UN FAO Report at CGRFA-20: Global Crop
Diversity Under Threat
The Third Report on the State of the
World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food
and Agriculture (SoW3PGRFA) was
released by the UN FAO, Rome.
The report was launched during the 20th
meeting of the Commission on Genetic
Resources for Food and Agriculture
(CGRFA).
It covers data from 128 countries, along
with inputs from various research
institutions.
Previous reports were released in 1996
(first) and 2010 (second).
Globally, 60% of agricultural production
depends on just 9 crops: Sugarcane,
Maize, Rice, Wheat, Potatoes, Soybeans,
Oil palm fruit, Sugar beet, and Cassava.
Around 6% of farmer varieties (FV) and
land races (LR) diversity is at risk
globally.
The most threatened regions are Southern
Africa, Caribbean, and Western Asia,
while Southern Asia, Australia, and New
Zealand are at relatively lower risk.
Between 2011 and 2022, approximately 35
million hectares across 51 countries
conserved FV/LR diversity, covering 44%
of high-diversity crop areas.
On-farm (in-situ) conservation remains
challenging, with 42% of plant taxa
threatened at the species/varietal level.
Though ex-situ conservation has seen
progress, significant gaps still remain.
Many countries lack proper assessments to
manage disaster impacts, leading to issues
such as distribution of unsuitable
germplasm post-disaster.
In India, over 50% of FV/LR diversity is
at risk across five agro-ecological zones.
A positive initiative in India is the Seed
Hubs for Indigenous Pulse Production,
launched in 2016 by the Ministry of
Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare.
Due to this initiative, pulse production in
India increased from 14.76 million tonnes
in 2007-08 to 24.42 million tonnes in
2020-21.
