The contents of this packet are designed to help you prepare for the U.S. History EOC retake. By reading this and
engaging with the review and study assignments in this packet, you are taking important steps to prepare for the U.S.
History retake, and your teachers are proud of your hard work and dedication as you prepare for the retake this
summer.
The first few pages of this packet will explain how to complete your review calendar and use this packet to review.
Read everything carefully – you do not need to complete every chapter in the review book, and this packet is designed
to ensure that you are studying the material that you most need to review.

Materials Needed to Review:
In order to complete the review activities outlined in this packet, you will need the following materials:
• Internet Access: To set up your review calendar and determine your review priorities, you will need to access
this website – txparentportal.emetric.net
o You will need your student access code and date of birth to log in to the testing portal and find your
U.S. History EOC Results from this year.
o Your student access code is provided on your STAAR Report Card. The unique access code contains
a combination of numbers and capital letters.
o You will only need internet access and access to this student portal on the first day of review
to review your EOC results and set up your review calendar. Detailed instructions on accessing
and reviewing data in the portal are included at the end of this packet (pages 15-24).
• This Review Packet: This review packet contains suggestions and answer keys for the review activities and
detailed instructions for how to log in to the student portal and access your EOC results.
• Review Book: You will need a copy of the following EOC review book:
o Mastering the TEKS in United States History Since 1877, Mark Jarrett, Stuart Zimmer, and James
Killoran
o Every YES Prep campus has a copy of this book, so you should be able to secure a copy from your
teacher. Below is a picture of the front cover of the book.
o DO NOT WRITE IN THESE BOOKS. Complete any reading notes and practice exams on a
separate sheet of paper.

Accessing Your EOC Results and Using Your EOC Results to Guide Your Review Plan:
To ensure that your review over the next few weeks is as focused as possible, you are going to access your EOC
results in the student portal (txparentportal.emetric.net). Using your EOC data, you are going to identify the four time
periods (chapters) from the Jarrett review book where you struggled the most on the EOC, review those chapters, and
then complete some practice questions over these periods.
Here are the steps you will take to determine your four priority time periods/chapters for review
Step #1: Accessing the Student Portal
Log in to txparentportal.emetric.net
Step #2: Accessing U.S. History EOC Results
Click on your U.S. History EOC results under “2017-18 School Year”.
Step #3: Finding Your U.S. History EOC Detailed Results
Once you are on the page for your U.S. History EOC results, click on the “Detailed Results” tab.
Step #4: The Detailed Results Tab
The “Detailed Results” tab will allow you to see, for each individual question on the EOC, which questions you
answered correctly versus incorrectly. Below is an example from an 8th Grade Reading Exam. Make sure you are on
this “Detailed Results” view.
Step #5: Finding the “Student Expectation” (TEKS) for Each Question
For each question that you answered incorrectly, you are going to click on the blue number in the “Item #” column. You
will need the “Student Expectation” number/letter for each of these questions to complete the chart on pages 4 and 5
of this packet to determine your four priority chapters for review.

Step #6: Matching EOC Results to Chapters from the Jarrett Study Book
Now that you know how to access the “Student Expectation” for each of the questions you answered incorrectly, use
this information to complete the “Missed Question #’s from the EOC” column in the table on the next page. You will
only need to complete this step for the questions you missed, not the questions you answered correctly.
In the “Missed Question #’s from the EOC” column, you will write the question numbers of the EOC questions that
you missed in the row for the corresponding chapters. For example, imagine that you missed question #36 on the EOC
and that the “Student Expectation” for question #36 is 7(A). You would then write “36” in the Chapter 12 row because
7(A) is covered in chapter 12 (see example below). Some student expectations appear in multiple chapters. Write the
question number in the row for each chapter where the student expectation appears. For example, if you missed a
question aligned to “Student Expectation” 3(B), you would write this question number in the rows for Chapter 5 and
Chapter 6.

Step #7: Determining Your Four Priority Review Chapters
Once you complete Step 6 for each question you missed on the EOC, tally up the total number of questions you
missed related to each chapter and write these totals in the “Total # of EOC Questions Missed in Each Chapter”
column. (see example below). The four chapters with the highest totals in this column will be the four chapters you
focus on during your review. For example, in the example below, you would prioritize Chapter 6 over Chapters 5, 7,
and 8 because you missed more questions related to this chapter than the other chapters.

Setting Up Your Review Calendar:
Write your four review priority chapters from the Jarrett review book in the space below. These are the chapters with
the highest totals in the “Total # of EOC Questions Missed in Each Chapter” column on Pages 4 and 5. If you had
chapters that tied, select the chapters that cover time periods with which you feel least familiar.

Suggestions for Reviewing Each Priority Chapter:
The review calendar sets aside three days to review each of your priority chapters. You should spend the first two days
for each priority chapter reading, processing, and reviewing the information related to the time period covered in the
chapter. Then, on day 3 for each priority chapter, you should take the “Checking for Understanding” practice exam
at the end of the chapter and use the answer keys at the end of this packet to check your work and review your results.
While reading the chapters and studying/processing the key ideas and concepts related to each chapter, you need to
do something as you read to help you actively process what you are reading.
Below are suggestions for how to spend your two review days for each priority chapter. Choose only one of the
suggestions below for each priority chapter.
Review Suggestion #1: Concept Mapping
At the beginning of each chapter, there is a list of “Key Terms and People in This Chapter” (see example below).
Create a concept map (see example below) that shows how each of these terms and people are related within the time
period covered in the chapter.
Each term or person will get their own bubble on the concept map. Include a definition, description, or visual
representation of the term or person in the bubble. Then, connect the term or person to another related term or person.
On the line connecting the terms/people, briefly describe how the terms/people are related.
An outline of a concept map is included at the end of each chapter.
As an alternative to this suggestion, you can also use the key terms and people to create a timeline that
represents the key events that occurred during the time period in the chapter. Similar to the concept map, if
you create a timeline, be sure to include a brief description or visual representation of each key event on the
timeline to help you process the key ideas and concepts in the chapter as you review.

Review Suggestion #2: Vocabulary Notecards
Using the “Key Terms and People in This Chapter” at the beginning of the chapter, create a notecard for each of the
key terms/people.
On the front of each notecard, include the term/person’s name and a visual to help you remember the term/person. On
the back of each notecard, include a definition/description of the term/person and explain how the term/person is
connected to one other term/person in the chapter. See the example below. The end of each chapter also has some
notecard samples.
Review Suggestion #3: Reading and Answering the Chapter “Essential Questions”
Each chapter begins with a series of essential questions that connect all of the information in the chapter. Create a
chart (see below) of these questions and, as you read the chapter, use the information to answer the questions.

Review Suggestion #4: Reading and Answering the “Applying What You Have Learned” and “Learning with
Graphic Organizers” Questions Throughout the Chapter
Throughout each chapter are guiding questions and graphic organizers designed to help you meaningfully process the
information you are reading (see examples below). One option during your review of a priority chapter is to read the
priority chapter and complete these questions as you read.
Chapter Practice Exams and End of Course Assessment Practice Exam:
At the end of each chapter is a “Check for Understanding” section. This section represents the practice exam for the
chapter. These chapter practice exams range from 14 questions to 30 questions. The answer key for each of these
practice exams is included at the end of this packet.
On June 21st, the review calendar on page 6 of this packet instructs you to take a practice end of course assessment.
This end of course assessment can be found on pages 392-409 in the Jarrett review book. The answers to this
practice exam can be found at the end of this packet.
