Open to the public
Most days, I still feel like the new guy here at the library and that feeling is
reinforced each time I learn yet again something new about our community
and our library’s services. However, moments ago, I found myself describing
both the thrills and challenges of a Charlevoix summer to a brand new team
member who recently joined us from Connecticut, and it occurred to me
that there are now quite a few library sta members who are “newer” than
I am.
Indeed, this last year in particular has brought numerous new faces and
personalities to our team. Recognizing this, I’ll grasp this opportunity to
introduce you to our newest team members while re-introducing you to the
phenomenal staers that have been with us for years.
As of this spring, Alena Engstrom is now sailing the ship in our Youth
Department. Alena’s passion for connecting families and providing
educational and recreational resources is already apparent. Joining Alena
are youth assistants Jessica Leidall and Olivia McLenon, both of whom have
enlivened our space for over a year now. Miss Laura continues curating our
teen collections while bringing families together for Story Time. She will be
taking a break this summer to spend time with her family, so a few dierent
folks will bring their own spin to Story Time.
Sadly, Ryan DeCoster, who had splendidly coordinated programming,
collection development, and stang for Adult Services is headed closer to
family in southwest Michigan. We will miss Ryan, but have recently hired
Sarah Benitez to ll his shoes. Sarah previously worked here at CPL but
has spent the last handful of years serving as an Information Research
Specialist for Munson Healthcare. She will be buoyed by an awesome team
that includes Beth Strawbridge, Sara Shifrin, and Tom Richards. Beth is, in
fact, our most veteran sta member with more than 21 years of experience.
Joining the adult team, while also taking over coordination of our busy
meeting rooms, is Reine Patterson. Reine is a recent graduate of the
University of Michigan School of Information and we are excited to hear her
new ideas.
Our consummate circulation crew, with over 55 years of combined
experience, is made up of super stalwarts Carrie Musser, Amy Carey, Pam
Kantola, Nancy Beghein, and Lisa Cinnamon. Rebecca Parker continues
her outstanding leadership of this team in providing above and beyond
customer service.
There are also numerous great team members keeping us humming behind
the scenes. Brian Wagner, our Facility Coordinator, has been superbly
maintaining our gorgeous facility for over ten years now. Davonne Rogers,
with over a dozen years of service, coordinates our volunteers, assists
meeting room users, undertakes promotions and is our administrative
organizer. Deb Ewald is our brand-new bookkeeper and is making sure
every one of your tax dollars is used responsibly. Zach Ledy is our new,
energetic tech-guy who has saved us from disaster multiple times already.
Abby Potter is our newest high school page and is responsible for shelving
all of your returned materials. Finally, in the summer you may see Health
Librarian Susan Kroll at our information desk answering your questions
while providing up-to-date health resources as she has for many years.
And that’s it… you have now met every member of our great team and while
the last few years have brought numerous new faces, I for one, am condent
that our team’s desire to serve this community by providing exceptional
library services continues to be steadfast.

Lightning Strike
Monday, May 15 • 6:00 pm
Twelve-year-old Cork O’Connor, who's one-
quarter Ojibwe, makes a horrifying discovery
while hiking one day in 1963 in Minnesota's
Superior National Forest - the hanged corpse
of Big John Manydeeds, the uncle of a friend of Cork's from
the Iron Lake Reservation. With no signs of foul play, the
death is quickly ruled a suicide, but Cork has his doubts.
Cork’s father, Sheri Liam O’Connor, searches for logical
answers, while Cork grapples with questions about death
and witnesses a shadow that haunts the Lightning Strike site
where Manydeeds was found. This novel is a prequel to the
popular Cork O’Connor series by William Kent Krueger.
Our Missing Hearts
Monday, June 19 • 6:00 pm
Bird Gardner lives quietly with his father in
a society ferociously intent on preserving
"American culture" after years of violence
and economic chaos, with books that are seen
as unpatriotic suppressed and the children
of dissidents, especially those of Asian origin,
sometimes forcibly relocated from
their homes. Now he wants to
nd his mother, a banned Chinese
American poet who left the family
when he was nine years old. Author
Celeste Ng has created an exquisite
story of unbreakable family bonds,
lifesaving storytelling (and seemingly
omniscient librarians!).
Horse
Monday, July 17 • 6:00 pm
A discarded painting in a junk pile, a skeleton
in an attic, and the greatest racehorse in
American history: in this novel by Geraldine
Brooks, an enslaved groom named Jarrett leads
the foal he's bonded with to racing victories across the 1850s
South. Eventually, the two meet up with an itinerant artist
who's won fame with his paintings of the stunning racehorse.
A gallery owner in 1950s New York becomes fascinated with
the paintings, but it's not until 2019 that a Nigerian American
art historian uncovers the true story of the horse and groom
and links up with a Smithsonian scientist who's studying
the horse's bones to learn the secret of its extraordinary
endurance.
The King of Condence
Monday, August 21 • 6:00 pm
James Jesse Strang was a lawyer, preacher,
newspaper editor, and state legislator. He was
also a charismatic Mormon leader who, in the
mid-nineteenth century, convinced hundreds
of fellow converts to join him on Beaver Island,
where he crowned himself “King of Heaven and Earth”.
Strang's remote outpost soon captured the attention of the
media and federal authorities for illegal activities including
theft, piracy, counterfeiting, and polygamy. Author Miles
Harvey brings us an intriguing account of one of the country's
boldest con men and Charlevoix county’s most infamous
residents.

Dive into this fun program where we’ll make a splash
with a mermaid story and craft at Michigan Beach Park
in Charlevoix. Kids will get to visit and take photos with
Mermaid Phantom – a real, live mermaid! All ages, no
registration required. In the event of inclement weather,
this event will take place at the library. Parents and
caregivers must accompany their children.
Crafternoon:
Tiny Terrariums
Monday, August 14
2:00-4:00 pm • Ages 8-14
Youth Activity Center
Let’s create some tiny worlds together! Your landscape
might be perfect for a fairy family or prehistoric creature.
You provide the container (an upcycled mason jar or bowl
would be just the ticket). We will provide natural materials
and some other doodads to put together a one-of-a-kind
setting. No registration required. Recommended for ages
8-14. While supplies last.

President’s Letter
“SUNSHINE on my shoulders makes me happy.
SUNSHINE in my eyes can make me cry.
SUNSHINE on the water looks so lovely.
SUNSHINE almost always makes me high.”
- John Denver
Welcome back Spring and Summer!
Many members of our Friends group have continued their
important work throughout the winter months. We are
receiving an ever increasing number of book donations.
Those books are the cornerstone of both our ongoing
book sale room and our now famous, annual book sale
each June. Be sure to put the dates of our June 2023 book
sale on your calendars and share with your neighbors and
friends! (See below for dates and times.)
Friends' members work in our book sale room every
Wednesday from 10:00 - 12:00, cleaning, pricing, and
shelving new donations of books, CDs, and DVDs. You
may nd some of us upstairs other days as well. This work
doesn't end. It is your donations and this work that leads
to thousands of dollars of donations to the library youth
area, and that's not all! Other projects we have and will
continue to contribute to include: the outdoor StoryWalk,
technology upgrades throughout the library, purchasing
Apples for After School, funding summer reading program
prizes, and much, much more. So, you see, our work is
important and we are happy to do it. Would you like to
help us? See our library sta for a membership form!
Sincerely,
Linda Linklater
President, Friends of the Charlevoix Public Library

Michigan Room Committee
Did you know that signicant pieces of art can be seen
throughout the library? In the Michigan Room you may
view several of them:
• Jim Annis’s print “Once Upon a Time, Charlevoix Harbor,”
1995, donated by the artist on the occasion of the library’s
opening in 2006.
• Pete Petersen’s original watercolor of Round Lake
“Negotiating the Tow,” 1988, donated by the Charlevoix
Council for the Arts/Charlevoix Waterfront Art Fair in
memory of Marina LaBlance, a Charlevoix Elementary
School teacher.
• Rosa Nettleton’s self-
portrait in oil, 1959, and
her watercolor of the
schooner “Rosa Belle,”
date unknown, donor
unknown. An artist and
historian, Rosa collected
news items from the old
Charlevoix Sentinel and
had them bound into a
volume now housed in
the Michigan Room.
Gio Colucci’s wood sculpture “Two Human Forms” and
stone sculpture “Reclining Nude,” and Abbott Pattison’s
bronze miniature “Figures in Motion,” dates unknown,
all donated by summer residents Nathan and Joanne
Cummings in 1967. The biography To Share, The Heritage,
Legend, and Legacy of Nathan Cummings can be found on
the Michigan Room shelves.
• In August an exhibit of local artists who participated in
the early art fairs will be on display in the Michigan Room
showcases. The 64th annual Charlevoix Waterfront Art
Fair will be held on Saturday, August 12, 2023.

Laptop
Counter
Following
patron requests,
this past winter the
library added a “laptop
counter.” This bar height
counter is equipped with
USB outlets, adjustable
height work chairs, and is made from the
same granite found throughout the library
giving this modern amenity a timeless
appearance. This new community work
space can be found in the back corner of the
adult reading room near the individual study
rooms.
Coming Soon:
Renaissance Science, Magic, and
Medicine in Harry Potter’s World
This September (9/5 through 10/1) the Library will host
the National Library of Medicine’s traveling six-banner
exhibit focused on the links between the Harry Potter
book series and the history of science. The six-banner
traveling exhibit delves into the origins of alchemy,
astrology, and natural philosophy as well as ethical
topics such as the desire for knowledge, the eects of
prejudice, and the responsibility that comes with power.
Lectures and activities for all ages throughout the month
will contribute to the experience. Watch for all the wand-
waving details!

Come ROCK the Charlevoix Public Library
Summer Dream Stream!
Beginning Thursday, June 8
Help us make a splash with our
Community Art Project this summer!
Stop in to decorate a rock or take a rock home to jazz-up - "whatever
oats your stone"… Once decorated, add your creation to the SUMMER
DREAM STREAM owing across our front lawn. Will we have a racing
rapids or a trickling stream? You decide!
Our Dream Stream kicks o in conjunction with the City of Charlevoix Summer
Open House Celebration. Please join us at the library on Thursday, June 8th from
5:00 - 6:30 pm to decorate rocks and enjoy family-friendly entertainment from
Tommy Tropic! Hot dogs will be available thanks to a generous
donation from the Charlevoix Kiwanis Club.
This event will be “live streaming” until after Labor
Day.
Thank you to Manthei Supply for their generous donation of all the
rocks, stones and pebbles we will ever need.
