HOMEBOUND PARISHIONERS MAY RECEIVE
PLENARY INDULGENCES DURING THE JUBILEE YEAR
“The faithful who are truly repentant of sin but who
cannot participate in the various solemn
celebrations, pilgrimages, and pious visits for
serious reasons (especially cloistered nuns and
monks, but also the elderly, the sick, prisoners, and
those who, through their work in hospitals or other
care facilities, provide continuous service to the
sick), can obtain the Jubilee Indulgence, under the
same conditions if, united in spirit with the faithful
taking part in person, (especially when the words
of the Supreme Pontiff or the diocesan Bishop are
transmitted through the various means of
communication), say the prayers below
in your home or wherever you are confined (e.g. in
the chapel of the monastery, hospital, nursing
home, prison...) offering up your sufferings or the
hardships of your life.”
Decree on the granting of the Indulgence during the Jubilee Year 2025
called by Pope Francis, May 13, 2024
Begin with the sign of the Cross: In the Name of
the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Opening Prayer: Psalm 51: 12-14
Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a
new and right spirit within me. Do not cast me
away from your presence, and do not take your
Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of
your salvation, and sustain in me a willing spirit.
The Jubilee Year of 2025 is
entitled “Pilgrims of Hope.”
At a time where many
countries suffer from war,
climate change, and
financial hardship, Pope
Francis hopes that the year
ahead is an opportunity to
restore hope, a time for
renewal and rebirth. The
year began on the eve of
Christmas, 2024, with the
opening of the Holy Door in
the basilica of St Peter’s,
Rome, and will close on the
feast of Epiphany in 2026.
A jubilee year, also known
as a “holy year,” is a
special year in the life of
the Church currently
celebrated every 25 years.

The most recent ordinary
jubilee was in 2000, with
Pope Francis calling for an
Extraordinary Jubilee Year
of Mercy in 2015-2016.
