Automated Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Trucks
Section 1
Executive Summary
1.1 Market Overview
For many years, advances in automated driving technology have received
significant media attention, particularly in the light-duty vehicle (LDV) segment.
Generally, these technologies enable drivers to remove their hands from the
wheel, and, in some cases, their eyes from the road. Recent developments have
focused on robotaxis, rideshare vehicles that operate without a driver or
sometimes, without a safety monitor in the front seat.
Less attention has been paid to automated driving in the medium- and
heavy-duty (MHD) trucking sector, a market with the potential for substantial
growth in the coming decades. MHD trucks operate within simpler operational
design domains (ODDs) and generate more revenue per vehicle than robotaxis.
This industry, which is primed for transformation, faces persistent driver
shortages, creating opportunities for automation to address supply chain
disruptions.
1.2 Scope
This report evaluates the potential sales and revenues of MHD trucks that are
capable of operating without continuous supervision, potentially through their
entire routes. Their gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) is greater than
10,000 pounds/4,536 kilograms. The analysis covers both medium-duty trucks,
whose GVWR is between 10,000 and 26,000 pounds/4,536 and 11,793 kilograms,
and heavy-duty trucks whose GVWR is greater than 26,000 pounds/11,793
kilograms. It also includes on-road and off-road use cases for autonomous
technologies.
1.3 Market Forecasts
Multiple developers are piloting automated truck driving software, primarily in the
U.S. and China, with smaller pilots elsewhere (e.g., Europe and the Middle East.)
While some tests operate without a human in the vehicle, many retain a safety
observer. Current pilot projects generate minimal revenue, though significant
market growth is expected toward the end of the forecast period.

Automated Medium-Duty and Heavy-Duty Trucks
Guidehouse Research anticipates that global sales of hands-off/eyes-off (i.e.,
automated) MHD trucks will only mature toward the end of the forecast period,
reaching approximately 36,000 units by 2034, with China accounting for nearly
one-third of the market due to rapid growth and favorable regulatory conditions.

Section 9
Scope of Study
This Guidehouse Research report examines the development and deployment of hands-
off/eyes-off (automated) driving technology in the MHD trucking industry. It explores the key
factors motivating fleet managers to automate more of their routes, as well as the market
barriers that are slowing the full rollout of automated driving systems.
The report also analyzes the current structure of the automated trucking value chain and
provides a forecast for how that structure is expected to evolve as commercialization
progresses. Sales forecasts are presented based on market dynamics and insights gathered
through interviews with industry stakeholders. These forecasts are segmented by vehicle class
(medium-duty and heavy-duty) and by use case (off-road and on-road applications). Revenue
forecasts (2025-2034) are provided for both vehicle classes and segmented by eight
geographical regions.

Notes
CAGR refers to compound annual growth rate, using the formula:
CAGR = (End Year Value ÷ Start Year Value)(1/steps)1.
CAGRs presented in the tables are for the entire timeframe in the title. Where data for fewer
years are given, the CAGR is for the range presented. Where relevant, CAGRs for shorter
timeframes may be given as well.
Figures are based on the best estimates available at the time of calculation. Annual revenue,
shipments, and sales are based on end-of-year figures unless otherwise noted. All values are
expressed in year 2025 US dollars unless otherwise noted. Percentages may not add up to
100 due to rounding.
