TALENT
“In my youth, dance was my soul's truest
expression, a joy that knew no bounds. Life's
challenges might have dimmed that passion, but I
believe it's never too late for any of us to reignite
the flames of our once-loved talents and shine
brighter than ever before.”
This one goes to the
talents we left
along the way.
Written by: Cliantha Phillips
This led to the start of many
routines; it led to me leading
dance classes and getting the
Sunday school ready for play's
dance routines done in church.
Honouring my talent has led
me to so many great things. It
led me to spend a year abroad,
just honouring and dancing for
the masses. It led to so many
great things and so many
incredible experiences; those
are the moments I treasure.
Dance has always been there,
no matter what I was going
through. It allowed me to
express every emotion and
feeling without judgement. I
got so much out of every
dance session.
I wish this wasn’t just all a
memory but still happening in
my life daily. But I haven’t
danced in the past few years. I
grew up. My time got occupied
with life. I gained weight;
every dancer knows when that
happens, you become heavier
on your feet and everything is
just harder to execute.
Eventually, I stopped trying.
So why am I telling you this? I
know there are many of us
that left our talents behind.
Trust me, I get it.
We've grown. We have big
people's problems now. With
that being said, never forget
what it did for you and how it
made you feel. Your talent
doesn’t have an age limit. So
to the person that used to
sing, I really hope you start
doing it again; to the person
that would always draw or
create poetry, I really hope you
take out a notebook and start
honouring your gift again.
Whatever talent you’ve been
blessed with, I really hope you
find it again and start
honouring it again.
As always, enjoy the journey.
I remember when I was younger I
would fall asleep listening to music
and working out routines in my
mind; that state of calm led to my
slumber. I thought everyone fell
asleep that way, dancing in their
thoughts. It seemed pretty natural
to me. It's only when I got older did
I discover that not everyone falls
asleep that way. One day I just
decided to dance and play out the
routines that were engraved in my
mind. That turned into a daily
occurrence. Every day I would blast
music and just dance. In those
moments, it was just me, my
feelings, and the outlet that best
helped me express whatever I was
feeling. Nothing brought me more
joy than hearing a new song and
immediately having an idea for a
killer dance routine. This turned into
my safe haven. I was never vocal,
but best believe I would dance it
out. One day I just mentioned the
concept I had in mind for the elderly
in my church. My father called the
pastor and shared my thoughts.
The next thing I knew, I was told
that I was dancing in front of the
congregation. I backed out and
highlighted all the reasons why this
was a terrible idea, but everything
was set in motion and I had to run
towards being exposed and
showing my talent. Sunday came,
and I showed up; I honoured my gift
and alents and left everything I had
on stage.
Don’t you love the fearlessness that
comes with youth? The performing
for the family as a child without the
fear of anyone else’s opinion. The
dancing to your own beat with joy
and pride, not worrying if you were
off beat. The releasing and just
enjoying something just because
you could and just because it
brought you joy. So why did we let
it go, and when did it get harder
doing the things that once came so
easily?

Gender is an experience, Sex is Assigned. These
two facts are constantly used as sparring
opposites, where they are treated as though one
fact MUST assume the meaning of both. One
fact must be all-encompassing, interchangeable,
and complimentary. Yet the fact remains that
they couldn’t be any more different from each
other.
Gender identity is defined as a personal
conception of oneself as male or female (or
both, or neither). This concept is intimately
related to the concept of gender roles, which is
defined as the outward manifestations of
personality that reflect the gender identity.
Gender identity, in nearly all instances, is self-
identified, because of a combination of inherent
and extrinsic or environmental factors; gender
role, on the other hand, is manifested within
society by observable factors such as behaviour
and appearance.”
-Shuvo Ghosh, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics
When I was a wreathed in existence, it took only
a moment for the doctor to sum me up by my
parts and say, “It’s a girl.” Of course, I wasn’t
just a girl, I was a human being mewling from
birth, I was a new sibling to a sister, I was my
mother and father’s hopes and dreams. I was
supposed to be in a world of my own. But my
first human interaction was for my identity to be
imprisoned into the binary – I was a girl and set
to experience the world as a girl.
I am She; I am He;
I am They; I am We.

There is trauma inflicted by the invalidation of yourself by
the world just because everyone is so invested in how a
part of you must determine all of you. Your values, needs
and wants are invalidated because of a part of you.
As much as I had friends who identified as girl, and as
much as I was hanging out with the boys, I always knew
that I never quite felt, presented, experienced, and
interpreted my actions and those things that I observed
the same way that they did. And they would ask me
“What kind of girl are you?” when I relentlessly
disappointed their expectations, rattling my gender
dysmorphia. I wasn’t dysmorphic because I disappointed
them, I disappointed them because I was dysmorphic. I
was masculine presenting in one instance, feminine
presenting in another, and my sex being questioned
synonymously with my gender expression made me
question myself. When I presented feminity, I wasn’t one
with the GIRLS, because I didn’t value that label being a
feature of mine.
When I presented femininity, I didn’t value being a girl.
When I presented androgyny, I didn’t value being a Girl
and a boy. I was always trying to be myself and free from
the confines of judgment that would have me decide. I
wanted to be a world of my own and create of myself all
that I desired to be. I could be nothing and everything all
at once. No one part of myself will determine all of me.
As complex, self-determining sentient organisms there is
an ardent desire for control and limitation and building the
world around those very few and certain factors.
Therefore, the shoe must fit. The key must lock. The items
must go into the assigned box. We treat ourselves and
each other with expectations that limit who we want to
be, because deep down we know we want to be more
than the world has decided for us. We want to be
actuaries, and painters, and swimmers, and wine tasters
and makers simultaneously. We want to be more than a
singularity with gravitating features. We want to be a sum
of many things and more. I am many things and queer. I
am not my gender, or lack thereof. I am she ; I am HE; I am
Them. I am ME.

DANIEL ANDERSON

INTERVIEW:
From Humble Beginnings to
Theatrical Stardom: Daniel
Anderson's Unwavering
Pursuit of Artistic
Excellence
When I first witnessed your
performance of "Vincent" at the
Theatre On The Square in
Johannesburg back in June 2023, I
was immediately captivated. Your
voice, combined with your
compelling storytelling and
commanding stage presence, made
me an instant admirer. Thank you for
taking the time to do this interview
with me.
"Wow, what a compliment! I feel
greatly honoured to be part of The
Something Guy's inaugural magazine
edition. You've created such a
beautiful space for us as artists
through your online platform already -
this just takes it to another level. I also
want to take this opportunity to say
thank you for the detailed and
wonderful review that you wrote on
"Vincent" during our last run. Those
words give us a lot of mileage and so
we are deeply grateful."
While many know you from your
performances and the roles you've
played, that's just one side of you the
audience sees. Could you introduce
yourself in your own words for our
readers?
"I am truly living a life for which I have
always asked - touring, on stage,
doing what I love - but really I am a
small-town boy from an ever smaller
seaside village in the Eastern Cape. I
do my best to see the world through a
love-lens and I am driven by a deep
love for my family and for my God.
I am ambitious and I work hard to hop
onto every driftwood of opportunity
that passes only once with vigour and
commitment. I am a dreamer and a
searcher for life's beauty - which can
be found in everything when you look
hard enough."
Daniel, you are a dynamo on stage.
But when the curtains fall, how do
you find your moments of calm and
relaxation?
"Time spent with my family on our
little "stoep" at home - the sound of
the waves crashing in the background,
music, a braai and a good glass of red
wine is always a good start. But true
relaxation is always found in the
ocean - most often with a pair of
goggles and a snorkel. Those
moments are the antidote to the crazy
world and I schedule them in as
absolute musts."
From rocking those Elvis Presley
moves to lighting up the stage with
award-winning cabarets – wow,
what a rollercoaster of theatre
adventures you've had! What
motivates you and gives you
inspiration for when you perform?
"I am motivated by the knowledge
that I have never - and will never -
"arrive" fully in my craft. It is always a
process of developing and growing
and becoming. There is no glass
ceiling and every single performance
reminds me of just that. I am inspired
by the boundless resources that I have
at my fingertips to develop and grow -
most brilliantly these are found in the
crazy amazing works of theatre that
play in all the theatres in our beautiful
country. There is no greater joy in
digesting these works, experiencing
them and learning from them."
You've given us so many memorable
performances in the past. Do you
have any upcoming projects or roles
you're excited about?
"I realise I am in such a fortunate
position - one where there is always
another project or two or three in the
development pipeline while another is
walking the boards.

This festive season I will be making
Durban my home for a few months as I
play Aladdin in Kickstart's family
pantomime. Thereafter Wela Kapela is
launching an exciting Mother Tongue
project, which will see me and a crew
of actors trekking off the beaten track
across the Eastern Cape. We'll be
taking a puppet production of Aesop's
"Jackal and Wolf" fables to schools
where accessing any kind of theatre
may be a challenge or even an
impossibility. The production will be
performed in the mother tongue or
language of learning and teaching that
is predominant at each school (either
English, Afrikaans or IsiXhosa).
In between all of this, Amanda and I are
working on a new one-man show
which should premiere in May 2024 -
but I'm afraid that's all I can say for
now... hehe"
Throughout your journey in the world
of theatre, have there been any
mentors or influential figures who've
significantly shaped your approach or
inspired you?
"Oh, so so many! I feel like I am literally
a product of these people - like a piece
of clay that they have all had their hand
at moulding and nurturing… Of course,
there has always been mom and dad -
Dean and Cresta Anderson.
They motivate me because they just
know how to handle me (and this is no
mean feat): they are never too much,
never too little - they're just enough
and just right. hey support, they advise
and they love… what more can a boy
ask for? My whole family (and there are
a LOT of us) is close and tight and hey
have my back. I miss them so much
when I am not at home.
I was fortunate to be at a school that
made it their mission to employ the
best of the best in terms of "the arts"
teachers.
Firstly, my beautiful and wonderful
vocal coach Leoni Armour. She knows
my voice inside out and therefore I trust
her with it and trust her to have hard
conversations with me about it.
I started working with Leoni when I
was 11… and still today, Leoni is the
lady who listens to the songs I have to
sing in "Vincent", for example. I get
excited for every session with Leoni
and they always come at just the right
time, to make you sound better and
stronger - I just wish more people
could experience working with her.
Marc Williams, my drama teacher, my
mentor (on stage, off stage, all over) -
the guy who showed me that discipline
in this industry gets you to the places
you need to be and that passion fuels
you when there is nothing else left. I've
cried so many tears with Marc - about
things we have heard or seen or felt.
They are etched in my heart and I think
about them when I work - all the time.
These are priceless exchanges. Marc is
a priceless man
Jacques du Plessis - one of our musical
directors/pianists - for "Vincent".
Jacques also taught me music for much
of my high school career and today he
is a dear friend, a constant laugh and
guide. Jacques is the guy you call when
your day is going to the dogs and you
don't know what to do. He knows what
to say to chase the blues and when
you're out there, touring and working
the blues do creep in. How amazing
that Jacques is there to catch these
days and, apart from all of this, he is
bloody insane on those keys!
And then, last, but not least - Amanda
Bothma. My reason and rhyme.
Amanda took me under her wing as a
chubby-cheeked, over-eager little 10-
year-old singer and she worked with
me until I started to become an actor
(where I still am today).
She teaches me how to tell stories and
she taught me how to live life - or
more how to squeeze every millilitre of
zest out of the lemons that make each
day's sweet lemonade. There is a
certain rareness about the kind of
working relationship that Amanda and
I have. This allows us to do good work
and to get excited about everything we
do. I cherish you deeply, mama
Amanda.
Thank you for giving me this life."

You've been Alladin, Prince Topher,
Daniel Beauxhomme and even
embodied Vincent van Gogh – Which
character or person would be a wild,
unexpected leap for you, but one
you'd be thrilled to do someday?
"I just saw a production of Kander &
Ebb's "Cabaret" on the West End in
London. I'd give my left arm to play the
Emcee… to be able to let go in a
character like that must be so
liberating. I know it will happen
someday - so I'm using this
opportunity to put it out into the
universe. In terms of wild and
unexpected leaps… I'd love to play
Frank n Furter in Rocky Horror… but
then again, which theatre boy in his
right mind doesn't - so is that even so
wild? I don't know, haha!"
In "Vincent – his quest to love and be
loved", you've used various genres of
music to narrate Van Gogh's life. If
you had to pick one song that
encapsulates the essence of your own
life, which would it be and why?
"Every Time We Say Goodbye - Cole
Porter… I don't think there's a song that
speaks about feeling an emotion
(whatever that emotion may be)
as intensely as this one does. I like to
think that I feel everything deeply and
with heightened meaning. My life has
been like that - I can't stop feeling more
and more and evaluating these feelings
and then feeling them even deeper.
Hopefully I can keep creating."
With your flair for bringing various
epochs to life, if you had a one-day
ticket to any moment in history, where
would you zoom off to and what
would you do?
"I'd visit Vincent on that fateful day in
1890 and I'd sit with him and tell him
how much he was going to change the
world."
If you had a free day with no
responsibilities, how would you
choose to spend it?
"On the beach, on the Wild Coast -
hopping between gullies and rock
pools, finding fish and all the other
beautiful things under the sea. I do this
from time to time… the best day ever,
every time!"
Hit me with your killer karaoke track!
"Grace Kelly – Mika"
Given your vast experience at such a
young age, what advice would you
offer to someone reading this who
thinks, "I wish I could pursue this,
but…"?
"My advice would be to "just do it"…
even if that sounds cliche. In this
industry, the gates and obstacles that
are put up for us seem to be unending
and insurmountable, but they're often
put up by ourselves. To "just do it"
means to make your own way in the
craziness by showing up, working
hard and stripping away your own
limits. If you think you can't be the
lead, you're right.
What you think is what you do, is
what they will see, is what they will
believe , is what they will feel.
Importantly also, be kind to yourself
and to your instrument (your body):
get enough sleep, don't drink too
much alcohol and find a meaningful
exercise routine."
Favourite Drink? "Red Wine!! Or Coke
Light for the day time, of course ;)"
Your go to favourite TV Series?
"Schitt's Creek… or The Crown…
depending on my mood."

theatre was a South African one. With the

Men’s Skin Care FAQ’s
SKINCARE WITH LYNDALL JACKSON
Many men approach skin care with
caution, many questions and
trepidation. Below, I have answered
some of the most common
questions that gets asked of The
Something Guy. Hopefully yours
will be answered here, if not, feel
free to get in touch and I can clear
some things up for you, like your
skin.
What are the benefits of using
toner? Toners are the unsung
heroes of the cleansing routine.
They help to complete the cleansing
step by restoring the skins pH to
normal as well as removing any
residue that you may have missed
with the cleanser. As the toner stays
on the skin, their hydrating and
restoring ingredients are extra
important as this gets the skin ready
to absorb the next products into the
skin more efficiently.
I work outside daily and can’t
reapply my sunscreen as my hands
are dirty. What should I do?
Sunscreen is a very important part
of the skin routine, regardless of
how much time you spend outdoors.
Make a point of reapplying
sunscreen regularly, even if you
need to take a break, wash your
hands, apply sunscreen and then
get back to work.
What should I do to treat razor
burns or ingrown hairs? The best
razor burn is the one you never get.
Preparing your skin to shave
correctly and using a good razor
make a real difference when it
comes to avoiding ingrown hairs
and razor burns. Cleanse your skin
and exfoliate before shaving to
release any ingrown hairs. This also
gets rid of the little bumps on the
surface of the skin and reduces the

incidence of cuts. I recommend
DermaFix Gentle Cleansing Gel and
DermaPolish for this step. Ingrown
hairs need to be exfoliated and
treated with anti-inflammatory
ingredients. DermaFix CBD Oil is
ideal for this as it has anti-
inflammatory, anti-bacterial as well
as anti-oxidant properties. This
means that it will soothe, assist in
preventing break outs as well as
nourishing the beard area.

These wonder wipes are not face
cleansing wipes. No wet wipes here
thank you. These are serums that
are packaged in a convenient
container to allow easy application.
They are both exfoliating as well as
nourishing and treat the skin for
pigmentation, ageing, acne and
ingrown hairs. That’s a pretty
versatile product if you ask me!
I have saggy eyes and dark marks,
what can I do? There are many in
clinic treatments that can help with
this concern. Home care is essential
in addressing saggy eyes and dark
marks as well. Consult your
favourite accredited skin care
professional for treatment after a
thorough skin assessment. For home
care, try out DermaFix Circle Light.
This eye treatment will help to
tighten, lighten and brighten the
whole eye area.
Do I have to exfoliate my skin
daily? You do not need to exfoliate
your skin every day although with
some exfoliators it is safe to do so.
Exfoliators that contain scrub like
ingredients can be too harsh on the
skin and I recommend avoiding
scrubs altogether. If you’re set on
them though, keep their use to once
a week to minimize the amount of
irritation to the skin. An excellent
exfoliating product that can used on
alternating nights is DermaFix MD
Mandelic Retexturising Wipes.
The ingredients on skin care
products make no sense to me.
What must I look out for that I
would understand in skin care?
This is where we come in. As
qualified skin care professionals, we
do know what all those ingredients
do as well as how to read the labels
and make useful deductions. There
are things that you can look out for
such as harmful ingredients.
Parabens, hydroquinone etc. That
will hold you in good stead at least
to not purchase anything harmful.
Can I use skin care wash on my
beard as well? It is perfectly fine for
you to use your recommended face
wash on your beard as well.
Although if you have a long beard, it
might be worth it to shampoo it with
a gentle sulphate-free shampoo to
maintain it’s luster.
Do you moisturise at night only or
in the morning as well? I cannot
stress this enough. You need to be
cleansing your skin morning and
evening which means that you need
to be moisturising twice a day as
well.
How can I manage oily skin
effectively? Prepare yourself for me
to sound like a stuck record. This is
where we come in. As a skin care
professional, we know what to look
for in terms of why your skin would
be oily and guide you on the best
path to address and maintain a
healthy skin. Often people think their
skin is oily and start on the strongest
acne products they can find. Big
mistake. This can strip the skin’s
barrier and open your skin up to
more problems like sensitivity,
hyperpigmentation, more oiliness as
well as increased breakouts.
I don’t like using so many products,
it gets confusing. Is there one that
works for everything? Wouldn’t that
be nice? No. There is no one product
that can do it all, although that are a
number of products that are
multifunctional and this is where you
need to focus if you like your routine
simple. You’ll need a cleanser, a
moisturiser and a sunscreen.
That’s the minimum for a basic skin
routine. Fortunately you can get all of
these products from DermaFix that
will suit your skin type and concerns.
If you have room for one add on,
make it DermaFix Brightening or MD
Mandelic Retexturising Wipes.

WHAT ARE THEY ACTUALLY SAYING?
Firstly, HA! Gen Z you are feeling what us
millennials felt... Gen Alpha has entered the chat
and they are not at all Skibidi with their fanum tax.
They are all grown up and taking control of their
own language and slang. Scary isn’t it? However,
don’t stress... most of us dont understand either one
of you and your overlapping language anyways.
GEN ALPHA AND GEN Z
Language is like a
chameleon; it changes its
colours as it moves from
generation to generation.
The young folks of today,
belonging to Gen Z and Gen
Alpha, have brought a lot of
new terms that some may
find puzzling.
Gyat?
Simp?
Cap?
Each generation plays a role in sculpting the way we speak,
adding their own lexicon of phrases, acronyms, and
terminologies that leave the older generations either perplexed
or intrigued. And let's be honest, it's often a bit of both. Today,
we're turning the spotlight on the youthful linguistic magicians of
Generations Z and Alpha. We'll take you on a whirlwind tour
through the very vocabulary that is shaping conversations, both
online and off. By the end, you'll feel like you've been handed a
cheat sheet for interpreting the younger generations.
Language is a medium of expression that is continually
reshaped by each generation, transforming it into
something uniquely reflective of their identity. Yet,
occasionally, new terms emerge that leave us baffled,
prompting the question, "What on earth are they saying?"
Each generation leaves its fascinating mark on language,
moulding it to fit its own contemporary nuances.

Guess what? The underwater world isn't just about majestic whales or colourful
clownfish. Dive a little deeper, and you'll discover some of the ocean's most enchanting
and lesser-known residents. Today, let's chat about one of the ocean's cutest and most
fascinating critters: the Sea Sheep Slug!
First off, can we just say, "Aww!"? The Sea Sheep Slug, scientifically known as
Costasiella kuroshimae, is a tiny sea slug that's as adorable as its name suggests.
Measuring just about 1 cm in length, this little gem is as petite as it is charming. With its
soft, green, and fluffy appearance, it genuinely looks like a tiny sheep grazing
underwater. But here's the twist: this little 'sheep' doesn't munch on grass. Instead, it
feeds on algae and performs... wait for it... photosynthesis! Yes, just like plants!
Imagine a creature so tiny, so cute, and yet so powerful that it harnesses the sun's
energy to nourish itself. The Sea Sheep Slug has chloroplasts from the algae it
consumes stored in its body. These chloroplasts allow it to convert sunlight into energy,
a process we usually associate with plants. It's like having a mini solar panel on its back!
How cool is that?
Every ripple, every grain of sand, every drop of water in our vast oceans holds a story,
and the Sea Sheep Slug is one of those magical tales. So, the next time you think of the
ocean's wonders, remember our little photosynthesising friend, and smile!

Un-BEE-lievable Facts
About Our Tiny
Winged Friends
Are you ready to go on
an un-BEE-lievable
adventure into the
fascinating world of
bees? Well, buckle up,
because we’re about to
go right into the
buzzworthy secrets of
these tiny winged
wonders. Not only are
they responsible for
pollinating our planet
and giving us honey, but
they also have some
seriously rad tricks up
their sleeves.
So, without further ado,
let’s get our bee-rd on
and explore the awe-
inspiring universe of
bees!
The Bee-ginning:
Where it all started
Did you know that bees
have been around for a
whopping 100 million
years?
Yeah, you read that
right! These little guys
have been partying with
the dinosaurs, making
them some of the most
ancient insects still
buzzing around today.
So next time you see a
bee, give it some props
for its staying power!
Bee a mind reader:
Dancing is their
language
Get ready to bust a
move, because bees
communicate through
dance! Yep, these
groovy insects use a
series of wiggles and
shakes to tell their hive
mates where to find
food. The famous
waggle dance” is a
bee’s way of saying,
Hey bro, there’s some
sweet nectar over
there!
Pretty cool, huh?
Super-bee: Nature’s
tiny flying champions
If you think bees are just
slow, bumbling
creatures, think again!
These little speedsters
can fly up to 15 miles
per hour and beat their
wings a mind-blowing
200 times per second.
Plus, they can cover up
to five miles in a single
foraging trip. Talk about
some serious bee
power!
Gender bender: It’s a
bee’s life
In the bee world, the
ladies really run the
show. Female bees, or
worker bees, do all the
foraging, cleaning, and
nursing of the larvae.
And the queen bee?
She’s the head honcho,
the one and only egg
layer, with a lifespan of
up to five years! But
don’t feel too bad for
the guys; male bees, or
drones, have one job –
to mate with the queen.
Though their lifespan is
shorter, they get to live
out their days in bee-
style luxury.
Bee-brainiacs: Tiny but
mighty smart
Don’t be fooled by their
size; bees have some
serious smarts.
Research shows that
these little geniuses can
recognize human faces,
count up to four, and
even learn to pull
strings to get food. They
can also learn from
watching other bees,
proving that they’ve got
some serious teamwork
skills.

Bee hotels provide a
safe space for solitary
bees to lay their eggs
and can be made from
simple materials like
bamboo, wood, or
even an old tin can.
Bee-utiful colours:
More than meets the
eye
We all know bees as
black and yellow-
striped creatures, but
did you know they come
in a rainbow of colours?
From green to blue, and
even red or purple, bees
are quite the fashion-
forward bunch. With
over 20,000 species of
bees worldwide, there’s
a whole lot of colourful
variety in the bee
kingdom!
Killer bees: Don’t judge
a bee by its name
You’ve probably heard
of the infamous “killer
bees,” but don’t be too
scared – their name is a
bit of an exaggeration.
While they can be more
aggressive than other
bee species,
their sting isn’t any
more lethal than a
regular honeybee’s. In
fact, “killer bees,” or
Africanized honey bees,
are just a hybrid of
African and European
honey bees. They got
their fearsome
reputation mainly
because they’re more
likely to defend their
hive en masse.
But hey, they’re just
protecting their home,
and we can’t really
blame them for that, can
we?
The buzz about honey:
A sweet treat with a
long shelf life
Honey is not just a tasty
natural sweetener; it’s
also a marvel of bee
engineering! Did you
know that honey can
last almost indefinitely?
That’s right;
archaeologists have
found pots of honey in
ancient Egyptian tombs
that are still perfectly
edible today. Bees make
honey by collecting
nectar, then they store it
in their “honey stomach”
and bring it back to the
hive. Once there, they
pass it from bee to bee,
which helps evaporate
water from the nectar.
Finally, they store it in
honeycomb cells and
seal it with beeswax.
Voila! A sweet, golden
treat that stands the
test of time.
Bees and the bro code:
They’ve got our backs
Bees are some of the
best bros we could ask
for. They play a vital
role in pollination, which
means they’re
responsible for helping
plants reproduce.
In fact, bees are
responsible for
pollinating about one-
third of the food we eat!
Fruits, veggies, nuts, and
even some spices – you
name it, bees have had a
hand (or should we say,
wing) in their production.
So next time you’re
munching on an apple or
enjoying a scoop of
almond butter, remember
to thank our buzzing
buddies for their hard
work.
Bee-ing eco-friendly:
Bee hotels and bee
gardens
Want to give a little love
back to our tiny winged
heroes? Consider building
a bee hotel or planting a
bee-friendly garden in
your yard. These tiny
marvels of nature are full
of surprises, and their
importance in our
ecosystem cannot be
overstated.

Can You Really Cry Underwater?
FOOD FOR THOUGHT:
Crying is a natural human response to
a range of emotions, from sadness and
grief to joy and relief. But have you
ever wondered if it's possible to shed
tears while submerged in water? Let's
dive into the science behind this
intriguing question.
Tears and Their Composition
To understand the phenomenon, it's
essential to first grasp the nature of
tears. Human tears are composed of
three layers: an outer oily layer, a
middle watery layer, and an inner
mucous layer. These layers work in
tandem to keep our eyes moist, protect
them from irritants, and ensure clear
vision.
The Act of Crying Underwater
Technically, yes, you can cry
underwater. When you cry, your
lacrimal glands produce tears, which
then flow over the surface of your
eyes. Being underwater doesn't stop
these glands from doing their job.
So, if you were to feel emotional while
submerged, your body would still
produce tears in response. However,
the experience would be different from
crying on land. Since you're surrounded
by water, the tears wouldn't roll down
your face as they typically would.
Instead, they'd mix with the
surrounding water almost immediately.
As a result, it might be challenging to
distinguish between the tears and the
water, making it seem as though you
aren't crying at all.
Practical Implications
While the act of crying is possible
underwater, it's essential to remember
that opening your eyes in certain water
environments, like chlorinated pools or
salty seas, can be uncomfortable. The
presence of chemicals or salt can
irritate the eyes, making them red and
stingy. So, if you find yourself feeling
emotional while swimming or diving, it
might be best to surface before letting
those tears flow.
Can you cry underwater?
Let’s take a look at the
science, emotions, and
whimsical charm behind
this quirky question.

behave beneath the
surface and explore the
extraordinary in the

AN OPEN LETTER TO MEN
Dear Men, We need to have a heart-to-heart about something that’s often brushed under the carpet—your mental
health. This is important. We live in a world that constantly tells men to be strong, to be the pillars of society, and to
carry on regardless of what's going on inside. It's absolutely okay to prioritise your mental and emotional well-being.
It's okay to feel emotions, really feel them, and to express them in healthy ways. You're not less of a man for feeling
sad, anxious, or overwhelmed. Bottling up emotions can lead to a mental health crisis. Share what you're going
through with trusted friends or family, or even professionals. Emotional expression isn't a sign of weakness; it’s a sign
of being human.
When it comes to health check-ups, there's often a reluctance among men to consult medical professionals unless
absolutely necessary. The problem with this approach is that by the time something becomes "absolutely necessary,"
it's often far worse than it could have been if addressed earlier. So please, if you're not feeling well, get checked out.
Prevention is often better than cure, and early detection can make a world of difference.
Burnout is another issue that men, in particular, tend to ignore or downplay. The culture of "hustle" has many men
working endless hours, believing that rest is for the weak. But let me be clear: taking time to rest and recuperate isn’t
laziness; it’s a form of self-care. Rest is essential for mental clarity, emotional balance, and overall well-being. If you're
constantly pushing yourself to the point of exhaustion, you're not doing anyone any favours, least of all yourself. So
when you start feeling worn out, please take a break. Recharge those batteries and return to the world as a
rejuvenated version of yourself.
Now, how about supporting other men? Sometimes it seems like we're all in competition with each other, each trying
to be the "alpha male," to outdo the other in all aspects of life. But imagine a world where men uplift other men, where
you can lend a helping hand or a listening ear without judgment. The strength of your character isn't measured by how
many people you can outperform, but by how many people you can positively impact. You can be that person who
makes a difference in someone's life. Share your experiences, offer advice, or just listen when someone needs to talk.
Your support can help other men open up about their struggles, creating a ripple effect that could change lives.
I know this letter is asking you to go against societal norms. Many of these norms have been ingrained in us since
childhood, making them incredibly difficult to break. However, it's never too late to start making changes. The first
step is acknowledging that it's okay to take care of yourself and to encourage others to do the same. Let's break the
cycle of silence and stigma. This is a collective effort, and every individual contribution counts.
As men, we need to stick together and break down the barriers that have been constructed around our emotional and
mental health. It's a collective responsibility we all share. The way you treat yourself sets the bar for others, and it can
encourage other men to take care of themselves too. So let this letter be a gentle reminder to look out for number one,
and by that, I mean you.
So to you, I say this: be the change you want to see. Make mental and emotional well-being a priority. Encourage your
mates to do the same. And remember, you're not alone in this journey. There’s a community of men who are slowly but
surely changing the narrative. So let's stand together in making mental health a topic that's openly discussed, properly
addressed, and adequately cared for. Together, we can make a difference, and it starts with you.

SO, WHAT'S MOVEMBER?
MOVEMBER IS A MOVEMENT WHERE MEN GROW MUSTACHES DURING NOVEMBER TO RAISE
AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR MEN'S HEALTH ISSUES, PARTICULARLY PROSTATE CANCER, TESTICULAR
CANCER, AND MEN'S MENTAL HEALTH.
The jacaranda trees are in full bloom, braais are getting fired up for the summer season, and a
special kind of magic unfolds—men everywhere start growing moustaches. Well... some of them.
So, what's the buzz about Movember? Well, this whole thing kicked off in Australia back in 2003
but has since taken the world, including Mzansi, by storm. It's not just about growing a cool 'stache;
it's about raising awareness for men's health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and
mental well-being.
The rules? Dead simple. Men—or "Mo Bros" as they are affectionately called—begin November
clean-shaven and then let their moustaches grow freely. Chances are, you are going to be at a braai,
and someone will ask, "Hey, what's with the new moustache?" Bam! The door just swung wide
open for you to chat about men's health. Behind the moustaches is the Movember Foundation.
They've got their act together, having funded over 1,250 men’s health projects worldwide.
Research, treatments, you name it, they're making a real difference. And hey, they’re big on early
detection of health problems, because catching things early can be a game-changer.
Movember isn't just about letting your facial hair do the talking as it also encourages you to get
moving. "Move for Movember" is an awesome sidekick campaign that urges you to walk or run 60
kilometres throughout the month. Why 60, you ask? It’s a tribute to the men we've lost to health
issues. So while you're enjoying the South African sun, you're also doing something that matters.
Next time you're at the local shop, at a braai, or even stuck in traffic and you spot a bloke with a
newly minted moustache, give him a nod. That moustache is more than just a style choice now, it's a
symbol of awareness, unity, and hope for a healthier future for men all over South Africa, and the
world. So, this November, let's celebrate those moustaches and the meaningful message they carry.
Cheers to Movember!

TAKING CARE
OF YOUR MO
If you're feeling adventurous and aim for a more
audacious look, moustache wax will be your go-to for
sculpting those final flourishes.
The Essentials:
For the modern gentleman committed to the fine art of
moustache cultivation, there are some must-haves:
precision barber scissors, high-quality clippers, a well-
crafted fine-toothed comb, an expansive mirror for a full
view, a dependable razor, unwavering hand-eye
coordination, and a will of steel.
Moustache Maintenance:
Consistent shampooing is your friend. Remember,
moustaches are like magnets for all sorts of particles.
Food may be glorious, but it has no business taking up
residence in your 'stache. Exercise caution when you're
feasting on foods with a messy reputation.
Your moustache hair has a robust texture, so regular
conditioning is a godsend. A generous amount of
conditioner worked into your 'stache will yield a softer
touch, which will be appreciated not just by you but by
anyone getting up close and personal.
Don't neglect the skin underneath; it's also part of the
moustache ecosystem. A hot towel face wash is a good
way to hydrate and purify the skin, preventing dryness
and the dreaded itch.
Mastering the Trim:
For the best results, wet your moustache before cutting.
It makes the hairs more manageable, but be cautious—
wet hairs are prone to springing back when dry.
Use your trusty fine-toothed comb to tame the hairs
into a unified direction. It prepares the stage for a
precise cut.
Take your barber scissors and strategically snip at any
stray hairs along the outer edges and bottom line of
your 'stache. A comb can act as your guide, holding
your moustache in position as you make your cuts.
Always err on the side of caution when trimming.
For uniform fluffiness, guide clippers gently over the
body of your moustache.
Lather up and execute a clean shave along the
peripheral edges with your razor.

INTRIGUING MOUSTACHE FACTS
Health Benefits: Some researchers suggest that a moustache could filter out pollen
and dust from the air, potentially serving as a health asset.
The Einstein's Stache: Albert Einstein was not just a towering intellect in physics; he
also maintained a moustache for over 50 years. Imagine the scientific thoughts that
moustache has been privy to!
Record-Breaking Whiskers: The world's longest moustache measures an incredible
4.27 metres and is the pride of Ram Singh Chauhan from Rajastan, India. To keep it in
tip-top condition, he gives it regular massages using mustard and coconut oil.
Beatlemania & Moustaches: Back in 1967, The Beatles included cardboard
moustaches in their iconic album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. A delightful
extra, to say the least!
The Moustache Salary: In a certain district in Madhya Pradesh, India, police officers
receive a bonus for growing a moustache. The prevailing belief is that a moustache
garners more respect. What an intriguing way to incentivise law enforcement!
Beer Reservoir: A one-month-old moustache can hold up to 30ml of liquid, which is
about 10% of a typical glass of beer. A fun yet impractical tidbit!
An Ode to the 'Stache: Salvador Dalí was so infatuated with his moustache that he
dedicated an entire book to it. That's commitment!
Growth Speed: The average moustache grows at a rate of around 0.0356 cm per day,
adding up to approximately 13 to 15 cm per year.
Facial Foliage: On an average man's face, you'll find between 10,000 and 20,000
hairs. A truly populated expanse!
Attractiveness Quotient: According to studies and a good deal of public opinion, men
with moustaches are considered more attractive. No debate there!
The Hollywood Factor: Remember iconic actors like Clark Gable in "Gone With the
Wind" or Tom Selleck in "Magnum, P.I."? Their moustaches were nearly as famous as
they were!

Gentlemen! Welcome to Bromance 101, your one-stop shop
for all things bro-related. Ever wondered how to create the
ultimate bromance? Or maybe you’re already in one, but
you’re looking for ways to level up your bro-tastic bond?
Fear not, fellow bro-seekers, for we have the answers you
seek!
A bromance, in case you’ve been living under a rock (or just
have a knack for avoiding internet slang), is a close,
emotionally supportive, and totally platonic relationship
between two guys. It’s like the ultimate friendship level you
can achieve with another dude. Still not sure? Think of Turk
and J.D. fromScrubs,” or Joey and Chandler fromFriends.
Yep, that’s the gold standard of bromance we’re aiming for!
So, let’s jump right into the wild world of bromances with
some super fun, light-hearted tips to help you create your
very own bro-mazing connection.
Step 1. Embrace the Bro Code
First things first: you’ve got to understand and embrace the
Bro Code. This unofficial yet sacred set of rules governs all
aspects of a bromance. While it may differ from one group of
bros to another, it generally includes some universal
principles like loyalty, trust, and bro-haviour (bro behaviour).
So, get your hands on a copy of Barney Stinson’s The Bro
Code” (yes, from “How I Met Your Mother”) or create your
own set of rules that you and your bro can live by.
Remember, a bromance is built on mutual respect and
understanding.
Step 2. Find Your Bro-mate
Now that you’re fluent in the Bro Code, it’s time to find your
bro-mate! This can be a friend you already have, or you can
venture out and meet new people. Look for someone with
similar interests, a great sense of humour, and a personality
that complements yours. Remember, your bro-mate should
be someone you can be yourself with and have a great time
doing just about anything.
Step 3. Engage in Bro-tivities
Once you’ve found your bro-mate, it’s time to start engaging
in some epic bro-tivities. These are activities that bring you
closer together and strengthen your bromance. Think of
activities like sports, gaming, watching movies, going on road
trips, or just grabbing a beer at your favourite bar. The key
here is to have fun together and make memories that’ll last a
lifetime.

BUILDING A BRO-TASTIC
FRIENDSHIP

Step 4. Bro-munication is Key
A true bromance thrives on open and honest communication.
Make sure you’re both comfortable discussing your feelings,
thoughts, and concerns with each other. Keep in mind that a
bromance is about emotional support and understanding, so
don’t shy away from deeper conversations. Remember, a
heart-to-heart chat over a couple of cold ones can do
wonders for your bro-bond.
Step 5. Celebrate Each Other’s Successes
In a bromance, you’re each other’s biggest cheerleaders.
Whether it’s a promotion at work, a personal milestone, or
just a killer workout at the gym, be there to celebrate and
support your bro. Show genuine happiness for his
achievements, and he’ll do the same for you. It’s this mutual
support system that makes bromances so valuable and
unique.
Step 6. Embrace the Broments
Broments (bro moments) are the memorable and often
hilarious experiences you share with your bro. They can be as
simple as a late-night fast-food run or as epic as a weekend
trip to Vegas. Cherish these moments and don’t be afraid to
reminisce about them together. Creating inside jokes and
sharing memories will only strengthen your bromance.
Step 7. Be Loyal and Trustworthy
Loyalty and trust are the foundation of any strong bromance.
Be there for your bro when he needs you, and make sure he
knows he can count on you no matter what. Keep his secrets,
have his back in sticky situations, and always be honest with
him. A bromance built on loyalty and trust is one that will
stand the test of time.
With these seven steps, you’ll be well on your way to
crafting the ultimate bromance. Remember, the key to a
successful bromance is to keep it fun, supportive, and
genuine. It’s about creating a bond that transcends the
everyday friendships and becomes something truly special.
So, go ahead and start this bro-tastic journey with your newfound knowledge, and before you know it, you’ll be living the
bromance of your dreams. And who knows? Maybe one day, you and your bro will become the next legendary duo, inspiring
future generations of bromantic adventurers.
Now, grab your bro-mate, give each other a fist bump, and get ready to conquer the world, one broment at a time!
Cheers to your epic bromance, gentlemen!

Of course! But sometimes, taking a
break from certain activities can offer a
new perspective, even if it leaves you
squirming in your seat. Like a
boerewors at a vegan barbeque, it
might seem out of place, but it provides
valuable insight into your own
behaviour and desires.
The challenge has even evolved over
the years. At its inception, No Nut
November was a bit like a secret
society. An underground movement, if
you will. You'd get an awkward wink
from someone, or perhaps a discreet
fist bump, and you'd instantly know
they were a fellow participant. But
nowadays, the event has exploded into
mainstream culture, being discussed
on podcasts, television, and even in
family gatherings. Imagine that,
discussing No Nut November with your
Uncle Piet who's chomping away on his
biltong. Awkward, right?
If you're keen to give No Nut November
a whirl, there are no strict entry
requirements.
All you need is the willpower of a lion
stalking its prey and the fortitude to
match. You don't need to fill out any
application forms or attend a support
group meeting. And rest assured, there
are no fees—aside from the cost to your
ego if you don't make it all the way
through.
Be warned, though: it's not a challenge
for the faint-hearted. Much like climbing
Table Mountain in flip-flops, it's doable
but requires a fair bit of preparation and
mental fortitude. You'll be bombarded
by triggers at every turn—billboards,
television adverts, heck, even
supermarket aisles. At times, the
temptation will be as difficult to resist as
a tray of freshly baked koeksisters.
If you decide to take the plunge, just
remember: keep your sense of humour
handy, as you'll definitely need it. And
don't worry if you don't make it all the
way through. Like any challenge, it's not
about the end result; it's about the
journey. So, go ahead and give it a shot
—or rather, refrain from doing so.

Paganism (from classical Latinpāgānus “rural”, “rustic”, later “civilian”) is a term first used in the
fourth century by early Christians for people in the Roman Empire who practiced polytheism or
ethnic religions other than Judaism. In the time of the Roman empire, individuals fell into the
pagan class either because they were increasingly rural and provincial relative to the Christian
population, or because they were not milites Christi (soldiers of Christ).
During and after the Middle Ages, the term paganism was applied to any non-Christian religion,
and the term presumed a belief in false god(s). n the 19th century, paganism was adopted as a
self-descriptor by members of various artistic groups inspired by the ancient world. In the 20th
century, it came to be applied as a self-descriptor by practitioners of Modern Paganism, Neopagan
movements, and Polytheistic reconstructionists. Modern pagan traditions often incorporate beliefs
or practices, such as nature worship, that are different from those in the largest world religions.
Paganism:
What Is A Pagan?
Learn Something New
What Is A Pagan? A Pagan is a person who believes that everything has a soul or spirit. Rivers,
animals, rocks, trees, and land are all filled with their own unique spirits for people who are
Pagans. Traditionally, Christians believe that only humans have souls or spirits.
Many environmentally conscious Christians today share the belief with Pagans that all forms of
life have a soul. Pagans see the divine spirit in all life, as do some members of other religions.
Is There More Than One Pagan Religion? There are hundreds of different Pagan Religions.
Some of the best-known Pagan religions are Buddhism, Shintoism, Native American Religions,
Hinduism, Taoism, Wicca, Druidism, Asatru, Shamanism, Neo-Paganism and Eclectic Paganism.
SOMETHING MAGAZINE
Are Pagans Devil Worshippers? No, Pagans do not
worship the Devil or Satan. Pagans do not believe in the
Devil, he is part of the Judeo-Christian Religions and their
mythology.
Are Pagans Witches? Some Pagans are Witches, some
are not. Many Pagan groups do not practice Witchcraft.
Wiccans are a type of Pagan Witches, there are also
Dianic Witches, Green Witches, and other types of Pagan
Witches. There are also Christian Witches, many of these
people are practising Christian, but also practice
Witchcraft. You also get Santeria. A South American
religion that is a blend of VooDoo, Witchcraft and
Christianity.
What Do I Need To Be a Pagan? A love of Nature, and a
commitment to live in harmony with the Earth and Her
creatures. You need to feel in your heart that it is where
your own spirituality is leading you. Paganism is for
Pagans, only you know if you are a Pagan in your heart.
What is a Pagan Ritual? A Religious or Pagan Ritual is
anything that focuses your spiritual energy. A church
service is a ritual, and so is a wedding, or a funeral, or a
Hopi Sun Dance. Humans have created rituals since the
beginning of time. Ritual is the way humans express their
connection with divinity and each other.
There are many kinds of Pagan Ritual, personal rituals you
do by yourself, full moon rituals, by yourself or with a
group. There are blessing rituals for a new home, or for
children, or for healing, or for cleansing. There are
protection rituals, and banishing rituals, to name a few.
Your Grandmother may have placed a horseshoe over the
door, this is a popular form of simple protection ritual that
is rooted in Pagan tradition. Or throwing salt over your
shoulder if it is spilled, so as not to attract bad luck.
For Wiccans and Neo-Pagans, there are some basic Ritual
Traditions that you may have heard about. Many Pagan
Rituals begin by honouring the Earth and the 4 directions,
as well as the elements the directions represent, Air, Fire,
Water and Earth. A circle is cast and blessed with water,
smoke, salt and light in honour of these elements. Rituals
often include singing, chanting, dancing, drumming, poetry
and hymns to the Goddess or Gods. Some Rituals are very
complex and are almost like a play, other rituals are very
simple and flow with the energy of the group.
Celebrate the cycles of
the moon, the bounty of
the harvest, and the
whispers of the wind, for in
Paganism, we find a
sacred connection to the
Earth and its endless
rhythms.

Do Pagans Believe In Jesus? Some do and some do not. Many Pagans believe in a wide variety of
higher beings. Jesus is one of these beings for some Pagans. Some believe he was a great spiritual
teacher, but not a god. Some have no feelings about him at all.
Who Is The Pagan God? There is no single Pagan God. Some Pagan faiths, like Hinduism and Eclectic
Paganism, have many Gods and Goddesses. Some Pagan Traditions like Taoism have no Gods or
Goddesses. Some popular deities with contemporary American Pagans are Artemis-Diana, Inanna, the
GreenMan, Isis, Brigid, Rhiannon, Apollo, Kore, and Demeter.
What Is a Goddess? The first deities humans worshipped were Goddesses. A Goddess is the female
creative and life-giving force of the Universe and much more.
Do Pagans Pray? Yes, many Pagans pray and many connect with the divine in other ways. Many
meditate as a form of prayer, others drum as a form of prayer, and others chant, sing or dance. Some
dedicate each task they perform during the day, to the Goddess. Throughout human history, people
have spoken to their Gods or Goddesses through many different kinds ofprayer”.
When a Muslim prays, they bow toward Mecca, when a Christian prays they cross themselves, when a
Buddhist prays they chant or make a sand mandala, when a Pagan prays, they may be chanting, doing
rituals, hugging a tree or picking up litter on a beach, as a way of connecting with their Goddesses or
Gods.
How Do You Get Married If You Are A Pagan? Pagans, go through what is called a handfasting.
Handfasting is the binding of hands, to create a sacred bond. The cords used are traditionally coloured
to the wedding couple’s choice, each colour symbolizing something different; for instance red for will,
strength, courage and fertility, orange for encouragement, attraction and kindness, and blue for
patience, understanding, health and loyalty. The second notable event within a Pagan wedding
ceremony is the jumping of the besom broom. This action represents the sexual union between the now
married couple, and also the threshold they are about to cross.
Do Pagans Celebrate Sabbath Days? Yes they do, they follow the wheel of the year. The Wheel of the
Year is a Pagan metaphor and calendar for the cycle of the seasons. It consists of eight festivals, known
as sabbats, spaced at approximately even intervals throughout the year. In many forms of Paganism, the
passing of time is seen as cyclical and is represented by a circle or wheel. The progression of birth, life,
decline, and death, as experienced in human lives, is echoed in the progression of the seasons. Many
Pagans also see this cycle as echoing the life, death, and rebirth of the God and the fertility of the
Goddess. As the Wheel originates in the Northern Hemisphere, in the Southern Hemisphere most
Pagans advance these dates six months so as to coincide with the natural seasons as they occur in their
local climates. For instance, a South African Pagan may celebrate Beltane on the 1st of November,
when a Canadian Pagan is celebrating Samhain.

On a clear, moonlit night, the silver glow of the full moon illuminated the countryside, setting the
stage for a heartwarming lesson between a father wolf and his young pup. The curious pup, gazing
up at the sky with wide eyes, inquired, Daddy, why do we howl at the moon? Pondering his
response, the father wolf spoke with calm wisdom. We howl at the moon to pay respects to the
ball we will never fetch,he replied, his voice echoing with generations of canine understanding.
Confusion washed over the puppys face as he tilted his head.
What do you mean, Daddy? I dont understand.
With a loving smile, the father wolf ruffled his pups fur and began to explain. You see, son, life is
full of things we want but can never have. It might be a ball thats just out of reach or a dream that
seems impossible to grasp. But just because we cant have it doesnt mean we cant acknowledge
it and pay our respects.
Pondering his fathers words, the pup looked up at the moon once more and let out a soft,
heartfelt howl. He joined his pack in honouring the unattainable, and at that moment, he felt a
profound connection with his father and their canine family.
With pride in his eyes, the father wolf knew that he had imparted a valuable life lesson to his little
one. From that night on, the pup howled at the moon with a newfound understanding and a heart
full of love. They might never fetch the moon, but they would always pay their respects to it.
As the night progressed, the father and pup continued their heart-to-heart under the twinkling
stars. They discussed other unattainable dreams and goals, but also how to appreciate and respect
them. The father wolf shared tales of his own struggles and the lessons he learned on
appreciating the journey, even when the destination seemed unreachable.
The pup listened intently, absorbing the wisdom passed down from his father. He began to see life
as more than just a series of ball-fetching games there were bigger dreams and ambitions, things
that might be unattainable but were still worth striving for.
As the night drew to a close and the pack snuggled in for the night, the pup felt a deep sense of
gratitude for the bond he shared with his father. He knew that with his fathers guidance and
wisdom, he would be well-equipped to navigate the twists and turns of life.
As the pack dozed off to sleep, the young pup felt a sense of contentment. He knew he had much
to learn, but with his father by his side, he was ready for the journey ahead. Closing his eyes and
releasing a final, heartfelt howl at the moon, he knew he would always pay his respects to the
unattainable, for it was all part of the beautiful journey that is life.

Jess, congratulations on the release of your new children’s book, Arnold the Not Dinosaur!
Can you share with us the inspiration behind the story and its main character?
“Thank you so much! I am so incredibly excited about this book – I actually wrote the first draft of
it when I was twelve years old based on an inside joke with one of my best friends. My dad had
recently bought me a green dinosaur stuffed toy that my friend and I had been trying to name all
day. We finally decided on the name Arnold – although he was a dinosaur toy, to begin with, he
didn’t look particularly dinosaur-y to us at that particular moment and thus Arnold the Not
Dinosaur was born. I wanted to tell a story about identity and self-discovery, both of which have
been very important in my own life, and so Arnold’s awkwardness and curiosity are probably a
reflection of mine.”
From Poetry to Prehistoric Pals, Jess Robus Releases Second Book, Arnold the Not Dinosaur
INTERVIEW:
SOMETHING MAGAZINE
WWW.THESOMETHINGGUY.CO.ZA
INTERVIEW FEATURE
Once upon a time, a green galumphing dinosaur named Arnold faced a dilemma. He grappled with issues of personal
identity and the pressure to conform in a world insisting he be something other than what he truly was.
This enchanting tale, crafted by 16-year-old author Jess Robus,
is the heart of the charming and thought-provoking children’s book, Arnold the Not Dinosaur.
Arnold the Not Dinosaur is not only a beautiful tale but also an inclusive one.
The book uses a dyslexic-friendly font, making it easier for those battling dyslexia to enjoy.
Nikki Bush, an award-winning speaker and five-time best-selling author, praised the book for its celebration of
uniqueness and difference, calling it a “great conversation starter and a contribution to creating a kinder world.”
39
I hope that they learn the
value of practising kindness
and self-acceptance"
Before we dive too deep into this interview, who
exactly is Jess Robus? What makes you, YOU?
“That’s a big question! I am a complete word nerd –
I love reading (particularly fantasy), writing poetry,
songs, stories, and scripts, and I play a killer game
of bananagram! I am also very passionate about
music and the performing arts – I looooove live
theatre and hope to one day write songs for
professional musicals. I like to think that what
makes me ‘me’, though, is my ability to be kind and
look for the good in people. I believe in the
importance of kindness in all circumstances – in the
words of the Twelfth Doctor from one of my all-
time favourite shows, Doctor Who, “Always try to
be nice but never fail to be kind.”
(Whovian insider joke: BTW Jess, Don’t be
Lasagna… and RUN!)
Arnold the Not Dinosaur deals with themes like
personal identity, belonging, and mental health.
Why do you think it’s important to address these
topics with younger children?
“Mental health and identity don’t have an age limit.
Young children deal with these complicated issues
in the family unit, in the classroom, and on the
playground, and oftentimes lack the vocabulary to
describe their feelings and struggles. If children can
describe what they are feeling and why and
increase their emotional intelligence and
vocabulary then they will be able to interact more
positively with one another and express
themselves more effectively, leading to a better
overall mental state. I also think that it is important
to start having these conversations with children at
an early age to build up a baseline of
understanding and empathy which may be built
upon in later life.”
Your first book, a Few Slivers of Light, was an
anthology of poetry that focused on your
experiences with anxiety and depression. How
did writing that book influence your approach to
creating Arnold the Not Dinosaur?
“Publishing a Few Slivers of Light was a nerve-
wracking experience at first – I was scared that
people wouldn’t enjoy my poetry and even more so
that they wouldn’t connect with the deeper
underlying themes. Putting out a book full of my
innermost thoughts and feelings was an
intimidating prospect – but then the book came out
and I was astounded by people’s reactions to it.
Not only did they like the writing but they felt that
their own mental health struggles were being
heard and validated and they were encouraged to
open conversations around mental health, which
was wonderfully encouraging to see. With Arnold,
I wanted to continue opening those important
conversations but in a younger demographic – this
book is definitely lighter both in tone and actual
design, but it deals with similar issues to the other
book. After seeing teens reacting positively to my
first book, I wanted to create a story for younger
kids to start addressing mental health in a creative,
gentle way.”
Holly Evers illustrated your book beautifully. Can
you tell us more about your collaboration with
her and how her illustrations complement your
story?
“Holly is just the best! She illustrated Leigh
Bowen’s CamleyFluffs series and did an absolutely
incredible job at bringing Leigh’s characters to life.
We met through Leigh and just really hit it off –
she’s so creative and smart and as passionate
about Arnold as I am. Right from the start she and I
were on the same page about how Arnold and his
world should look. She included so many
wonderful details in her illustrations and did such a
good job at drawing Arnold as all of the different
animals he thinks that he may be – my favourite is
definitely Arnold as a penguin! She also drew my
little sister as a character in the book which was
very special to see.”

You wrote this book when you were just 12
years old. How has your perspective changed
since then, and what do you think your
younger self would say about the final
product?
“At the time of writing, I didn’t realise just how
much of myself I had unknowingly put into
Arnold. I have always struggled with fitting in
and feeling isolated from my peers, as if they
expected me to be someone that I wasn’t and
judged me for having different interests. Over
the years I have learned that being different isn’t
bad – it’s wonderful! – and have found an
incredible group of friends who love and
support me for who I am. I think that twelve-
year-old Jess would be extremely happy with
Arnold – I know sixteen-year-old Jess is! – and
honestly shocked that it is an actual, illustrated
and published book instead of just a Word
document on her mom’s computer. I like to think
that she would like it – I can see now more than
ever that it is a love letter to her and all kids like
her who feel like the world doesn’t accept them
for who they truly are.”
Arnold the Not Dinosaur is in a Dyslexic-
friendly font. Why was it important for you to
make this choice, and how do you think it will
help readers?
“Holly first suggested the idea of using a
Dyslexic-friendly font for this book and I loved
it. Holly herself is Dyslexic and both of us are
passionate about accessibility. It was important
for me to make this book as accessible as
possible for readers who struggle with Dyslexia
– the core message of Arnold’s story is one of
kindness and acceptance and I wanted that to
extend to the book’s presentation.
Someday I would love to record an audiobook
version of Arnold and my poetry book to make
them more accessible for people who struggle
with their vision, but for now, the book’s font is a
step towards accessibility that I feel very
strongly about.”
In addition to being an author, you’re also a
mental health advocate, poet, and songwriter.
How do these different creative outlets
complement one another in your life?
“I love having different outlets to express
different emotions. Generally, when I’m sad I
write poetry, when I’m contemplative I write
songs, and once I’ve finished feeling my feelings
and expressing them through writing I tell
people about them through my advocacy.
Writing is tied with creating and playing music
as my favourite pastime – both activities help
me to process feelings that I don’t necessarily
understand before I start writing. In a nutshell,
writing helps me to understand myself and
through expressing these emotions I try to
encourage and comfort others who may be
feeling the same.”
Lastly, what would your ‘words of wisdom’ be
to a young boy or girl who might feel like they
would also want to start writing their own
stories but might lack the confidence to do it?
“The best advice that I could give to a young
writer is this: don’t stop! I think it was Neil
Gaiman who said that the first draft of a piece of
writing is for the writer, the second draft is for
the editor, and the final draft is for the reader.
Your writing may not be perfect or even seem
particularly good when you first start off but it is
a hundred times better than leaving a blank
page. Keep writing. Your words and stories are
important and valuable and the world needs to
hear them. Keep writing.”

JACARANDA
TREES
C A P T I V A T E D B Y P U R P L E :
November in Pretoria is
like stepping into a fairy
tale—a fairy tale painted
in shades of royal purple.
All thanks to the
Jacaranda trees that burst
into bloom, filling the city
with a sense of wonder.
Originally from South
America, Jacaranda trees
found a new home in
Pretoria in the 1800s.
Today, over 50,000 of
these trees dot the city,
each November
transforming it into a
purple paradise.
This annual bloom isn't
just pretty to look at; it
also warms the hearts of
locals and tourists alike.
It marks the onset of
holidays and gatherings,
creating a communal
experience that binds
people together.
Yet the Jacaranda tree is
not without controversy.
Environmentalists note
that it's not native and
can outcompete local
flora.
However, for most
Pretorians, the emotional
connection to these trees
outweighs such concerns.
Come November, cafes
and eateries join in,
offering purple-themed
treats. And let's not
forget the belief among
university students that a
falling Jacaranda blossom
brings good luck during
exams—a touch of
folklore that adds an
extra dash of magic to
this time of year.
As the season closes and
the last petals fall, we
say a bittersweet
farewell. Yet, we also
look forward to next
November, knowing the
Jacaranda trees will once
again fill our lives with
colour, warmth, and joy.

BRONWEN

THE ART OF PUBLICITY
In today's fast-paced digital world, the work of people like Bronwen Hirshowitz is more important than ever.
She's the founder of B Sharp Entertainment, a company that helps to promote a wide range of talents in
entertainment. With experience in theatre, music, radio, and digital media, Bronwen has a well-rounded view of
what entertainment is all about and certainly knows how to make it fun and exciting.
She's involved in big shows like the 'Peter Pan' Pantomime by Janice Honeyman, but she also supports new
artists who are just starting out. She loves many forms of entertainment and is excited about where things are
going in the future. In our interview, Bronwen talks about her own experiences, gives us some tips on how to
promote a show or artist, and shares her thoughts on the future of entertainment. So, if you're interested in the
entertainment industry, this is an interview you won't want to miss.

I don't want to give to much away as there are many
surprises in the show and you'll have to buy your ticket
to experience this spectacular musical.”
In your role as a publicist, what do you reckon are
the essentials for effectively getting the word out
about a show or an artist?
“I won't give away too many PR secrets, but your
online presence is key and that is why it is important to
firstly have a publicist, to help increase your visibility
online and also to mainstream media.”
With everything moving towards digital and more
people showcasing their talents online, where do you
see the future of entertainment heading?
“There will always be entertainment online - there is a
space and a place for that. However, humans still need
connection and that is why traditional entertainment,
like theatre, live concerts, etc will always be around.
As mentioned before - there is nothing greater than
watching a performer live on stage - nothing can
duplicate the emotion and the intensity of that
moment. 'Traditional' entertainment will never
disappear, in my opinion.”
Bronwen, what sparked the birth of B Sharp
Entertainment? What drove you to champion the
promotion of such diverse entertainment forms?
“I have been involved in the entertainment industry from
a very young age; as a performer firstly and since then,
wearing various hats. When I started working in radio,
over ten years ago, I noticed that the arts received very
little coverage in mainstream media - this was just before
the social media explosion. I wanted to create a platform
where established, and especially up-and-coming
performers, musicians, artists, etc, could showcase their
work. I was always a Barney Simon fan (the DJ back in
the days of 5 FM and his late-night radio show), and
loved how he supported local musicians. I wanted B
Sharp Entertainment to be that type of platform for
musicians, performers, actors, artists, everyone. It has
been so incredible to watch new talent grow and I love
being witness to that journey.”
You've got such a rich background, from theatre and
music to radio and digital media. How have these
experiences influenced your view on the entertainment
scene?
“I am very lucky that I grew up in a house filled with
music and culture. My parents would take us to watch
concerts, theatre shows, ballet, etc... The performing arts
are so engrained in me. Entertainment is so wide and
varies; it evolves and so I appreciate and understand that
there is a place for all forms of entertainment, like on
social media. People are so incredibly creative and I am
blown away by how much talent there is around the
world. As long as it is entertaining and educational and
doesn't harm anyone, I am all for it. In saying that,
however, I still think nothing beats going to a live concert
or musical or theatre show.”
You're sprinkling your magic on Janice Honeyman's
'Peter Pan' Pantomime. Can you share some insights
about the production and what the audience can
expect?
“That's very kind, but it is Janice Honeyman who sprinkles
her magic on South Africans, along with an incredibly
talented cast and creative team. This year's pantomime is
going to take audiences on a trip to Neverland with
beautiful sets, costumes and fun entertainment. We have
many new Panto faces in the cast and it has been such
fun working with such new energy. Anyone who has seen
a Janice Honeyman Panto, knows that it is fun, funny,
magical, and the best way to escape life and go on a
journey that is unforgettable - with puns, tongue twisters,
and pure joy. I am so fortunate to be a part of this
production - I pinch myself every year. The costumes and
sets are awe-inspiring and it is the best way to wind
down the year.

She is trying to transform people's lives by teaching social-
emotional skills to children, which long term, will assist
them as adults. This is definitely something that everyone
should support - there is a huge gap in emotional
development, which adults lack too and with enough
funding, she could film her series which would help all
children from all backgrounds.”
Your favourite beverage? “I have discovered vegan hot
chocolate at a certain supermarket. Delicious.”
What motivates you in life?
“Everything around me motivates me. I try to live mindfully
and so try to notice the small miracles and gems that are
presented to me, which keep me motivated; it could be the
kind words of encouragement from someone, the purr of
my cats, or a great song.”
Everyone has a personal mantra or piece of advice they
live by. What's yours, and how has it guided you
throughout your career and personal life?
“It changes depending on the situation but the simple
mantra of 'This Too Shall Pass' is so meaningful to me
because it reminds me that even in dark times, the darkness
will pass, nothing lasts. It also reminds me to be in the
moment and to enjoy the moment, because that too is
fleeting. I try to be in each moment and to live and enjoy
each moment and experience. Sometimes we forget that.
This quote is one of my favourites too - in the words of John
Lennon "Everything will be okay in the end, and if it's not
okay, it's not the end."
Lastly, who is Bronwen Hirshowitz in your own words?
“Bronwen is a little bit of everything all rolled into one
(guess the 90s song). She is passionate, caring,
unassuming, cat crazy and loves her two nephews deeply.”
Away from the spotlight, what kind of entertainment
draws you in? Do you have any top picks in shows,
movies, artists, or other genres?
“I love so much, but to answer your question (and I hope I
am not too vague), I love watching bands live and love
going to concerts. Rock music is my choice of music
usually. I enjoy staying at home and watching
TV/streaming services as well. I enjoy most genres, but
can't watch Horror. I enjoy music documentaries, comedy,
anything good. I love musical theatre and most theatre
and dance.”
Bit of a fun one if you could harness a superpower for
a day, which would you go for? And how would you put
it to use straight away?
“I love Mystique's power (from X-Men) - transforming into
different people. That would be so much fun and
especially on a bad hair day. haha. Maybe I would
transform into the people who approve funding for the
arts and just sign 'Approved' for everything. I would love
to have that power for more than one day - is that an
option? Please.”
If you could hop into a time machine and experience any
moment in history for a day, where and when would you
choose?
“A day wouldn't be enough - there are so many moments.
Perhaps going to Woodstock would be fun; watching Jimi
Hendrix and Janice Joplin live... Watching The Beatles'
final rooftop performance on Apple Studios in 1969 - that
could be an incredible moment in history.”
You must meet so many emerging talents in your line of
work. Are there any fresh faces or shows that have
piqued your interest lately that we should watch out
for?
“This is also why I love working on the annual panto at
Joburg Theatre, because there is always fresh, new talent
in the cast, and this year we have an incredibly impressive
cast of performers in Peter Pan. I get to watch these actors
start their careers on a huge stage, in a huge musical and
then grow as performers. It is so thrilling to witness this.
There is so much, but in a nutshell, for me, there have
been so many female-headed shows these last few
months at the Pieter Toerien Theatre, and those have been
exciting to watch. I also love the fringe shows that POP
Art produces - The Agents was a delight. Theatre on the
Square has showcased new talent like Serena Steinhauer
and Daniel Anderson, whose careers are going to soar.
Greg Homann has brought new, original productions to
The Market Theatre as the new Artistic Director, and I am
curious to see what he does next year.
A highlight this year has been working with Bizzy Hands
Puppet Company, headed by Michelle Botha.

“This is such a hard question to ask someone who basically
considers music an unofficial love language! Brain buffered
for a moment there, from my most recently overplayed
songs it would be Pappa Probleme by Tasché.”
With a career spanning acting, modelling, and influencing, Diaan is so much more than just that. He's a force of
nature who's never shied away from the ups and downs life has thrown his way, becoming a beacon of resilience
and authenticity. From navigating personal transformations to exploring the ever-evolving world of content
creation, our interview covers it all. From some very silly questions to some very serious answers. Take a look into
who he is all about this quick conversation feature.
What's that one jam you've got on full blast, belting
out every lyric?
Alright, picture two courses on offer: 'Galactic
Languages with Aliens' and 'Dance Mastery 101.'
Which wild ride are you hopping on?
“Dance Mastery 101 definitely because I've never felt really
comfortable with my dancing skills I would not mind upping
that skill whereby my skill to learn language is much more
advanced.”
If you were magically transformed into a sandwich,
what delicious combo would you be?
“If I were magically transformed into a sandwich, I would be
a mouthwatering combo of... chunky cottage cheese with
slices of cucumber, tomato, parma ham and a thin slice of
halloumi cheese. It's so good!”
They call you an actor, artist, Influencer or even just
sunshine! But come on, what's one thing you're
hilariously bad at?
“As I mentioned before my dancing skills ain't something I
can write home to about and it has been very
entertaining/cringe-worthy to rewatch the videos where I
thought I was killing it only to be humbled very fast. lol I
always manage to think that I'm doing okay until I become
too self-conscious and try to see what everyone else is
doing to not stand out or look ridiculous.”
In the glitzy world of influencing and content
creation, how do you keep it real? How do you stay
grounded and authentic, especially when those
tempting brand deals come knocking?
“In the glitzy world of influencing and content creation, it
first comes down to whether I have relevance and the
needed experience/knowledge regarding the said
product/service to be able to create and make content for
the deal, then the next thing I look at is the creative freedom
I am given or allowed to create by that aligns with my style
and voice, scripted content for me loses so much
authenticity and people immediately pick up if it's a copy
and paste post. I also look to see if the brand actually
reposts or acknowledges the influencers they use on their
own page or do they just utilize the reach and exposure
from the influencers with no credit from their side. Last
would be the agreement of the collaboration/deal and
whether the agreement would be a paid partnership per
post or a product-based partnership.
Keeping it real regarding my followers, I always go back
and reverse the roles, as if I am the follower engaging on a
content creator/influencer page or post, I have so much
more appreciation when I receive feedback and interaction
on profiles and pages I follow that are influencers and
content creators themselves and it shows that they value
input. It is hard sometimes but I do try to acknowledge,
reply and get to all the engagement on my own posts and I
know it can get overwhelming, it might not always be
immediate but I do in time try to get back to everyone.
In a nutshell, for me very important to stay true to yourself
and your values & and beliefs. I keep it real by always being
authentic and genuine in my content (I always try to stay as
close to that as I can), When those tempting brands and
deals come across my path, I try to make sure I only only
collab with brands that align with my beliefs and that I
actually love and use/would use myself.
It's not always easy but it is important to stay grounded and
true to who you are.”

With the world of content creation changing faster
than we can type, and AI tools popping up
everywhere, where do you reckon the future of
content creation is headed?
“With the world of content creation evolving at lightning
speed and Al tools becoming more prevalent, I reckon the
future of content creation will be a fascinating blend of
creativity and technology. AI tools have definitely changed
the game of social media and content but there is only so
much that can be created/generated by AI until it loses that
specific element or style that is like a signature mark for
every creator and artist. I stand by the use of these tools that
can be an all-in-one solution to help creators who don't
have access to all the tools and software that can be pricey
to use but it shouldn't take away from the artist and creators
who put in hours/days and weeks of
creating/editing/designing and crafting their content to their
desired outcome. Algorithms aiding in creativity and
designing are one thing but they can never truly replace
creativity and the emotion behind it. So I guess we'll see
even more innovative ways to engage and captivate
audiences, like immersive virtual reality experiences and
personalised interactive content.”
Who's on your wall of fame? Who are those
legends, past and present, that inspire you?
“This is a tricky one but growing up and still today I don't
really have significant role models or figures I look up to. I
grew up seeing and experiencing people and situations who
I don't want to turn into or end up like and it sounds a bit
corny but my motivation and inspiration come from the drive
and goal to eventually become and grow into the person
that my younger self would've needed when nobody else
was there at that time.”
What's that spark, that zing, that gets you bouncing
out of bed, ready to seize the day?
“The spark that gets me bouncing out of bed, ready to seize
the day, is the excitement of new possibilities and the joy of
connecting with like-minded people. The thrill of my never-
ending inquisitive nature that leads to learning and creating
something new every day, the hope of making a positive
impact even if it is just a small impact because we know that
a drop no matter how small will create a ripple effect.”

“In 100 years, I hope that the world remembers Diaan as
someone who did not bow to the willpower of
unquestioned authority, as the person who embodied
everything that conformity is not and who encouraged
individuality and doing the right thing even when nobody
else was doing it, even if it means standing alone in the
truth for a while until others caught up. I want to be
remembered as the person who made people ask questions
that were silenced by the mass of society, the questions
that made people gain insight and awareness of
themselves. I want to be remembered as the person who
did not allow himself to be silenced by the ignorance and
prejudice of others, and who inspired other people to live
their truth and to embrace their authentic selves. The story
of how resilience is a great feat of courage but not
something that should ever be required especially from
children and to be kind and to start making a difference in
the world, we have to start with ourselves.”
Fast forward 100 years. How do you want the
world to remember Diaan? What's the story you
want them to tell?
Imagine a world with no limits: endless time,
resources, and all the support you could dream of.
What grand, epic adventure or dream are you diving
into?
“In a world with no limits, endless time, resources, and all
the support I could dream of, I would dive into the grand
adventure of becoming an influential entrepreneur, Writer &
mentor. I would start my own business and brand to create
innovative products or services, I would use my reach and
platforms to make a positive impact on the world. I'd want
to share and learn from as many people and different
perspectives as I could and allow my inquisitiveness to be
the drive to connect with people, cultures and experiences
from all corners of the world. It would be an epic journey of
growth, success, and leaving a lasting legacy!”
Alright, rewind a year! How do you think you've
grown or transformed since then?
“Looking back a year, I've definitely grown in terms of my
knowledge and experiences. It's been a journey of learning
and deep self-discovery, pain and heartache. It's always
such a big debate in my head sometimes; the question of
how much a person must be hurting or have gone through
to turn that anger and pain towards another person?
Because for me every time I experience those emotions
through other people and find myself being the target for
their outlet, the initial thought is to lash back, but I'm
learning to become less reactive & very vocally make the
people around me aware that this is a boundary I'm putting
in place, to pause and wait for the emotional reactive side to
dissipate so I can respond and not react, and from their
POV, if I see they are being highly reactive I won't engage
until they are ready to engage in a conversation that is
responsive and not reactive.”
Diaan, What's the most unexpected plot twist life has thrown your way?
“So, back in 2020, when the whole world went into lockdown, I started going through this big personal and
spiritual transformation. It was like waking up in a different realm, realising stuff about myself that I'd never
considered before, dealing with as well as healing from things from my past that I was never really ready to
face. It was incredibly isolating, but also incredibly eye-opening. I didn’t realise how much of this journey
would be having to peel of different layers of yourself that no longer serve you and having to sit with the
unhealed parts of yourself while working through those exact unprocessed emotions and wounds.
Fast forward to just after my 25th birthday in 2021, I remember saying I’ve reached my quarter-life crisis but
that’s all good because my insurance will now start going down as I get older… and suddenly life threw me a
curveball I never anticipated. I was driving home from Centurion to Johannesburg, when this loud bang hit,
like a gunshot sound. My car started to lose control, and I had to think on my feet and my body instantly
reacted. I knew i had to get to safety, focused on reducing the speed, and i attempted to swerve towards the
yellow lane, aiming to stop the car and regain control.
I did manage to stop, but what happened next was a tragedy that's hard to put into words for me. A person
walking in the yellow lane was sadly struck and didn't survive the accident. It was an awful accident, and I
can't emphasise that enough. That day has stuck with me in a way I can't forget. It was like an emotional
tsunami washed over me, and for a while, I felt stuck in every sense. Physically, emotionally and mentally.
But it also made me rethink my priorities and how I want to live my life moving forward. Since then, I've been
focusing on taking care of my mental and spiritual well-being. I've also been advocating for open discussions
about life's challenges and encouraging everyone to speak up when they're ready. It makes a world of
difference to share your story, and you never know who it might help.

Undeniably one of the central recurring figures of the acclaimed series All
Hail King Julien’, Mortdecai, or Mort as he is fondly known, has etched a
special place in viewers’ hearts. His character was initially introduced in the
notable Madagascarfilm franchise and later made significant appearances
in The Penguins of Madagascar’. Mort is celebrated for his unique
squishiness and immense likeability. Donning an ostensibly innocent charm
packed with an irresistible dose of cuteness, he is a character whose
prominence has steadily grown over the years.
However, beneath the surface of this affable character lies a trove of
undisclosed facts that may very well astonish you. With a firm resolve, I’m
here to disclose the unvarnished truth about Mort and his real identity. Brace
yourselves, mates, as your perception of Mort might take a drastic shift post
this revelation; you may find your fondness for him increasing manifold, or,
quite contrarily, your liking for him might experience a significant dip.
Firstly, let’s delve into his species: Mort is a Goodman’s Mouse Lemur.
Interestingly though, he’s only 40% mouse lemur. Mort has nonchalantly
mentioned in passing that his father was a bear, and his DNA is an eccentric
cocktail of several unrelated species, including traces of sawdust and wood
chips. His genetic makeup also reveals traces of starfish DNA, which explains
his gills and his remarkable ability to regenerate his head. But the surprises
don’t end here, folks. Mort also has some spider DNA, which gives him the
incredible ability to spin webs.
Known and loved by countless fans worldwide, Mort’s adorability often overshadows the fact that he is actually a complex older gentleman
with a rich, and at times tumultuous, history. So, hold tight as we plunge deeper into Mort’s intriguing backstory. I implore you to remain open-
minded throughout this exploration. In the spin-off series All Hail King Julien: Exiled”, it is revealed that Mort hails from a near-immortal species
that possesses the ability to absorb the life force of other ‘Morts’. This peculiar ability endows them with multiple personalities.
This intriguing power has given rise to ‘Smart Mort’, an alter ego and a version of Mort from a different multiverse where he is a genius. Mort has
also absorbed the life force of his own grandmother, who now resides within his consciousness.
One of Mort’s most memorable quotes that has become a running gag in the series is FEEEEET!” which alludes to his unusual fascination with
feet. Additionally, Mort’s religious affiliation is depicted as Jewish. A notable flashback reveals a young Mort receiving Hanukkah gifts from his
grandfather, suggesting a traditional Jewish upbringing.
Mort also identifies as non-binary, further accentuating the complexity of his character. He boasts a physical peculiarity that allows him to rotate
his head 180 degrees anticlockwise.
RUINING YOUR
CHILDHOOD: LET’S
DISCUSS MORT
Mort is a beloved little character,
known by many. With his massive
fan base, many would die for this
little guy… even though in reality
he is a very intricate older
gentleman with a heavy past. So
bear with me here, I am going to
dive straight into this with you!
Try to remain open-minded okay?
With an age upwards of 50 years, Mort may appear older than he feels. In the episode
“Daddy Julien,” Mort takes offence when called “old,” retorting with a low, peeved tone,
“I’m not really THAT much older.”
In a shocking revelation in the episode “Revenge of the Prom,” it is hinted that Mort
suffered sexual abuse at the hands of Grammy Mort, which eventually led to her
absorption. Despite these tumultuous aspects of his life, Mort has shown immense
talent in several fields. He has exhibited exceptional skills in money management, art,
and playing the organ. He also has a peculiar habit of referring to his tail as Rodney.
Mort also exhibits vorarephilia, an erotic fascination with the idea of being consumed or
consuming another. This unusual interest manifests in the show through Mort’s
frequent desire to be eaten.

The complexities of Mort’s character don’t end there; his family tree and
history also raise quite a few eyebrows. It’s worth noting that Mort has
been married 14 times, with 12 of his wives remaining unnamed and
having passed away. You might be wondering about the circumstances of
their deaths and their identities. While we don’t have substantial evidence
to delve into these mysteries, based on Mort’s peculiar interests and past,
one might harbour suspicions about the nature of these relationships.
So, now that the veil has been lifted from Mort’s fascinating character,
what are your thoughts? What do you think about Mort? Still, feel the
same about this little ball of fuzz?

REMEMBER, YOU HAVE
THE POWER TO LEAVE
DEAR YOUNG ADULTS
Remember, your well-being is paramount. Trust your
intuition and don’t hesitate to leave discomfort behind.
This narrative extends beyond the act of leaving. It’s a testament to your inherent
strength, your ability to assert yourself and establish your boundaries. Never allow
anyone to belittle or guilt-trip you for evacuating a situation that mars your happiness.
Resist anyone who attempts to coerce you into staying in an environment you’d rather
not be in. You are deserving of spaces and circumstances that nourish your peace and
happiness.
So, to you, the fearless champions of the
future, I implore you not to shy away from
exercising your right to exit when
necessary. Stand tall, assert your worth
and prioritize your well-being. You are
entitled to be in environments that uplift
your spirit and spark joy. Trust in your
wisdom. You are the best judge of what
serves you. Heed the whisperings of your
intuition and don’t hesitate to seize the
reins of your life.
Remember, the power to leave lies within
your grasp wield it with wisdom and
courage.
As you bravely navigate the uncharted territories of life, it’s inevitable that you will
encounter situations that are disconcerting, situations that may make you feel
uncomfortable or are not conducive to your growth. I urge you to always remember, you
are endowed with the sublime power to leave.
Take a moment and let’s ponder over healthcare. If your current physician doesn’t inspire
trust or fails to provide you the comfort you need, never forget that you possess the
audacity to part ways, even in the midst of an ongoing consultation. I acknowledge that
this idea may sound daunting, but your well-being, your health, is far too precious to
remain tethered to a practitioner who disregards your sentiments. Remember, you have
the unalienable right to seek a healer who listens, empathizes, and diligently addresses
your concerns. Do not compromise or accept anything less when it involves your health.
Extend this very ethos to the social sphere as well. If you find yourself at a gathering that
doesn’t kindle joy but instigates stress or discomfort, remind yourself you are under no
obligation to stay. Soirees should be an arena of delight, not a cause of anxiety. Likewise,
if a date is steering into an unpleasant experience, allow yourself to cut it short. It is
infinitely preferable to depart than to endure hours in discomfort or discontentment.
Here’s the critical takeaway there is no mandated ‘polite window to exit. You can
liberate yourself at your will, at any given moment, and for any reason that resonates
with you. Believe in your instincts, trust your intuition. You are a sovereign entity capable
of making choices that serve your best interest. Utilize this power judiciously when your
inner voice signals that something isn’t right.

THE DAY AN ALIEN SAID "NO THANKS"
TO SOUTH AFRICA
Finally, the spaceship touched down and the
door creaked open. Out stepped a creature that
was... well, let's just say it was not what we
were expecting. No green skin or tentacles
here. Instead, the being resembled a hybrid
between a penguin and a flamingo, draped in
what appeared to be a velvet robe.
Was it a bit extravagant?
Absolutely. Absolutely fabulous that is...
The alien, let's call him Zog for the sake of this
story, took one look around and seemed a bit
puzzled. The crowd drew closer, excitement
building.
"Welcome to South Africa!" someone called
out.
Zog adjusted a device on his wrist and,
miraculously, started speaking perfect English.
"Greetings, Earthlings. I have travelled many
light-years to experience your planet's
wonders."
The crowd cheered. This was going to be epic.
Some eager individuals started suggesting
tourist destinations.
"How about a safari?" one woman suggested.
"Or the beautiful beaches in Cape Town?" a
young man added.
"And don't forget about the majestic
Drakensberg mountains," an elderly gentleman
chimed in.
Zog listened attentively, nodding and
scratching his head with his... wing? Claw?
Let's not get caught up in the details. The point
is, he was visibly confused and increasingly
sceptical.
Short Story: It was a day like any other in South Africa.
The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the
citizens were going about their business as usual. And
then it happened: A blinding flash of light in the sky,
followed by a strange, otherworldly hum that echoed
across the land.
Now, you would think that people might panic, perhaps
grab their tin foil hats and head for the hills. But not us
South Africans. No, we are a curious bunch, with a hearty
appetite for adventure and a healthy sense of humour.
As the spaceship descended, a small crowd gathered,
smartphones in hand, eager to capture what was sure to
be the social media sensation of the year. Local vendors
quickly set up stalls, selling anything from bottled water
to "I survived the alien invasion" T-shirts. Entrepreneurs,
you've got to love them.

At that moment, a street performer began
playing the vuvuzela, loud and proud.
People started running around shouting
and screaming filled with excitement. A
group of children ran past, kicking a soccer
ball and laughing. A couple argued about
directions, oblivious to the spectacle at
hand. And someone stopped me asking for
a R2, only a R2... Ah, the sights and
sounds of South Africa!
Zog's eyes widened. His feathers, or what
seemed like feathers, ruffled. He looked
increasingly uncomfortable. He glanced at
his wrist device, then back at the crowd,
then at the landscape around him.
Finally, he spoke. "I must reconsider. Your
world is very... interesting. But I believe I
have seen enough."
The crowd fell silent. Did he just say he
had seen enough? We were just getting
started! We hadn't even offered him
boerewors or shown him a good game of
rugby! Does he even know about Bongi
Mbonambi?
With a polite nod, Zog returned to his
spaceship. The door closed behind him,
and the craft lifted off, disappearing into
the sky as quickly as it had arrived.
The crowd dispersed, slightly bewildered
with a granny being heard saying ‘Hayi,
voetsek wena”.
The vendors counted their earnings and
packed up their stalls. The street performer
took a bow, vuvuzela in hand. The children
continued to play, and the arguing couple
finally figured out where they were going.
The R2 guy, well he tried again in any
case... KFC donations for who?
As for Zog? Well, we can only speculate.
Perhaps he returned to his home planet to tell
tales of the strange and bewildering world he
had visited. Perhaps he chose a different
vacation destination, his loss though... as we
were ready for a braai and a beer.

Veganism
FOR BEGINNERS
YOUR COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO A
PLANT-BASED LIFESTYLE
"WHY SHOULD I EVEN CONSIDER GOING VEGAN?" THE REASONS
ARE MULTIFACETED! FROM THE ETHICAL STANCE OF REDUCING
ANIMAL SUFFERING TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT AND
HEALTH BENEFITS, VEGANISM IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH TO LIFE.
60
Plant-based: A diet consisting largely or
entirely of foods derived from plants.
Cruelty-free: Products not tested on
animals and free from animal ingredients.
Eco-friendly: Sustainable and not harmful
to the environment.
Before we proceed further, let's get familiar
with some key terms:
Understanding these terms will help you
make informed decisions throughout your
vegan journey.
DECODING FOOD LABELS
Reading food labels is crucial. Look for
certifications like 'Vegan Society Approved,'
or 'Certified Vegan.' Also, be wary of
ingredients like gelatine, whey, and other
animal by-products.
PLANNING YOUR MEALS
Meal planning might seem like a daunting
task, but it can actually be quite enjoyable.
Start simple with foods you already enjoy and
know how to prepare. For example, you can
easily swap out dairy milk with almond or oat
milk in your morning cereal.
DISCOVERING FOOD ALTERNATIVES
There's a universe of delicious food
alternatives out there. With the rise of plant-
based meats, cheeses, and even eggs, you'll
never feel deprived. Brands like Frys Family
Foods, Simple Truth and others offer
scrumptious burgers and other meat
alternatives that even meat-lovers enjoy.
VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS
Vitamins and minerals are crucial for a well-
rounded vegan diet. While plants are
nutrient-rich, some nutrients like vitamin B12
and omega-3 fatty acids are primarily found
in animal products. Don't worry! Supplements
are readily available, and foods like fortified
cereals and flaxseeds can fill in the nutritional
gaps.
EATING OUT AND SOCIAL EVENTS
Navigating social gatherings and restaurants can
sometimes be a challenge. Most restaurants now
have vegan options, and if not, they're usually happy
to accommodate. Just be sure to ask for a meal
customised to your dietary needs.
PREPPING YOUR KITCHEN
Your kitchen will be the centre of your vegan
lifestyle. Stock up on staples like lentils, chickpeas,
quinoa, and a variety of spices. Invest in quality
kitchen appliances like a good blender for smoothies
and a pressure cooker for legumes and grains.
ECO-FRIENDLY LIVING BEYOND DIET
Veganism isn't just about what you eat. Consider
other aspects like clothing, cosmetics, and even
household cleaners. Look for cruelty-free and eco-
friendly options whenever possible.
JOIN A COMMUNITY
The transition is always smoother when you have a
support system. Online communities, forums, and
local groups can provide invaluable tips, recipes, and
moral support. Remember, you're not alone in this!
COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
Being Too Hard on Yourself: Mistakes happen, learn
from them and move on.
Not Doing Enough Research: Veganism is a lifestyle
change; do your homework.
Ignoring Nutrition: Don't just focus on eliminating
animal products; ensure you're getting all the
essential nutrients.

WHY SOME PEOPLE GO VEGAN
When it comes to dietary choices, veganism is more than just a trend; for many, it's a commitment that
affects every aspect of their lives. While the motivations for adopting this lifestyle vary from person to
person, they often share common threads
ETHICAL CONCERNS FOR ANIMAL WELFARE
One of the most cited reasons for adopting a vegan lifestyle is a desire to promote animal welfare. Many
people are concerned about the ethical implications of factory farming, where animals are often kept in
poor conditions and subjected to cruel treatment. Veganism offers a way to abstain from contributing to
these practices, thereby alleviating some of the ethical dilemmas associated with animal consumption.
As the global population continues to grow, achieving food security for all becomes increasingly
challenging. Plant-based diets are often cited as more sustainable, requiring fewer resources to produce
the same amount of nutrients as an animal-based diet. This sustainability aspect can be particularly
appealing for those concerned about the long-term health of our planet and its inhabitants.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS
The environmental impact of animal agriculture is another driving force behind the shift towards
veganism. Raising livestock requires significant resources, including land, water, and food, contributing
to deforestation and water pollution. The industry is also a significant source of greenhouse gas
emissions, which contribute to climate change. By choosing plant-based alternatives, vegans aim to
minimise their environmental footprint.
HEALTH BENEFITS
There's a growing body of evidence to suggest that a plant-based diet can offer various health
advantages. Vegans often report lower levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, a reduced risk of heart
disease, and better overall physical health. Some also find that a vegan diet helps with weight
management and provides higher levels of energy.
FOOD SECURITY AND SUSTAINABILITY
CULTURAL AND SPIRITUAL BELIEFS
In some cases, individuals are influenced by their cultural or spiritual beliefs to adopt a vegan lifestyle.
For example, certain religious teachings advocate for a plant-based diet as a means of living a more
compassionate life. Additionally, some indigenous cultures have plant-focused diets that align naturally
with vegan principles.

Facebook Groups:
Joining a Facebook group focused on veganism provides an excellent platform for meeting like-minded
individuals and exchanging ideas. Below is a curated list of Facebook groups that are particularly helpful for
South Africans on their journey toward adopting a more plant-based, vegan lifestyle. These groups offer
everything from recipe suggestions to general discussions.
As vegans, we stand up against animal abuse and cruelty, and we are aware of the brutality within the dairy and meat industry. However,
sometimes we forget to stand up for ourselves and our health. I sat down with cardiologist Dr Alosha Singh, who is also a long-time client of
Vicky's Veganry, and we spoke about veganism and heart health. Dr Singh was a vegetarian for many years and decided to switch to
veganism after her sister sent her an article about Dr Kim Williams, an American cardiologist and fellow at the American College of
Cardiology, who is vegan and promotes a plant-based lifestyle to his patients.
Since then, Dr Singh has aimed to follow his example by not only trying to cure patients with heart disease but also helping them maintain a
healthy lifestyle. She goes beyond prescribing medication to address the underlying causes. As a doctor, she is guided by a moral compass
to ensure she gives her patients the best possible care and outcomes for each health issue they have. She is in the process of launching a
lifestyle aspect where they will teach people how to make delicious and healthy plant-based food, showing them that being healthy can also
be easy.

hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol,
and obesity. Therefore, it's important to
ensure that we eat fibre-rich foods,
vegetables, and fruits like beans, samp,
rice, kale, spinach, berries, bananas, tofu,
and tempeh, and steer clear of processed
foods.
How would I know if my heart is
unhealthy? Dr Singh says the first step
would be to have your blood pressure
checked. It's such a simple and easy
process, with many pharmacies like Clicks
and Dischem offering these services.
Symptoms of an unhealthy heart include
an increase in headaches, fatigue, and
heart palpitations. However, it's not too
late to get your heart back in shape. Once
you change your habits, you can reverse
some of the damage done within weeks.
Let's discuss the significance of avocado,
beans and legumes, whole grains, potato,
corn, squash, oats, fruit, and non-starchy
vegetables in promoting a heart-healthy
vegan lifestyle.
1. Avocado: Rich in monounsaturated fats,
avocados are excellent for reducing bad
cholesterol levels, potentially lowering the
risk of heart disease. They're also a
source of potassium, which can help in
managing blood pressure.
2. Beans and Legumes: These are
powerhouse foods that are packed with
fibre, protein, and antioxidants. The fibre
in beans can help lower cholesterol and
stabilize blood sugar, both of which are
vital for heart health.
3. Whole Grains: Whole grains like quinoa,
barley, and brown rice have been linked to
a reduced risk of heart disease, mainly
because of their fibre content. They help in
reducing bad cholesterol and provide a
steady release of energy, preventing
spikes in blood sugar.
4. Potato, Corn, and Squash: Apart from
being a good source of energy, these
starchy vegetables provide essential
nutrients like potassium, magnesium, and
antioxidants. Potassium is particularly
essential for maintaining healthy blood
pressure.
5. Oats: Renowned for their beta-glucans,
oats are excellent in reducing LDL
cholesterol and overall cholesterol levels,
which are indicators of heart disease risk.
6. Fruit: Fruits such as berries, apples,
and citrus fruits are rich in vital
antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. They
play a role in reducing blood pressure and
lowering the risk of heart disease.
7. Non-Starchy Vegetables: Veggies like
kale, spinach, and broccoli are low in
calories but high in essential nutrients and
antioxidants. They are linked to a reduced
risk of chronic diseases, including heart
diseases.
Incorporating a mix of these nutrient-
dense foods not only promotes
cardiovascular well-being but also
supports overall health in a holistic
manner. Whether you're a seasoned
vegan or just starting on this journey,
prioritising these foods in your diet can
pave the way for a healthier heart and a
more vibrant life.

2 cups of red lentils (washed, no pre-
soak)
1 large onion - chopped
1 tsp turmeric powder
4 cloves garlic - finely chopped
1.5 tsp cumin seeds
1.5 tsp black mustard seeds
2 sprigs curry leaves
1 green chilli (optional for heat)
3 dried red chillies (recommended for
slight heat with smoky flavour)
1 grated tomato
1 tsp salt
Dhal:
For the tempering:
Then, in a separate pot, prepare the tempering—add some oil (1-2 tsp) in a
small pot on medium heat. Add the cumin and mustard seeds, curry leaves,
garlic, and green and red chilli. The seeds should splutter and release a
beautiful aroma. Add the grated tomato and cook for a few more minutes.
Add this to the top of the dhal, with some salt to taste. Garnish with coriander
leaves.
Ingredients
Method
Fry the onions in 1 tsp of oil until translucent. Add the washed red lentils and 1
litre of boiling water to the pot. Add 1 tsp of turmeric powder. Bring to the boil,
then lower the heat to low/medium with the lid on. The lentils will cook and
break down into a creamy consistency. Do not be tempted to add more
water, as the dhal may turn out too runny. If you think it needs some water,
then add just a little boiling water. You ideally want to maintain a thick
consistency.

Avocados! You've likely seen them in the shop or maybe you've been unable to buy a house because you eat Avos on toast on
occasion. But did you know these green fruits are little powerhouses of goodness? Let's chat about why they're so great for you.
The Wonderful Benefits of
Avocados
Full of Goodness: Avocados are like a treasure chest of
vitamins and minerals. They've got vitamin K, vitamin E, and
vitamin C, among others. Plus, they even have more
potassium than bananas. That's impressive!
Heart-Friendly: These fruits are packed with good fats. Yes,
there are good fats! These fats are friendly to our heart and
can help to lower the bad fats in our blood.
Good for the Eyes: Avocados have stuff called antioxidants
that are super for our eyes. They help keep our eyes bright
and can protect them as we get older.
Strong Bones: Remember vitamin K we talked about? It's
fantastic for our bones. It works like a helper, making sure
our bones use the calcium we eat.
Helps Digestion: Ever felt your tummy rumble? Eating
avocados can help. They've got fibre which is great for our
stomach and helps keep things moving.
Skin and Hair: Want shiny hair and smooth skin? Avocados
to the rescue! Some even mash it and put it on their skin
and hair like a mask.
Feel Full for Longer: Because of the good fats and fibre,
after eating avocados, you won't feel hungry quickly. It's like
a natural tummy filler!
Might Keep Illness Away: Some clever people think
avocados might help to stop certain illnesses. It's still being
studied, but that's another cool point for avocados.

Preparation: Place a large, shallow container or loaf tin in the freezer to chill.
Coconut Milk: Open the refrigerated cans of coconut milk and scoop out the
solid coconut cream that has risen to the top, placing it in a high-speed
blender. Reserve the liquid for other uses, like smoothies.
Blend: Add the almond milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of
salt to the blender along with the coconut cream.
Mix Until Smooth: Blend all the ingredients on high speed until well-
combined and smooth. Make sure there are no lumps or gritty sugar
particles.
Taste Test: Sample the mixture and adjust the sweetness or vanilla flavour
as needed. If it's too thick, you can add a bit more almond milk to achieve
your desired consistency.
Pour and Freeze: Pour the blended mixture into the chilled container or loaf
tin. Cover it with a lid or cling film.
First Freeze: Freeze the mixture for about 2 hours. Then, take it out and give
it a good stir to break up any ice crystals that may have formed.
Final Freeze: Return the container to the freezer and allow it to freeze
completely, usually another 4-5 hours or overnight for best results.
Serving: Before serving, let the ice cream sit at room temperature for a few
minutes to soften, making it easier to scoop.

CILANTRO Like it or hate it?
Also known as coriander, some people truly
have a love-hate relationship with this delicious
or yucky herb... which one are you?
Ah, cilantro! The green herb that should really come with
its own warning label. It's the ultimate culinary polariser,
capable of turning family dinners into full-blown
courtroom dramas. There you are, innocently passing the
salad, when suddenly—bam! World War III erupts over a
few green leaves.
First up, the cilantro lovers. These people treat cilantro
like it's the VIP guest at every meal. To them, cilantro isn't
just an herb; it's an essential life force. They describe its
taste with the excitement of a child on Christmas morning
—zesty, citrusy, a little bit of magic. These are the folks
who'll pack their picnic baskets with cilantro-flavored
everything, convinced that this is the path to culinary
enlightenment.
Then we have the cilantro haters. They're not just casual
dislikers; they're the ones who'd opt for a root canal over
a cilantro-topped taco. To them, this innocent-looking
green is the devil's confetti. Soap, dirt, bugs—you name
the unpleasant thing, and they'll say cilantro tastes like it.
And guess what? Science is their wingman! A gene
actually makes cilantro taste like soap to some people.
So, it's not their fault; their DNA is basically playing a
practical joke on them.
Ah, but let's not forget the cilantro fence-sitters, the
"meh"-ers of the herb world. These are the people who
treat cilantro like elevator music—nice in the background,
but easily forgotten. They could take it or leave it. It's as
though cilantro, for them, is that one movie extra whose
name you can never remember but who shows up in
every film you see.
So, where do you fall in the grand cilantro spectrum? Are
you a fervent admirer, a determined despiser, or just
utterly indifferent?
Your "yum" might be someone else's "yuck," but hey,
that's the spice of life—or, in this case, the herb.

Enthusiast who loves production. I think music in general helps one elevate
their mood, which I find interesting if I can make music that makes someone
happy or even smile, that's enough.
It would whisk them away to the ethereal transition between night and day, where
sunsets melt into radiant sunrises. Amidst this celestial dance, the heart feels the
warmth of cherished memories, like adventures shared with close friends, painting the
canvas of the mind with moments of magic.
While listening to one of your tracks with closed eyes, where would you imagine it
takes the listener on a journey?
It's a symphony of evolution, akin to a gentle tide meeting a passionate storm
— progressive in its journey, passive in its subtlety, yet profoundly expressive in
the stories it tells.
If your music were a palette of colours, which three would dominate and why?
Emerald green for life, azure blue for depth, and sunlit yellow for joy.
Who is Vanders and what do you want the world to know about you?
Pierce Fulton from "Leaving Laurel", talented with beautiful melodies,
piano chord progressions, field recordings, experimenting with
different frequency etc. He was and is still an incredible inspiration!
If you could time-travel and collaborate with any artist from the past,
who would it be and why?
How would you describe your style of music?
Imagine you're given the opportunity to play at any venue in the world,
real or fictional. Where would it be and why?
I'd choose a made-up place in the Drakensberg mountains. A stage
set up high where the sun first peeks at dawn. Even though I like to
stay behind the scenes, there, my music would blend with the sunrise,
making a magical morning melody.

My love for music began at home with my dad. He played the drums
and every beat told a story. I used to sit and listen to him, completely
lost in the sound. It felt like he was sharing tales of his life and dreams
through his music. Those memories with him made me fall in love with
music. Today, every song I produce is a tribute to those moments and
my dad's passion.
Having a passion for music comes from various places for
different artists. Where did your passion for music originate?
Melodic Progressive House is known for its emotive and atmospheric
soundscapes. How do you approach sound design, and are there specific
tools or techniques you favour to achieve your signature sound?
Melodic Progressive House is all about evoking deep emotions and
painting vivid sonic pictures. My approach to sound design is rather
intuitive. While many might rely on established formulas, I prefer to
go on a journey of exploration, often employing a trial-and-error
method. There's a certain magic in letting the music guide you, and
when that perfect sound emerges and aligns with my vision, it's an
indescribable feeling, but it's always that inner connection to the
sound that determines my direction.
"In every beat lies a tale waiting to be
told, and in every note, a dance of
emotions waiting to unfold."

In the smoky corridors of cult cinema, there's a particular scent
that stands out – the unmistakably pungent aroma of the "Evil
Bong" series. This wacky, weed-infused world has cultivated a
dedicated fanbase, proving that sometimes, the most 'baked'
ideas can spark the most fun.
Meet the Evil Bong, a malevolent water pipe with a 'high'
ambition: to trap souls. Sounds like a 'pipe' dream, right? But this
isn't just any bong; it's the ultimate party pooper. One puff and
you're plunged into a trippy realm inside the bong itself. Talk
about getting lost in the weeds!
The series lit up in 2006, and it was clear from the first puff...
erm, film... that this wasn't your garden-variety horror-comedy.
Directed by Charles Band – a name that rings a 'bell' in the B-
movie world – the film set the 'roll'ing paper for the sequels.
With each new film, the plot grew more twisted than a joint at a
reggae festival.
As the smoke cleared from one film to the next, the universe
expanded. Sultry Eebee, adventures in the Bong World, and even
a 'baked' battle with the "Gingerdead Man" – it's a pot-pourri of
absurdity.
And let's be blunt, the series knows it's a bit of a 'toke' and revels
in it. Characters often 'weed' out the absurdity, breaking the
fourth wall with puns so sharp they'd give you a paper cut.
What's kept this franchise 'rolling'? Its fans, who are more
dedicated than a stoner to a bag of crisps. They've inhaled every
film, exhaled laughter, and sparked a community that celebrates
the series' unapologetic silliness. Merchandise, conventions, spin-
offs – it's clear the "Evil Bong" series has 'cashed' in its bowl of
success.
To wrap it up in a neat little roach, the "Evil Bong" cinematic
universe is a 'hit' in the world of cult classics. It's a blend of
horror, comedy, and sheer 'dope'ness that's sure to give you the
giggles. As the series continues to 'grow', one thing's for sure: it'll
keep fans 'rolling' in the aisles, laughing and passing the
popcorn.
Yes i know i made a lot of puns... no regrets.
So grab your munchies, google and watch this cinematic
universe. Perfect to avoid those pesky family members this
festive season.

Hey there, little one! Let’s talk about something called
thermodynamics. It’s a big word, but its all about things we see
and feel every day, like warmth and movement.
You know how you feel nice and warm when mommy or daddy
gives you a nice bottle of milk? Well, thats a bit of
thermodynamics happening right there. The bottle is warm, and
when you hold it, that warmth spreads from the bottle to you.
That’s because heat, which is a kind of energy, loves to move
from warm things to cooler things, just like the way your teddy
bear loves to snuggle up to you every night!
And what about after you finish your milk? You’re not cold
anymore, right? You might even feel like giggling, squirming, and
playing. Thats because the heat from your milk hasnt
disappeared; it’s just changed its job. Its become energy that
helps you move and play. This is a special thing about energy; it
cant just disappear. It can only change its job, kind of like how a
chameleon changes its colours!
And you know what? This funny word, thermodynamics’, isn’t
just about milk bottles and playing. It helps us understand lots of
things! Like how a car moves, or how our bodies stay warm even
when its cold outside.
So, even though you’re still a little one, you’re already a bit of a
scientist, experiencing thermodynamics in your own cute, baby
way! Isn’t that cool?!

The Curious Case
of Woodys
Holster
Have you ever paused and pondered why Woody, with his
iconic cowboy hat and boots, possesses a holster but no
gun?
This question has intrigued and mystified fans for decades,
and I believe it's high time we shed some light on this
mystery. So, prepare yourself for an enlightening journey as
we delve deep into the enigma of Woody’s holster.
One prevalent theory suggests that Woody’s holster was
primarily a design element, crafted to accentuate his cowboy
look.
The creators aimed for Woody to embody the quintessential
cowboy, and what encapsulates this more than a hat, boots,
and a holster? The deliberate omission of a gun might be a
nod to the wholesome nature of the Toy Story films. After all,
presenting our endearing cowboy leader with a firearm in a
film tailored for children might not sit well, right?
Another captivating perspective is the symbolic
representation of Woody’s holster.
As the uncontested leader of the toys in Andy’s room, could
Woody’s holster be an emblem of his leadership? It subtly
alludes to the archetypal cowboy hero, where the
protagonist often has a gun in a holster. Even though Woody
is devoid of a gun, the mere presence of the holster might be
a subtle indication of his role as the guardian and mentor of
the toys.
Woody’s vacant holster might also be a gentle reminder that
the Toy Story films cater to a younger audience. Introducing a
gun as part of Woody’s ensemble could potentially render
the characterless amiable and more contentious, especially
for a film intended for families. By equipping Woody with a
holster sans a gun, the creators have adeptly preserved his
cowboy identity while ensuring he remains relatable to
viewers of all ages.
Yet another enthralling theory is the inclusion of the holster
in Woody’s design for versatility. The absence of a gun offers
Woody the flexibility to seamlessly fit into diverse scenarios
and narratives. This adaptability ensures that Woody’s
character can evolve and remain relevant throughout the Toy
Story saga, making him a perennial favourite amongst fans
young and old.
The exact rationale behind Woody’s holster might remain
shrouded in mystery, but it undeniably adds depth to his
character design. Where do you stand on this?
Is there an underlying significance to Woody’s holster, or do
you perceive it as a simple design element?

A Christmas Story:
Hey mom and dad... here‘s an enchanting Christmas story to read! Discover how Santa Claus,
Mrs. Claus, and their diligent elves work tirelessly to craft perfect presents and spread joy to
good boys and girls around the world.
“Wonderful, absolutely wonderful!"
Santa exclaimed, his face lighting up
like a Christmas tree.
"Santa, would you like to see the secret
special project we’ve been working on
this year?" Twinkle asked with a wink,
directing his attention to a large object
draped with a sparkling red and gold
cloth in the corner of the room.
Santa's eyes widened with excitement.
"A surprise? For me? You shouldn’t
have!" he said, walking over with Mrs.
Claus. With a quick flick of their tiny
hands, the elves revealed the hidden
treasure—a magical, lifelike carousel
with prancing unicorns, majestic lions,
and elegant swans.
"Isn't it delightful?" Mrs. Claus said.
"Little Emily from Sydney has been
dreaming of carousels all year long.
She will be over the moon!"
"You elves have outdone yourselves!"
Santa cheered, clapping his hands in
delight, which caused a small flurry of
snowflakes to fall from the ceiling.
"Alright, everyone. It’s time to put the

creations. We've got many stockings to
fill and dreams to fulfill!" Santa
announced, donning his red velvet hat.
And so, the elves hurried back to their
stations, chattering and singing as they
added the last sprinkles of fairy dust
and magical essence to each gift.
Even the reindeer joined in on the
excitement, dancing and prancing in
their stable, eagerly awaiting the
night's journey.
Finally, Christmas Eve arrived. With the
reindeer harnessed and the sleigh
overflowing with meticulously crafted
presents, Santa, in his resplendent red
suit, was prepared for the magical ride.
Waving farewell to Mrs. Claus and his
elfin crew, he took off into the
shimmering night, ready to deliver joy
and wonder to children all over the
world.
As Santa soared through the skies, the
stars seemed to dance, and the moon
smiled, knowing the happiness that
would soon fill countless homes. For
back at the North Pole, the elves
clinked their cocoa mugs together in a
jubilant toast, their hearts swelling with
pride and joy for another year of
successful, loving toil.
The next morning, children woke up
with eyes wide and hearts pounding,
rushing to their Christmas trees to find
the beautifully wrapped presents left
by Santa and his elves. Each gift was a
tiny miracle, filled with the magic and
wonder that only the North Pole could
offer.
The end.
Once upon a time in the snowy
wonderland of the North Pole, Santa
Claus was busy preparing for the most
joyful night of the year—Christmas Eve!
Surrounded by his diligent elves, the
workshop was a swirl of twinkling
lights, candy canes, and the delightful
aroma of gingerbread and pine. The
Christmas carols played softly in the
background, filling the air with a sense
of wonder and merriment.
Mrs. Claus walked in, her arms laden
with a tray of freshly baked sugar
cookies and steaming mugs of hot
cocoa topped with whipped cream and
a sprinkle of cinnamon. "Ah, my love,
you've brought the perfect treat to keep
the elves' spirits high," Santa
exclaimed, grabbing a cookie and
savouring the delicious taste.
As the elves took their break, they
gathered around Santa, eager to hear
updates. "Twinkle, my trusty head elf,
how are we doing on the grand toy-
making schedule? Will we be ready for
the big night?" asked Santa, peering
over his half-moon glasses at a thick
ledger that held the secrets of this
year’s presents.
Twinkle flipped through the pages, her
eyes gleaming with pride. "Santa, we're
right on schedule! The teddy bears are
stuffed and stitched, the model
aeroplanes are in their final stage, and
the toy kitchens just received their last
coat of non-toxic paint."

THE ORIGIN
STORY OF
SANTA CLAUS
How it all began
Ah, Christmas! You can't help but feel cheerful when this
season rolls around. Twinkling lights, Christmas trees, and
that joyous excitement that fills the air. But let's not forget
the main man of the hour—Santa Claus! So, where did he
even come from? Grab some cocoa, and let's chat about
it!
Did you know that Santa Claus didn't start as the gift-
giving, sleigh-driving guy we know today? Nope, he has
roots as St. Nicholas of Myra, a 4th-century Greek bishop.
St. Nick was the kind of guy you’d want around during
tough times. Famous for his generosity, he was always
looking out for the less fortunate. There's even a story
where he tossed bags of gold into the home of three poor
sisters to help them out. Pretty awesome, right?
Fast forward a few centuries, and this guy’s reputation
spread like wildfire. He became the talk of the town—or
more like the talk of Europe! People from France to
Germany were all about St. Nicholas. Kids started leaving
out their shoes or stockings, and guess what? They’d find
them filled with gifts the next day!
As time went on, people started reimagining St. Nicholas in
various ways. In England, he became "Father Christmas,"
and in France, it was "Père Noël." But it's the Dutch who
really gave us the Santa we know. They called him
Sinterklaas, and they took him all the way to America when
they settled there.
Things got even better when a guy named Clement Clarke
Moore wrote "The Night Before Christmas" in 1823. This
poem was a game-changer! Now Santa had reindeer, a
sleigh, and a home at the North Pole. The reindeer even
had names, which is just adorable!
During the late 19th century, an illustrator named Thomas
Nast began drawing Santa and his characteristics started
to solidify. Santa was now this plump, merry man in a red
suit with a white beard. Also, Coca-Cola jumped on the
bandwagon and had an artist make Santa their holiday
poster boy, which just made him even more popular.

Nowadays, we've got Santa popping up in movies, songs,
and even holiday commercials. From classic films to your
favourite Christmas jingles, Santa's become an
international superstar. Whether you think of him as a
symbol of kindness, or just a fun part of the holiday
season, there's no denying that Santa Claus brings a
whole lot of happiness into our lives.
So there you have it—the story of how a generous bishop
turned into the Santa Claus we all love today. He's a
mishmash of history, tradition, and a sprinkle of
commercialism, but who cares? He's Santa, and he’s
awesome!
When you're celebrating this holiday season, whether
you're unwrapping presents or enjoying some quality
time with family and friends, just remember the long
journey that Santa Claus has taken to get to your living
room. It’s a magical tale that makes the holiday season
even more special.
And that's the beauty of Santa Claus. He might be a
mythical figure, but the joy and the spirit he brings?
Totally real. So here’s to Santa Claus and all the
happiness he brings! Happy Holidays!

MEET MARI LWYD
Celebrating the Welsh Way
Oh, the chill is in the air, the nights are
getting longer, and our woolly jumpers are
making their yearly reappearance from the
depths of our wardrobes. Okay, not really...
we are in South Africa. It’s warm i know. But if
you're in Wales during the festive season,
prepare for something far more spellbinding
and intriguing — the tradition of Mari Lwyd!
The Mari Lwyd (pronounced "Mah-ree Loo-
eed") tradition is like a page out of a fairy
tale book, and oh, what a tale it is!
Originating from South Wales, this ritual is a
beloved seasonal custom that has been
celebrated for centuries. It takes place
around Christmastime and New Year’s,
where it animates the Welsh communities
like a sprinkling of magic dust over a winter
landscape.
So what exactly is Mari Lwyd? At first glance,
you might mistake it for something eerie.
Picture this: a horse skull elegantly adorned
with bells, ribbons, and baubles, attached to
a long pole and carried around the village.
No, it’s not a Halloween leftover; it’s the
embodiment of a tradition that's brimming
with history and symbolism.
Beneath the horse skull, someone dons a
white cloth, transforming into the Mari Lwyd.
In this guise, they join a troupe of revellers
who wander from door to door, filling the air
with lively songs, poems, and even
challenges posed to the householders. It’s
as if the skull comes alive, partaking in the
community’s festivities with gusto.
But why a horse skull, you may wonder? The
symbolism behind Mari Lwyd is deeply
rooted in Welsh mythology and folklore.
Some say it represents the passing of the
old year and the welcoming of the new.
Others argue that it's an embodiment of
ancient Celtic beliefs connecting the horse
to sovereignty and fertility.
Ah, but the fun doesn’t stop with the skull!
You see, when the Mari Lwyd troupe visits a
home, a unique verbal showdown ensues.
It’s a playful banter, a war of words, pitting
the residents against the Mari Lwyd group.
The householders must answer the troupe’s
challenges with clever rhymes of their own,
all in good humour. If the Mari Lwyd group
wins the exchange, they are invited inside,
where they bless the house with good
fortune for the coming year. However, win or
lose, the atmosphere remains joyous, often
concluding with shared drinks, mince pies,
and a collective sense of community spirit.
You may think this tradition is limited to
small rural villages, but it's experiencing a
renaissance in contemporary Welsh culture.
New generations are rediscovering their
roots, incorporating the Mari Lwyd tradition
into modern festivities, and ensuring that it
thrives for years to come.
Part of the charm of Mari Lwyd is its
adaptability. Some communities add their
own twist to the tradition, like incorporating
riddles, dances, or even puppetry into the
mix. Yet, the essence remains the same: a
community coming together to celebrate its
heritage, challenging the chill of winter with
the warmth of tradition, humour, and unity.

QUIRKY SIDE OF CHRISTMAS:
TIÓ DE NADAL
Oh, holly jolly me, it's that time of year again! Time for
twinkling lights, gingerbread cookies, and carolers
serenading us with timeless classics. But, wait a second—
put down that mince pie and let's talk about something a
little different in the realm of festive frolics. I’m talking
about Catalonia’s very own Tió de Nadal, a peculiar
wooden log that’s captured the imagination of many, while
bringing family members together for an experience that’s
nothing short of...shall we say...explosively fun!
Now, I know what you're thinking—how can a log be so
interesting? Oh, but it's not just any log; it’s Tió de Nadal,
the magical Christmas log of Catalonia! Known also as the
“Caga Tió,” or "pooping log," this isn't your run-of-the-mill
piece of timber. Nope, it’s a festive staple, a yuletide hero, if
you will, that excretes presents for all the good children
(and let’s be honest, adults too) out there.
Let’s start by describing this jolly wooden creature. This isn’t
just any ordinary log lying around in your fireplace. No, sir!
It’s carefully chosen and then lavishly adorned with a
painted face and given spindly wooden legs. To top it all
off, he’s dressed in a snazzy red blanket or cloth to keep
him warm through the chilly winter nights. Can you
visualise it? Good, because that image is the epitome of
festive merriment in many Catalan households.
The Tió de Nadal isn’t just for show; it becomes a key family
member during the holiday season. From December 8th,
on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, families ‘feed’
the Tió de Nadal treats like fruits, nuts, and sweets every
night. Now, this isn’t just a decorative element; this is the
build-up to the grand finale! The feeding of the log is an
act of love and care that amplifies the anticipation of
Christmas Eve or Day when the Tió de Nadal will finally
‘give back.’
In an elaborate ceremony that involves a good dose of
singing and stick-whacking, children and family members
encourage the log to "let go" of the goodies. As tradition
goes, the children leave the room to pray for the Tió to
poop out presents. This gives the adults a quick minute to
stash small gifts and treats under the blanket. When the
children return, they use sticks to tap the Tió while singing
traditional Catalan songs that pretty much encourage the
log to 'excrete' its hidden treasures.
SOMETHING MAGAZINE
WWW.THESOMETHINGGUY.CO.ZA
97
So, what comes out, you might wonder? Well, traditionally, the Tió would gift an array of treats
like turrons (a type of nougat), dried figs, and small toys. Nowadays, it’s not uncommon to find
an assortment of modern sweets, fruits, and yes, even the odd bottle of cava for the grown-
ups! It’s a riot of laughter and amusement, and at the end of it, everyone’s a winner.
But where did this whimsical tradition originate? Ah, history lends a magical quill to this tale.
The roots of Tió de Nadal are clouded in the mists of time, but it's generally agreed that it
originated as a harvest ritual. In agrarian societies, the log was a symbol of the hearth and
home, providing warmth during the harsh winter months. The act of ‘feeding’ and ‘hitting’ the
log was a way to coax it to relinquish its bounty. In its modern avatar, the Tió de Nadal serves
as a hilarious and unique way to celebrate the season of giving.
While the Tió de Nadal is quintessentially Catalan, its charm has trotted across borders, making
guest appearances in holiday celebrations around the world, especially where Catalan
communities have set up their homes. It’s a small but growing phenomenon that’s capturing
hearts and imaginations far and wide.
What’s absolutely lovely about this tradition is its flexibility. Some families add their own
modern twists, like incorporating new songs or even changing the type of ‘food’ that the Tió
gets. But no matter the variations, the essence remains the same: a family gathering together
to revel in the joy and quirks of the season.

THE LEGEND OF
KRAMPUS
Jolly bells and twinkling lights may fill your December, but have you ever wondered about the darker, more
mysterious aspects of Christmas? Meet Krampus, the mythological figure who brings an alternative
perspective to the festive season.
When December comes around, we're
usually greeted with warm wishes, joyful
carols, and the sweet aroma of freshly
baked cookies. Yet, in some parts of
Europe, the Christmas season isn't just
about being good for Santa. There's
another figure, one that counters the
joyful disposition of St. Nicholas—Krampus.
Originating in the Alpine regions of Europe,
particularly Austria and Germany,
Krampus is a figure you wouldn't want to
meet on a dark winter night. Unlike St.
Nicholas, who rewards good children with
gifts and treats, Krampus is there to instil
a sense of moral discipline. He serves as a
yin to St. Nicholas' yang; whereas the saint
offers compassion and rewards, Krampus
provides a lesson to those who've
misbehaved.
Contrary to St. Nicholas' inviting and
gentle demeanour, Krampus is usually
depicted as a fearsome creature. Imagine
goat-like horns, a towering physique, and
a long tongue that snakes out
menacingly. He carries chains and bells,
the sounds of which are far from the
comforting jingles we associate with
Christmas. The purpose of these chains
and bells? To scare the living daylights out
of anyone who hears them.
For many families in Europe, Krampus isn't
just a character in a story; he's a part of
their Christmas traditions. In some towns,
people even dress up as Krampus during
the holiday season to participate in
"Krampuslauf," or Krampus runs. These
parades serve as a vivid reminder to both
children and adults that good behaviour
is expected year-round. The character of
Krampus has been so deeply ingrained in
European folklore that he has his own
dedicated day, Krampusnacht, which is
celebrated on the evening of December
5th.
While Krampus might not offer the same
warm and fuzzy feelings that St. Nicholas
does, he plays an important role in
teaching children about the
consequences of their actions. Some
might even argue that this darker aspect
of Christmas is essential to maintain the
holiday’s moral undertones.
Despite his fearsome reputation, Krampus
isn't viewed as evil incarnate. He's more of
a neutral figure, a necessary
counterbalance to the goodness and light
that St. Nicholas brings. In many ways, the
two are inseparable, like two sides of the
same coin.
SOMETHING MAGAZINE
WWW.THESOMETHINGGUY.CO.ZA
99
This dynamic relationship enriches the
festive narrative, making Christmas more
than just a time for gifts and feasting; it
becomes a period for reflection and
moral reckoning as well.
Even though Krampus is predominantly a
European figure, his legend has made its
way across the ocean, gaining some
recognition in North America. Thanks to
movies, television shows, and even comic
books that feature him, Krampus has
become a subject of fascination for many.
Still, his place in the broader Christmas
mythology remains secondary to more
familiar figures like Santa Claus or the
various renditions of St. Nicholas.
But why should we care about Krampus,
especially if he isn't part of our own
traditions? Well, folklore and myths
provide valuable insights into the beliefs,
fears, and hopes of different cultures.
Understanding the role of Krampus in the
Christmas celebrations of certain
European communities offers a broader,
more nuanced view of the holiday itself.
In a world that increasingly seeks the
comfort of black-and-white definitions,
Krampus serves as a reminder that life is
full of shades of grey. He challenges us to
look beyond the purely cheerful aspects
of Christmas and consider the depth and
complexity that come with any long-
standing tradition. Whether you see
Krampus as a necessary counterbalance
to St. Nicholas or as a fascinating example
of how diverse and rich human
storytelling can be, there's no denying that
he adds a unique flavour to the holiday
season.
So, the next time December rolls around
and you're eagerly awaiting the arrival of
St. Nicholas, spare a thought for Krampus.
Whether he fills you with a sense of dread
or piques your curiosity, one thing is clear:
Christmas would be a lot less interesting
without him. After all, it's the different
shades of light and dark that make any
story—or holiday—truly memorable.
Merry Krampus...

HOW THE FESTIVE
SEASON CAN
INFLUENCE YOUR
MENTAL HEALTH
Keep to a Routine: Try to keep doing what you
normally do every day. Go to bed and wake up at the
same time. Eat your meals like you usually do. Routine
gives us a sense of stability, and that can be
comforting.
Take Breaks: Don't feel like you have to be 'on' all the
time. If you're at a gathering and start to feel
overwhelmed, it's okay to step outside for a few
minutes of fresh air or find a quiet space to relax.
Talk About It: If you're feeling down, speak to
someone you trust. Sometimes just talking about how
you feel can make a world of difference. You'll find
you're not alone and that others might be feeling the
same way.
Be Active: Physical activity is good for the mind. A
quick walk around the block, a swim, or even dancing
to your favourite music can lift your spirits. In South
Africa, we're lucky to have beautiful weather this time
of year—so make use of it!
Set Limits: You can't do everything. Decide what's
most important to you and focus on that. If you don't
want to go to every party, that’s fine. Just go to the
ones that mean the most to you. It’s okay to say no.
Enjoy Nature: Spend some time outdoors. Sit in the
garden, have a picnic at the park, or take a drive to the
beach. Nature has a calming effect on our minds.
Oh, the holidays! That time of year when everything seems
to be shining and buzzing with activity. It's when we get
together with family, give gifts, and enjoy some well-
deserved rest. But for some of us, this time can be tough
on our mental health.
You see, while we're all celebrating and feeling merry, it's
easy to feel stressed out too. There's a lot to do: shopping,
cooking, attending parties. All this hustle and bustle can
be overwhelming and can mess with our moods and
feelings. It's not just the busyness; even the weather can
affect how we feel. In some parts of the world, it's super
cold during this time, while in South Africa, it's pretty hot.
Both can affect your mood in different ways.
So what can we do to feel better during the holiday
season? Here are some easy tips anyone can follow:
So, as you go through the holidays, remember to look after
yourself. It’s the best gift you can give to you and those
around you. Cheers to a healthy and happy festive season!

Did you know that the tradition of
hanging stockings comes from a
Dutch legend? According to the tale,
there was a poor man who couldn't
afford dowries for his three
daughters. Saint Nicholas of Myra,
upon hearing this, dropped gold
coins down the chimney, which
landed in the girls' stockings that
were hanging by the fireplace to dry.
This act of generosity saved them
from a life of poverty and inspired
the custom of placing gifts in
stockings.

artistic table.
4. First Thursdays: When Art and Culture Come Out to Play
Now, what if we told you that Cape Town dedicates the first
Thursday of every month to art, culture, and plain ol' fun?
That's right, it's called First Thursdays, and it's like a citywide
block party, art extravaganza, and cultural smorgasbord rolled into
one.
Galleries, cultural institutions, and independent artists keep their
doors open late, and the city's streets come alive with an infectious
energy. It's like a carnival of creativity, where everyone's invited.
You can meander between venues, sip on a glass of wine, enjoy
performances that defy description, and, of course, lose yourself in
art.
First Thursdays is a testament to Cape Town's love affair with the
arts. It's where artists, curators, and anyone with an appreciation
for the quirky, the colourful, and the outlandish come together to
celebrate the magic of creativity.
5. Art Festivals and Events
Cape Town continues beyond galleries and museums. The city
hosts an array of art festivals and events throughout the year.
The Infecting the City Festival takes art to the streets, squares, and
public spaces, turning Cape Town into a canvas for innovative and
thought-provoking performances and installations.
If you're into art that defies the norm and challenges your thinking,
this festival will leave you positively infected with creativity.
For art collectors and enthusiasts, the Cape Town Art Fair is a
treasure trove of contemporary African and international art. It's
like a candy store for grown-ups, offering a wide range of art to
explore and collect. The fair serves as a launchpad for emerging
artists and is a playground of discovery for collectors.

YOUR 2024 HOROSCOPE
The stars indicate that you'll find your true vocation in 2024:
crafting humorous, yet entirely misleading online reviews
for products you've never used. This quirky pastime will
garner you a following of people who are both puzzled and
amused. Pluto advises a cautious approach to your
newfound fame; not everyone appreciates sarcasm with
their purchase.
Are you questioning whether love, wealth, or pizza is on the horizon? The
answer could be all three or none of the above! Such is the unpredictable
beauty of the cosmos. Each zodiac sign will experience its own set of
opportunities and challenges.
The guiding constellations have assembled in this extraordinary year, leaving
tantalising clues about our collective destinies. Whether you are a seasoned
astrological scholar or a casual observer of the night sky, this bespoke
horoscope aims to enlighten, amuse, and maybe, just maybe, offer a glimpse
into the unknown.
Our mission here is not to dictate your fate but to offer you a celestial
compass for the journey ahead. Navigating the astral currents, we'll explore
what makes each star sign uniquely prepared to face the year's challenges
and reap its rewards. The planets have convened, the constellations are set,
and the cosmic ballet begins anew. Ready to explore?
In this year, dear Aquarius, your social circle will expand to
include digital beings. Yes, you and your smart home
assistant will form an emotional bond that no amount of
Wi-Fi interference can sever. Uranus suggests this could be
the beginning of a deep, meaningful relationship focused on
weather updates and setting cooking timers.
Capricorn (December 22 - January 19)
Aquarius (January 20 - February 18)
Pisces (February 19 - March 20)
Pisces, you will be emotionally enlightened this year. Your
heightened sensitivity will extend to your houseplants,
leading to nightly heart-to-heart conversations with your
fern. Neptune encourages this emotional intelligence; just
remember that while talking to your plants is healthy,
getting jealous when they get more sunlight than you is not.
Aries (March 21 - April 19)
This is the year you'll ascend to unprecedented heights of
leisurely indolence, becoming a grandmaster in the ancient
art of couch potato-ism. Saturn aligns in a way that makes
your sofa the gravitational centre of your universe. It's
important to pay attention to your thumbs, though. With
your newfound mastery of the TV remote, "remote control
thumb" is a real risk. To avoid this ailment, daily thumb
stretches are advised—preferably during commercial
breaks.

Oh, Taurus, 2024 heralds extraordinary financial growth for
you! Your wallet will swell, but so will your list of things to
fix around the house. You’ll discover a forgotten treasure in
your sofa, only to realise you've lost your house keys in the
very same cushions. It's a year of ups and downs, or as the
planets like to call it, the great cosmic seesaw.
Gemini, you are the epitome of duality and this year won't
disappoint. One minute you'll be munching on kale,
contemplating a vegan lifestyle, and the next you'll be
wondering if pizza could constitute its own food group. The
alignment of Mars suggests that you should perhaps
consider a balanced diet, which in your case means a slice of
pizza in each hand.
Taurus (April 20 - May 20) Gemini (May 21 - June 20)
Cancer (June 21 - July 22)
The stars suggest that your home will be your sanctuary
this year. Yes, dear Cancer, you can comfortably embrace
your inner hermit crab. But beware! While being a
homebody is relaxing, neglecting to poke your head out of
your shell might mean missing the doorbell when your pizza
delivery arrives. The planets warn: A missed pizza is a
cosmic tragedy.
Leo (July 23 - August 22)
The drama will be high, but fret not; you'll be the
indisputable star. Your flair for theatrics will be recognised,
even if not always appreciated. Venus advises against
breaking into a musical number during important business
meetings. However, it fully supports you singing your order
at the drive-thru.
Virgo (August 23 - September 22)
Virgo, 2024 will be the year you ascend to a PhD level in
procrastination. In fact, you're so proficient, you might have
delayed reading this horoscope until December. Jupiter
recommends setting reminders for your reminders. On the
upside, you'll have an immaculate plan for 2025 by the time
everyone else is taking down their Christmas decorations.
Libra (September 23 - October 22)
Ah, Libra, the scales of justice are ready to tip in your favour
this year. Just be cautious not to imbalance them too much.
You might find yourself entangled in an advanced yoga
pose that requires a YouTube tutorial to escape from.
Mercury suggests keeping your phone within reach, just in
case you need emergency assistance—or at least a good
laugh at yourself.
Scorpio (October 23 - November 21)
This is your year for adventure, Scorpio! Whether it's indoor
skydiving or extreme knitting, your pursuit of thrills will be
both exhilarating and, well, bizarre. The full moon suggests
that whichever you choose, make sure to record it. Your epic
tale—or yarn—will become the stuff of legend, or at least a
viral video.
Sagittarius (November 22 - December 21)
Oh, Sagittarius, the world is your oyster in 2024! Your desire
to travel will be at an all-time high. The planets, however,
indicate that your expeditions might be a bit more local than
you'd expect. Whether journeying to the refrigerator for a
midnight snack or exploring the far reaches of your garden,
prepare for an intimate odyssey.

Interviewing
Anime Titans:
AkiDearest and
Joey, The Anime
Man
One Piece and other Live-Action Adaptations
The interview began with a discussion about the
One Piece live-action adaptation. Joey expressed his
positive surprise at the wardrobe work and the
actors’ portrayal of the characters. He highlighted
the decision to downplay certain physical aspects of
characters, focusing more on their personalities,
which made the world more believable. Joey was
particularly impressed with the actor who portrayed
Buggy, Jeff Ward, capturing both the character’s
maniacal and comedic sides.
Joey, better known as the Anime Man, is a true
heavyweight in the anime and manga scenes.
He’s not just a big name; he’s practically a
legend! Joey’s YouTube channel is at the heart of
his impact, offering a blend of entertainment and
education. It’s not just about racking up views; it’s
a living testament to his unbridled love for
Japanese anime, manga, and the rich tapestry of
Japanese culture.
Aki, or as you may know her, Akidearest, is a shining
star in the YouTube universe of anime and manga,
and what sets her apart is her base in Japan. Her
YouTube channel is like a goldmine for anime and
Japan lovers, where she delves into all things anime,
manga, and Japanese culture. Aki’s videos are not
just informative; they’re as engaging as a
rollercoaster ride, and you can’t miss her genuine
passion for the topic, which has made her a hit with
fans all around the globe.
AkiDearest and Joey, the Anime Man, now going by Joey Bizinger, were interviewed by myself and
Willem V at ComiCon Africa 2023. The interview covered a range of topics, including their thoughts on
the One Piece live-action adaptation, the future of anime distribution, Joey’s creative endeavours, and
Aki’s True Crime series.

Future of Anime Distribution
When asked about balancing his creative endeavours,
Joey discussed his various projects, such as his YouTube
channel, music under “Ikurru,” the Trash Taste podcast,
and his clothing brand, “Nonsense.” He emphasised the
importance of staying passionate about his work and
noted the need to make sacrifices at times.
The conversation then shifted towards the future of anime
distribution, particularly in Western and South African
markets. Joey acknowledged the enthusiasm from
international distributors eager to promote anime
globally. However, he pointed out that the Japanese
anime industry tends to focus more on domestic sales and
marketing.
Joey stressed the need for a shift in the Japanese
industry’s approach to fully embrace the global market.
He believed that once Japan recognises the value of
international support, anime can reach an even wider
audience. To make their voices heard, he encouraged fans
to avoid pirating anime and instead support official
releases through streaming services and the purchase of
licenced merchandise.
Aki also chimed in, noting that the adaptation successfully found a balance between the live-action and anime styles.
She appreciated the commitment to capturing the essence of the characters rather than replicating their physical
appearances. Both Joey and Aki emphasised the role of Eiichiro Oda, the original creator of One Piece, who
supervised the project closely.
Joey discussed how live-action adaptations often face the challenge of capturing the essence of the original anime.
He cited “Fullmetal Alchemist” as an example where the film’s creators attempted to replicate characters’ physical
appearances, leading to a result that felt more like cosplay. This overemphasis on visual accuracy detracts from the
storytelling.
The discussion then shifted to “Cowboy Bebop,” and Aki shared her thoughts on the casting choices. She praised John
Cho’s portrayal of Spike Spiegel, highlighting that, while the character’s age in the anime was 27, the maturity and
depth of the character made the casting work. Joey emphasised that the core issue with “Cowboy Bebop” was more
in its storytelling and writing than the casting or visual elements.
Balancing Creative Endeavours
The interview concluded with a question directed at Aki
about her True Crime series (On the Case – Detective Aki),
which represents a departure from her usual content. Aki
expressed her enjoyment of creating these videos, even
though they required extensive research and often dealt
with disturbing subject matter. She found exploring the
darker side of Japan intriguing, as it showcased a side of
the country that often goes unreported and unexplored.
The interview with Joey, the Anime Man, and Aki Dearest
provided valuable insights into the world of anime
adaptations, the challenges of international anime
distribution, balancing creative endeavours, and the
exploration of darker themes in the Japanese context. It
showcased the passion and dedication of content creators
like Joey in their quest to promote and appreciate the
diverse world of anime.
Joey also highlighted the significance of seeking
assistance from a team of editors, videographers, and
even a personal assistant. This support allowed him to
focus on what he was most passionate about while
maintaining a work-life balance. He stressed the
importance of asking for help when necessary.
