, led by Americas Jesuit
priests, oer unique opportunities for pilgrims from
around the country to join together to celebrate mass,
learn, pray, and reflect in holy sites throughout the
world.
Recent pilgrimages included a trip to Greece to follow in
the footsteps of Paul and the early Christians, Ignatian
Spain, two Jubilee pilgrimages to Rome and a journey
across Sicily to explore Greeks, Arab-Normans &
Jesuits: 2,500 Years on One Island.

Outreach, the LGBTQ ministry
founded by Father James Martin,
S.J., in 2021, and headed by Michael
O’Loughlin since 2024, carried out
its mission in creative ways:
Hosting its first-ever three-
day silent retreat, in Paoli,
Penn., for more than 70
people
Holding regional events in
New England, Chicago and
Los Angeles
Leading nearly 50 pilgrims
to Rome for an interna-
tional gathering of LGBTQ
Catholics
Convening an internation-
al dialogue for LGBTQ
Catholics at the headquar-
ters of the Society of Jesus
An LGBTQ Catholic Ministry
In addition to Father Martin and
Mr. O’Loughlin, Outreach benefits
from the contribution of Alessandra
Rose, America’s director of develop-
ment, and in June, John Consolie,
a recent graduate of the University
of Notre Dame (master of divinity),
joined the team as communications
and development associate.
Outreach continues to publish
original content each week, which
included daily video updates from
Rome during the election of Pope
Leo XIV, which attracted more
than 700,000 views. Outreach also
benefited from earned media in The
Washington Post, CNN, AP and else-
where during the conclave.
Several high-ranking church leaders
were among the contributors to the
Outreach site this year, including
Cardinal Blase Cupich, Cardinal
Óscar Andrés Rodríguez Maradiaga
and Cardinal Wilton Gregory. The
most-read article was published
just before the conclave, with Mr.
O’Loughlin looking at where various
cardinals stood on LGBTQ issues.
Fundraising remains robust for Outreach, including the establishment of
an endowment fund with initial pledges of more than $650,000. The annual
appeal and giving day grew significantly year over year and our donor base
continues to grow.
The next major gathering for Outreach will take place at
Georgetown University, June 19-21, 2026.

The best word to describe all that has been accom-
plished in the past year is community. You, along with
all our readers, listeners, and supporters, form our ev-
er-growing community of intellectually curious and
faith-filled subscribers.
Your desire for meaningful, enriching content, along
with your prayers and support, has brought this com-
munity together to mourn the passing of Pope Francis,
celebrate the historic election of the first American
pope, walk in the footsteps of St. Paul in Greece and St.
Ignatius in Spain, and find welcome and spiritual re-
newal at our Outreach retreat, along with many other
moments we shared. None of our work would be possi-
ble without you, nor would we want to do it without the
support of our community.
As we look ahead, I invite you to help us welcome even
more people into the America community. Share our
content, give a gift subscription, or bring friends and
family to one of our events or pilgrimages. We are stron-
ger together, and in todays often divided world, finding
a place where we can think deeply, pray faithfully, and
grow in hope together is more important than ever.
Thank you for being an essential part of this journey.
With gratitude,
Heather Trotta
Executive Vice President
