FGI Elects New Board of Directors
The FGI inducted new Officers and a new Board of
Directors during its biennial membership meeting in
Louisville, Kentucky on March 4, 2025 at the
Geotechnical Frontiers 2025 Conference. In addition to
introducing the new Officers and Directors, Timothy D.
Stark, FGI Technical Director and Professor of Civil
Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign, reviewed the current state of the FGI,
including current activities, finances, accomplishments,
and goals of the research institution.
The newly elected FGI Officers will serve a two-year term (2025-2027) and are:
• President – Patrick Elliott (Colorado Lining International/Viaflex)
• Treasurer – Brian Fraser (Layfield Geosynthetics)
• Secretary – Maya Innis (Leister Technologies)
The recently elected FGI Board of Directors also will serve a two-year term (2025-2027) and are listed
below in alphabetical order:
• Annette DeHavilland (Ohio Environmental Protection Agency)
• Todd Harman (Hallaton Environmental Linings)
• Ron MacKenzie (Inland Tarp & Liner)
• Neil Nowak (WSP)
The FGI is dedicated to advancing the use of fabricated flexible geosynthetics through education,
research, and technology transfer. The FGI is a consortium of manufacturers, fabricators/installers,
designers, regulators, and material suppliers of fabricated geomembranes.
FGI at Geotechnical Frontiers 2025
The FGI held its biennial membership meeting, hosted a
technical session on Containment Applications, and had a
display booth at the Geotechnical Frontiers Conference,
March 2-5, 2025 in Louisville, KY. The Women in
Geosynthetics Group also held a Round Table Discussion
and hosted an Espresso Bar at the FGI Display Booth. The following five presentations were presented
during the Technical Session and a PDF of the presentations can be found on the FGI Website:
1. Hinkle Reservoir Replacement Liner, Baffle, and Floating Cover- Elliott (Viaflex) & Hilts (HCG)
2. New Developments in Prevention and Protection of Water Resources. Why EIA-PVC Alloys Are the Best
Choice for Long-Term, Improved Performance – Lens (Cooley)
3. Over 30 Years of Leak Location Surveys: The Cliffs Notes Version – Kemnitz (LLSI)
4. Geomembranes Sustainability through Longevity: Mammoth Cave – Schwarz (Seaman)
5. Challenging Environmental Containment for Large Crude Oil Tank Storage Facility - Fraser (Layfield)

Tuesday, May 13, 2025 at Noon CDT: Geomembranes for Produced Water and Brine Containment
This webinar, presented by Brian Fraser and Greg Parrent of Layfield Geosynthetics, will focus on the
applications of geomembranes for containment of produced water and brine liquids in earth lined ponds,
pits, reservoirs, and above ground tanks. Key topics will include today’s best practices in subgrade
preparation, geomembrane selection, geomembrane installations, including thermal wedge and extrusion
welding, and CQA, including electrical leak detection testing for produced water containment. We will also
showcase project profiles of single and double-lined containment systems for large-scale storage in oil &
gas and mining applications.1.0 PDH
Thursday, June 5, 2025 at Noon CDT: Retaining Wall Global Instability
This webinar, presented by Dr. Timothy D. Stark of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will
present a case history of a cantilever soldier pile retaining wall with tie-back anchors for a county
roadway. In particular, this webinar will focus on the following four main issues: (1) adequacy of the
subsurface investigation, (2) design of the soldier pile wall with tie-back anchors, (3) construction of the
soldier pile wall system, and (4) cause of the failure about seven months after its completion. This webinar
has been approved by The Practicing Institute of Engineering for accreditation in the state of New York for
1.0 PDH.

FGI Creates Anchor Trench Calculator
The FGI's Anchor Trench Calculator estimates the runout length
or anchor trench dimensions required to prevent pullout of the
geosynthetics from an anchor trench. The calculator considers
three anchor trench configurations: one vertical side, an L-shape,
and a U-shape. This calculator solves force equilibrium
equations to assess the length of runout, i.e., distance from the
slope crest to the front side of the anchor trench or the depth and
width of the anchor trench given the available runout length. The calculator includes typical input
parameters to conduct sensitivity analyses, such as, allowable geomembrane tensile yield strength and
soil backfill properties. The calculator can be used with for reinforced and unreinforced geomembranes.
Other calculators created by the FGI include:
Carbon Footprint Calculator
Pond Leakage Calculator
Panel Weight Calculator
Geomembrane Defect Leakage Calculator
