I want to express my deepest gratitude to my advisor Dr. Hee-Jung Serenity Joo. This project
could not have seen light without her immense support and precious guidance. I will forever be
thankful to her for being my advisor, my friend, and my family when I was so far away from my
loved ones for such a long time. I felt less alone in my journey with her support and kindness.
She has encouraged me to be a better writer and a better person. I also want to thank her for
giving me an opportunity to be a Research Assistant. I would like to thank my committee
members Dr. Erin Keating and Dr. Sarah Elvins for their valuable suggestions, discussions, and
time. I also want to thank Dr. Lucas Tromly, our Graduate Chair, for his guidance and his
support. I want to acknowledge the kindness that I have always received from Anita King, our
Graduate Program Assistant. I am grateful for the support that I have always received from her.
My family, who has always been there for me as my biggest supporters, I thank them from the
deepest core of my heart. I want to thank my mother, Shipra Chowdhury; my father Tapan
Chowdhury; my sister, Trisha Chowdhury; and my aunt Usha, for believing in me. Without their
kind and loving words of inspiration and encouragement, I would not be able to come this far. I
will always be grateful for my parents who are my biggest supporters, in all the small or big
events of my life. I want to express my love and gratitude for my sister Trisha who has always
protected me like a superhero. I am thankful for the love and support that my aunt Usha has
always given me. I also want to extend my gratitude to Pranabesh Dutta, for being so thoughtful
in giving his kindness and time. A loving and beaming thank you to my little precious nephew
Vivan for showering me with his love. I also want to thank my other nephew, Swapnil, who is
not so little anymore and has grown up to be an amazing human being, who has been there with
me like a friend. I also want to thank my friend Tasneem for being the sweetest soul ever. I want
to extend my gratitude to Ruth and Dale, who have believed in me when it was hard for me to do
so. They became my family when I was so far away from home and who have helped me to see
light at the end of the tunnel. I express my immense gratitude to Ruth, who has helped me to
grow as a person. Without her, my journey would have stopped even before the beginning. I will
always carry the strength and the wisdom that she has given me, and for that, I will forever be
grateful to her. I want to thank Dale, who has always listened to my stories and who has made
my weekends so lovely and meaningful with her kind and joyful presence.
I would also like to acknowledge the financial support that I have received: the International
Graduate Student Entrance Scholarship, the DEFT Graduate Fellowship, the Cheryl Lamoureux
Memorial Prize, and the Research Fellowship from Dr. Diana Brydon.
