recognized as being from Tally
Hall.
The band originated in Ann
Arbour, Michigan. It started in
2002, when Andrew Horowitz
met Rob Cantor at the
University of Michigan, and
decided they wanted to start
music as a side hobby while
they studied. Andrew Horowitz
was not originally from
Michigan, however. Rob Cantor
had been friends with Zubin
Sedghi, and had also
participated in Joe Hawleys
film production AnonyMous.
While Andrew Horowitz had
been studying composition of
music, the other 3 hadn't been
studying music at all, but rather
various sciences. At this time
they had all come together to
form their little group, and had
included Steve Gallagher as the
drummer, another friend of
those who were from Michigan.
The name Tally Hall was not
the original, there were various
different ideas, but eventually
the band chose Tally Hall
because for the ones who grew
up in Michigan together, there
had been a small type ordeal
with trinkets and it was called
Tally Hall. Eventually, due to
what is believed to be creative
differences, Steve Gallagher left
the band and was later on
replaced by Ross Federman on
drums.
For the next few years, the
band created some songs and
demos, even an EP titled
Complete Demos. They
performed at their college often
and would also perform at local
bars and scenes, slowly gaining
more traction. In October of
2005, the band finally released
their first complete album,
Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical
Museum, but they did
re-release the next year under a
new label. They then went on to
perform their song Good Day
on The Late Late Show on
August 2nd, 2006, as well as
appearing in MTV's segment
You Hear It First in September
2006. The band appeared at the
2007 South by Southwest Music
Festival, and Then in the same
year, they were signed to
Atlantic Records and
re-recorded their first album
which was released on April 1st,
2008. In August 2008, Tally
Hall was a performer on the
BMI stage at Lollapalooza. Tally
Hall was invited back by The
Late Late Show with Craig
Ferguson on September 16,
2008, to help promote the
launch of Tally Hall's Internet
Show. They performed
"Welcome to Tally Hall”. The
band worked on several
projects after the completion of
Marvin's Marvelous Mechanical
Museum, including covering
the song "Smile Like You Mean
It" by The Killers.
The band was managed by
The Hornblow group, who also
manages bands like They Might
Be Giants, and Oppenheimer,
but switched in 2010 to Stiletto
Entertainment. When the band
formed Joe Hawley was
working on a comedy sketch
group called AnonyMous, and
made several Tally Hall songs
into videos with his group. In
addition to music, the band has
also created numerous movies.
The best known of these videos
is the music video for Banana
Man. In August 2008, the band
performed a three-song live
video set for LiveDaily Sessions,
including the songs Good Day,
Be Born, and Greener,which
premiered on August 28, 2008.
They have appeared on Fearless
Music several times, playing
songs such as Be Born, Ruler of
Everything, Misery Fell, Good
Day, and Banana Man. These
recordings can be found on
YouTube. In July 2014, band
member Rob Cantor released a
video in which he seemed to
perform his song "Perfect" by
singing spot-on impressions of
29 celebrities. In the video,
Cantor is accompanied by
another band member, Andrew
Horowitz, on piano and backing
vocals. The video received more
than 7,000,000 views in 10
days. Shortly thereafter, Cantor
revealed the video to be an
elaborate hoax.
Tally Hall was gaining a
fanbase, not very big, but big
enough to create a fan website
over the Tally Hall lore, called
HiddenInTheSand.com. There
