KOJONUP SPEECH AND DRAMA FESTIVAL 2016
On Wednesday 15th June we held our Primary Section; we had students from: Broomehill PS, Cranbrook PS, Frankland
PS, Gnowangerup DHS, Great Southern Grammar, Kendenup PS, Kojonup DHS, St Bernard‟s PS, St Mary‟s PS, St
Patrick‟s PS and Tambellup PS. The festival was opened by Mr Peter Callaghan with final instructions given by Mrs
Hewson. We had three rooms in operation, each having their own judge, scribes and MC who had to judge over 231
performances in total. This year we increased the categories for the Year 4 students; now all primary year groups have
the same categories.
On Thursday 16th June we held our Secondary Section; this year we were joined by Katanning SHS and Great Southern
Grammar, which shared in 47 performances.
Well done to everyone who participated, I think that you are all amazing for being able to get up on stage and perform.
All students performed extremely well which is a credit to their teachers, parents and the students themselves for being
prepared for their presentation. I would like to thank Mrs Clifton, Miss Anderson, Mrs Jannings, Miss Dezotti, Mrs
Lawrence, Mrs Bignell and Mrs Scolari for all the work that they have done with their students. You should be very
proud; they all did an amazing job.
A HUGE thank you to the following people who helped us make the Speech and Drama Festival a success; without your
help this special event would not be able to happen:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL Peter Callaghan
Welcome Parents and Carers to the week eight Newsletter. As I write we are in the very final stages of preparing for our
21st Kojonup Speech and Drama Competition. Over the last few weeks there has been a steady increase in the number
of small groups standing together declaiming their chosen pieces. I have been thrilled to see so many groups steadily
improving as they have responded to feedback from teachers and peers alike. Yesterday I listened with admiration
when, after completing their piece, a group of four then all critiqued themselves and each other in a firm yet supportive
way. No one was offended; no one got angry, they all just considered the remarks and used them to get better. Here,
before we even have the „big eventthese students have learnt one of the most powerful lessons needed for adulthood
criticism can be a good thing and it doesn‟t mean everyone hates you. I can‟t wait to see how these next two days
unfold and to hear the stories that will come from this wonderful experience.
Student‟s reports are in the final stages of edit and review by staff. We set very high standards for our reports and this
comes at the cost of significant time spent crafting the right words for the correct situation. It also means we pursue
excellence in our grammar and spelling… but, as we are mere human I am fearful there may still be some errors,
hopefully not on yours! But I do want you to know that the comments are the result of careful consideration and the
letter grades of attainment come after significant assessment and moderation meetings and as such tell us and you a
great deal about each child. On some reports there will be a request for a parent interview, please make the time for
this as it will be because a teacher has a genuine concern they feel they need to share with you. If the report raises any
issues for you, please arrange to see your child‟s teacher early in the new Term.
Given that Mrs Howe is so involved with Speech and Drama Festival [Wednesday and Thursday] it is quite possible that
this may not go out untill Friday. If so, the Kindergarten students will be getting their copy next week. This leads me to
remind you that you can receive a digital copy of the Newsletter just my giving Marcelle your email address. Worth a
thought. It also means you get a better quality view of any photos especially if your child is in one!
FROM THE PRIMARY DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Jayde Hewson
Speech & Drama
I would like to thank Mrs Marcelle Howe for all of the hard work she put in to make the Speech and Drama Festival a
very successful event. Also to the Primary Classroom Teachers and Mrs Scolari in Secondary for helping prepare our
students for the event. To all of the Parent Volunteers and Helpers who were able to lend a hand on the Festival day,
thank you very much!! Our students preformed AMAZINGLY and came away with numerous medallions and highly
commended certificates. Everyone who participated should be very proud of their efforts.

Don‟t forget Movie Night this Friday 17th June 2016! The student council has been working extremely hard to make this
event happen and must be commended on their great work. Movies will be running in the Primary Science Room, Year

those who have pre ordered dinner, drink and snacks.

The Food Sensations team will be here again on Wednesday 22nd June with a specific focus on Year 4, 5 and 6
students cooking healthy nutritious food. I can‟t wait to see what will be on the Menu this year!

have your attendance taken then to board the buses at 8:45am. Please make sure you have your water bottle, food for
the day and a change of clothes in case of rainy weather.

LIBRARY NEWS The pick for Lower Primary
CIRCLE
By Jeannie Baker
This is the story about the migration of bartailed godwits. These birds make the longest
unbroken journey of any migrating animal in the world, following ancient invisible
pathways. The godwits‟ journey is bookended by the story of a boy in a wheelchair who
dreams of flying and wishes he could join the migrating birds that he loves to observe.
As usual Jeannie‟s collage artwork is magnificent.

SPLINTERED SERIES
By A.G. Howard
Alyssa Gardner hears the thoughts of plants and animals. She hides her delusions for now, but she knows her fate: she
will end up like her mother, in an institution. Madness has run in her family ever since her great-great-great-grandmother
Alice Liddell told Lewis Carroll her strange dreams, inspiring his classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But perhaps
she‟s not mad. And perhaps Carroll‟s stories aren‟t as whimsical as they first seem???
There are four books in this series and they come highly recommended by Alexa Bell.

INTER-SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY
On Thursday 2nd June KDHS opened up our School Farm to host the Inter-School Cross County. Participating schools
on the day were Boddington, Pemberton, Katanning, Jerramungup, Gnowangerup and Ravensthorpe. There were over
190 competitors ranging in age from 9 through to 15, roughing hills, paddocks and some rough terrain covering 2, 3 or 4
km distances. Each school was provided the opportunity to walk their course prior to the event and there were plenty of
check-point stations along each route to ensure the safety of students at all times. It was wonderful to see that every
single competitor completed their course and were welcomed across the finish line to a roar of support from team-
mates. Once again the day was a success and KDHS is looking forward to expanding the competition in future years.
I am proud to announce that Kojonup were the lucky recipients of the Overall Winners and Handicap Shields. In
dramatic circumstances we managed to edge out Boddington by only 4 points to win the Overall Shield. In a script that
could not be better written by Hollywood, it went down to the final runner of the day, which was Christian Sanchez who
ironically scored 4 points for our team! It was a fantastic way to end the day.
There were many stand-out individuals on the day and most schools had at least one student take out first place in a
race. Kojonup excelled by winning three out of 14 races, placing second in five races and third in three races. Our
winners included Blake Simons (9 year boys new record), Isobelle Venn (9 year girls), Isabelle Plowman (14 year girls).
The second place recipients were Lachlan Trezise (10 year boys), Ashlee Ladyman (12 year girls), Alexa Bell (13 year
girls), Liam Hunter (13 year boys) and Emily Perkins (14 year girls), while Jayda Weazel (9 year girls), Amelia Venn (13
year girls), Maddy Moule (14 year girls) took out third place in their races.
Kojonup was also successful in winning the girls Overall Age Group Team Award”, which
was won by the 14 year old girls who took out the trifecta in their race (Isabelle Plowman
1st, Emily Perkins 2nd and Maddy Moule 3rd). A special mention must also go to the 13 year
girls who accumulated a very high total of 80 points. The 9 and 12 year boys from
Boddington were the joint winners of the boy‟s award on 74 points. Kojonup had many
other successful teams which are outlined in the tables below.
While the day ran smoothly and seemed to fly by, organising and running an Inter-School
event successfully is only made possible when there are plenty of willing hands. I would
like to extend my gratitude and thanks to the staff, parents and student helpers, in
particular Edward Melville and the Sports Management Committee who are always the first
port of call when it comes to planning and organising an event. I would also like to thank
the BMC Embroidery for donating the Team Award Flags, Syd and Lynne Matthews, Bev and Kevin Broome for opening
up their paddocks to parking, the KDHS Canteen for supplying lunch and the ambulance officers who were kept
extremely busy at the finish line. Last but not least, I would like to thank each of the participating schools, whose
collaboration was imperative in making this event a reality.
The day was not only about competition, it was also about creating new opportunities, making networks and meeting
new people. It was a great feeling to be surrounded by such community spirit and to see our students partaking in the
event. Well done to the Team Captains, Christian Sanchez and Jess Chambers, who both excelled on the field and
represented our school throughout the day with maturity and leadership. With students like this I am sure we can
continue to lead at future interschool events.
