On behalf of the Midwest Poultry Federation (MPF)

At the heart of PEAK and its organization, Midwest

You can learn more about what PEAK and Midwest
Poultry Federation, a nonprofit organization, are all
about in Hall D Lobby, where we have a display

organizations and our current Board of Directors.
Thank you for being here and I hope you enjoy the

PEAK EDUCATION THEATER
The USDA Wildlife Services (WS) initiated the HPAI
Wildlife Biosecurity Assessment (WBA) project in
Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota as
a pilot project in 2023. The primary objective of this
project is to conduct evaluations of poultry facilities
that will focus on identifying strategies to reduce
the transmission of HPAI from wildlife to domestic
poultry.
To accomplish this objective WS will, at no cost to
producers, conduct on-site WBAs at commercial
poultry farms/sites. A WBA includes: 1) a survey of
wildlife observed on-site and adjacent to the farm
which will provide an index or baseline of the types
of wildlife in the area, 2) an overall assessment of
the farm site to identify attractants to wildlife and
an examination of the exterior of all
barns/structures for susceptibility of wildlife
entering the barn, and 3) if resources are available,
8:30 AM - 9:30 AM | 102 DE
Wildlife Biosecurity Assessments
and Mitigation Strategies
Presenters:
Jason Gilsdorf and David Marks, USDA - APHIS, Wildlife Services
Wildlife Services may also provide active management of some wildlife
at the farm to control or reduce wildlife that may threaten biosecurity.
After conducting the on-site evaluation, producers will be provided with
a written report containing recommendations to mitigate on-site
attractants to wildlife and recommendations for repairs to
barns/structures to reduce or prevent wildlife interactions with poultry.
A follow-up assessment will also be conducted, typically within 1-2
months of the initial visit, to assess the status of recommended repairs,
attractants, and ongoing presence of wildlife.
