INTRODUCTION
The main goal of the article is an aempt to answer questions such as: [1] is the introduction of English
language internal policies important for beer functioning of the company?, [2] What areas of the
company’s operations can be changed [optimized] by surfacing English language as an ocial business
language, [3] How does the unication of business communication by means of English change the
company’s operating concept [s]? so it shall lead to a nal conclusion how should such business concept
be perceived?
The role of English language in enhancing business international competitiveness is a topic that has
received considerable aention in the literature [Neeley, 2012]. English is widely recognized as the lingua
franca of global communication, especially in the elds of science and technology [Brannen, Piekarri,
Tiee, 2014], also namely depicted as the dominant global language of business and technology [Crystal,
1997] which nowadays has become essential. However, the extent to which English prociency aects
business competitiveness of companies in dierent contexts and markets is still a maer of debate [Lee,
2012]. This theory-based review [Paul & Criado 2020] aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the
main theories, methods, and ndings on this topic, as well as to identify the gaps and limitations in the
existing research. The literature review is organized into two main chapters: the rst chapter focuses
on the theoretical frameworks that explain the relationship between English language and business
competitiveness; the second chapter reviews the empirical studies that have tested and measured this
relationship in various seings and regions.
THEORETICAL FRAMEWORKS
The literature on the role of English language in enhancing business competitiveness can be broadly
divided into two main perspectives: the economic & managerial perspective and the sociolinguistic
perspective. The economic perspective views English as a human capital asset that can increase the
productivity, eciency, and innovation of businesses [Hagan, Wassink, 2016, Meli, 2016, Ku, Zussman,
2016]. The sociolinguistic perspective views English as a social and cultural resource that can facilitate
communication, collaboration, and knowledge transfer among professionals and stakeholders across
linguistic and cultural boundaries [Coleman, 2010, Wedell, 2013]. Both perspectives have their merits
and limitations, and they often complement each other in explaining the complex and dynamic nature
of business competitiveness. In this chapter, we will review some of the most inuential theories from
both perspectives, as well as their implications.
The signicance of possessing procient English language skills is widely acknowledged as a highly
advantageous characteristic for individuals and increasingly pivotal for a nation’s economic progress
[Kossoudji, 1988]. However, it is essential to scrutinize the underlying basis of these assumptions. At its
core, the ability to eectively communicate in English is now considered indispensable for a country’s
active engagement in the globalized economy. It functions as a gateway for individuals to obtain
knowledge, acquire crucial skills, secure employment prospects, and facilitate upward mobility within
society [Lee, 2012].
As a result, governments, educational institutions, and ministries around the world are bolstering
their investments in English language education to maximize the economic, social, cultural, and political
dividends associated with linguistic competence. This strategic allocation of resources is substantiated
by the recognition that English has aained the status of a universal language, thereby oering economic
value through employment opportunities and entrepreneurial pursuits. Furthermore, it engenders
a myriad of socio-cultural and political benets by enabling international mobility and fostering eective
intercultural communication. Nevertheless, in order for governments to justify substantial allocations
140 Rafał Czarnecki
towards English language education, it is imperative to present comprehensive evidence that substantiates
the multifaceted advantages it o ers [Ku, Zussman, 2010].
In terms of economic drivers, it is important to remind that English language is taken into
consideration upon some factors as described in Fig. 1 below.
Figure 1. Own elaboration based on Ku & Zussman, 2010

THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC PERSPECTIVE
The socio-economic perspective on the role of English language in enhancing business competitiveness
assumes that English pro ciency can improve the human capital of businesses and workers, and thus
increase their economic returns [Ku & Zussman, 2010]. Human capital refers to the skills, knowledge, and
abilities that individuals possess and can use to produce goods and services [Becker, 1964]. According
to this perspective, English is a valuable skill that can enhance the employability, mobility, and income
of workers, as well as the performance, innovation, and market access of variety of businesses [Chin,
Mehtabul, Prakash, 2013]. Some of the main theories that support this perspective are: Signaling Theory
[Spence, 1973], Network Theory [Granove er, 1973; Powell, Grodall],
The signaling theory suggests that English pro ciency can serve as a signal of quality and competence
for businesses in the global market. According to this theory, employers use English pro ciency as
a screening device to select the most quali ed candidates for jobs, especially when other indicators of
quality are di cult or costly to observe [Spence, 1973]. Similarly, customers use English pro ciency as
a cue to infer the reliability and reputation of businesses, especially when other information about their
products or services is scarce or ambiguous [Akkarathanakul, 2021]. Therefore, English pro ciency can
increase the chances of ge ing hired or a racting customers for workers and  rms, respectively.
MANAGERIAL PERSPECTIVE
This perspective highlights the importance of e ective communication in fostering business relationships,
collaborating with international partners, and ensuring successful project management in a global context.
In the globalized industry, e ective knowledge exchange is critical for innovation and maintaining
competitiveness. In such a scope the English language serves as a vital medium for sharing and disseminating
knowledge among professionals worldwide [Welch, Welch, Piekarri, 2005].
In other words, the English language supports knowledge exchange within the global market. Research
and development e orts heavily rely on collaboration and the sharing of ideas and expertise [Amin
& Shahid, 2013]. English pro ciency enables professionals to access and contribute to a vast pool of
information available in English, such as scienti c papers, research  ndings, and technical documentation.
141Selected Theories and Concepts of Language Internal Policies in Enhancing Business Competitiveness...
This unrestricted access to knowledge enhances the innovation potential of many companies, enabling
them to stay at the forefront of technological advancements and gain business competitiveness [Canestrino,
2022].
English prociency is essential for companies seeking to penetrate international markets. By communicating
eectively with clients, partners, and stakeholders in English, these companies can establish credibility,
build trust, and meet the diverse needs of their global customer base. English prociency also facilitates the
negotiation and implementation of international contracts and agreements, enabling companies to navigate
complex legal and business landscapes with ease [Garrouste, 2008; Grin, 1999; Ahuja, Chucherd, Pootrakool,
2006, PISA 2025 Foreign Language Assessment Framework].
In an industry where talent is a key driver of success, English prociency becomes an asset for
international businesses [Roshid, 2018]. English language skills act as a prerequisite for aracting and
retaining top talent, as many professionals prioritize working in environments where English is the
primary means of communication. Companies that can oer an English-friendly work environment
gain a competitive edge in aracting global talent, fostering diversity, and fostering a collaborative
and innovative corporate culture [Coleman, 2010; Zhang, Grenier, 2013; Hussain et al. 2016]. The
signicance of language in the context of international business achievements and shortcomings is
frequently disregarded. Despite the commonly held belief that language plays a crucial role in conducting
international business, there exists a paucity of research specically dedicated to exploring the role of
language in multinational management. The inherent disparities in language are commonly accepted
without due scrutiny, despite the collective acknowledgment of its signicance [Marschan, Welch, &
Welch, 1997]. In compliance with Welch et al. [2005] concede that insucient research continues to be
conducted in this domain, despite its immense importance and relevance to the success of international
business endeavors [Storozum, 2013].
In addition to its role in knowledge exchange, English prociency oers several other advantages in
business [Spolsky, 1998]. For instance:
• I.CollaborationonInternationalProjects: English prociency enables professionals to collaborate
seamlessly on international projects. It facilitates eective communication, coordination, and
cooperation among team members located in dierent countries and time zone. This aspect
is particularly crucial in globally distributed software development projects, where ecient
communication and coordination are key to project success [Ljungbo, 2010].
• AI.AccesstoGlobalOpportunities: English language skills open doors to global opportunities
for professionals. Many multinational companies require employees to have a certain level
of English prociency, and prociency in English can signicantly expand career prospects
[Neeley, 2012]. It enables professionals to work in diverse teams, contribute to international
projects, and pursue employment opportunities in various countries.
• BI.NetworkingandProfessionalDevelopment: English prociency facilitates networking
and professional development in business. Professionals who can communicate eectively in
English have broader access to industry events, conferences, and networking platforms where
they can connect with experts, share knowledge, and build professional relationships [CG Lee,
2012].
While English language prociency oers numerous benets, there are also challenges associated
with it i.e. professionals whose rst language is not English may face initial language barriers, which
can aect their condence in expressing ideas and engaging in discussions [Miller, Johnson, 2022],
English is a dynamic language, with unfamiliar terms, expressions, and trends emerging regularly.
Professionals need to engage in continuous learning and skill development to stay updated and maintain
their language prociency [Brooker, 2018], language and culture are deeply intertwined. Professionals
must develop cultural sensitivity and awareness to eectively navigate cross-cultural communication
challenges [Ginsburgh & Weber, 2016].

SWOT ANALYSIS
To conduct a comprehensive review of the potential impact of the implementation of an internal English
language policy on the competitiveness and internationalization of business processes, a SWOT analysis
can be used as a valuable tool to assess the strategic implications and guide corporate decision-making
processes. According to state of the art and basing on the analysis, it is possible to identify the key aspects
of a company’s business if it decides to implement a language policy involving the introduction of an
o cial language in the organization, i.e., in this case English. This type of decision, based on the SWOT
analysis conducted, leads to the following conclusions, which are presented visually in the chart below.
Rysunek 2. Analiza SWOT – opracowanie własne
Figure 2. SWOT Analysis – own elaboration
Based on the analyzed literature, personal experiences, and the proposed SWOT analysis, it can be
asserted that the implementation of an English-language internal policy within a company is associated
with various strengths and weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, which are pivotal factors in enhancing
the competitiveness of the  rm and promoting internationalization.
Adopting a policy in the English language serves as a cornerstone for improved communication within the
organization, supporting transparency and collaboration among employees across di erent departments
and geographic locations. Embracing English as the o cial business language grants companies access
to a global audience, enabling them to more e ectively participate in international markets. Pro ciency in the
English language provides a competitive advantage, facilitating seamless engagement with stakeholders,
negotiation of agreements, and navigation of intercultural contexts. Furthermore, unambiguous language
policies aid in a racting international talents, thereby enriching the workforce with diverse perspectives
and skills. Additionally, standardizing English as the primary language streamlines operations, ensuring
coherence and e ciency in processes.
Despite the bene ts, the introduction of an English language policy may encounter resistance and
challenges within the organization. Employees who are not pro cient in English may encounter
communication barriers, leading to misunderstandings and ine ciencies. Moreover, imposing English
as the o cial language may lead to the erosion of local cultures and cultural tensions among employees.
The costs associated with providing English language training and potential impacts on employee
morale further underscore the implementation challenges. Additionally, navigating the complexity of
implementing language policies across di erent departments and locations necessitates careful planning
and resources.
143Selected Theories and Concepts of Language Internal Policies in Enhancing Business Competitiveness...
Adopting English language principles presents numerous opportunities for rms seeking to expand
their market reach and drive business development. Prociency in the English language opens doors
to new markets and expansion avenues, strengthening the company’s competitive position. Moreover,
a common language fosters innovation and knowledge exchange among employees, leading to creative
solutions and increased competitiveness. Companies can leverage English language prociency
to establish strategic partnerships and collaborations, thereby enhancing their market presence and
reputation. Furthermore, excellent communication in English enhances the company’s brand image,
increasing credibility and aracting stakeholders.
Despite its merits, implementing an English language policy also poses certain threats and challenges.
Companies risk lagging behind competitors who leverage English language prociency, leading
to competitive pressure and unfavorable market conditions. Additionally, navigating legal and
regulatory requirements concerning language policies may entail legal risks and obligations. Resistance
from stakeholders, including employees, unions, and local communities, may further complicate the
implementation process, potentially leading to internal conicts and reputation loss. Moreover, excessive
emphasis on the English language may lead to the loss of cultural identity within the organization,
employee alienation, and weakening cohesion. Furthermore, communication gaps resulting from
language barriers may result in errors, conicts, and missed opportunities, posing signicant risks
to business operations.
In summary, a comprehensive understanding of the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities, and
threats associated with implementing internal policies in the English language is essential for rms
aiming to enhance their competitiveness and achieve eective internationalization. Through a thorough
assessment of these factors, companies can develop a strategic approach to leveraging language policy as
a catalyst for growth and success in the global market.
FINAL CONCLUSIONS
In conclusion, the English language plays a pivotal role in enhancing the international competitiveness
of business. From an economic perspective, English prociency opens doors to global market
opportunities, knowledge exchange, and talent acquisition. Managerially, English enables eective
communication, collaboration, and the establishment of strong business relationships. Understanding
the economic and managerial implications of English language prociency in a global economic context
is crucial for businesses to thrive in the global marketplace. This research has shed light on these aspects
and provided valuable insights for professionals, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. As it was
mentioned before English is widely recognized as the lingua franca of the modern world, especially
in the elds of science, technology, business, and education. According to Crystal [1997], English has
become the global language because of several historical, political, economic, and cultural factors, such
as the expansion of British colonialism, the emergence of the United States as a superpower, the spread
of mass media and communication technologies, and the increasing globalization and interdependence
of nations. As a result, English is now spoken by about 1.75 billion people as a rst, second, or foreign
language [Neeley, 2012].
The role of English is particularly prominent in the development of information, communication,
and technology [ICT], which is one of the key drivers of the industrial revolution 4.0. Surya et al. [2021]
argue that English is essential for accessing and sharing information and knowledge in ICT, as most
sources and references such as scientic reports and journals are wrien in English. Moreover, English
is also necessary for communicating and collaborating with other professionals and stakeholders across
dierent countries and cultures. Therefore, English prociency is a crucial skill for variety of companies
to gain competitive advantage in the global market. Using English as a common language not only in
ICT industry can bring many benets for both individuals and organizations. For individuals, being
procient in English can enhance their employability, career prospects, professional development,
and personal growth. For organizations, adopting English as a corporate language can facilitate
communication and coordination across geographically diverse functions and business endeavors,
144 Rafał Czarnecki
improve organizational performance and innovation, and increase customer satisfaction and loyalty
[Neeley, 2012].
However, using English in various industries also poses some challenges and diculties for both
individuals and organizations. For individuals, learning and using English can be a stressful and demanding
process that requires time, eort, motivation, and support. One may also face linguistic and cultural
barriers that hinder their eective participation and contribution in English-mediated interactions. For
organizations, implementing English as a corporate language can entail signicant costs and risks such as
resistance from employees, loss of local identity and diversity, miscommunication and misunderstanding,
and legal and ethical issues [Neeley, 2012].
To summarize the paper is an aempt of a comprehensive examination of the role of the English
language in enhancing business competitiveness and internationalization. Drawing nal conclusions
from this analysis, several key points emerge: Signicance of English Language where the English
language holds immense importance in modern business environments, serving as a crucial tool for
communication, collaboration, and knowledge exchange on a global scale. Its widespread adoption
is driven by economic, social, cultural, and political factors, making it indispensable for individuals
and businesses. From the economic standpoint the English prociency contributes to increased
productivity, eciency, and innovation within businesses where it serves as a human capital asset,
enabling individuals and organizations to access global markets, aract international talent, and
capitalize on opportunities for expansion and advancement.
On the other hand, from managerial level the English prociency facilitates eective communication,
collaboration, and relationship-building in multicultural seings. It streamlines operations, enhances
innovation potential, and strengthens competitive positioning by enabling companies to engage with
stakeholders, negotiate agreements, and navigate international landscapes more eciently.
In conclusion, based on SWOT analysis it is revealed both the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities,
and threats associated with implementing English language policies within organizations. While such
policies oer benets such as improved communication, global market access, and talent acquisition,
they also pose challenges such as cultural tensions, implementation costs, and communication barriers.
Despite the challenges, the overall consensus suggests that embracing English as a corporate language
can yield signicant advantages for businesses seeking to thrive in the global marketplace. However,
careful planning, investment, and sensitivity to cultural and linguistic diversity are essential to mitigate
risks and maximize benets.
Based on the analysis and interpretation of this paper, it is possible to address the three questions
posed in the beginning of the paper, that is

coherence in processes through standardized communication practices, facilitating the company’s
participation in the global market, enabling it to compete more eectively on an international scale,
encouraging cultural integration and diversity within the organization by promoting a common
language for communication, fostering a culture of innovation by enabling knowledge exchange
and collaboration among employees from diverse backgrounds, providing the company with
a competitive edge by enhancing its ability to navigate international landscapes, establish strategic
partnerships, and meet the needs of a global customer base.
FUTURE RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the insights provided in the paper, it is possible to draw some potential possibilities and chances
for the future in a way of scientic recommendations for future research on the topic of the role of the
English language in enhancing business competitiveness. Further investigation how the implementation
of English language policies inuences organizational culture, including the preservation of local identities,
promotion of diversity, and management of cultural tensions within multinational corporations shall be
conducted. The results open possibility to undertake longitudinal studies to assess the long-term eects
of English prociency on business performance metrics such as revenue growth, market expansion,
and innovation output, across various industries and geographic regions. It gives possibility to explore
eective cross-cultural communication strategies within English-mediated business environments,
including the development of cultural sensitivity training programs and communication tools tailored
to diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. From strictly economic point of view, it is highly necessary
to conduct cost-benet analyses to evaluate the return on investment of English language training
programs for employees, considering factors such as improved productivity, enhanced collaboration,
and increased market competitiveness.
Last but not least technology and language integration assumptions to examine the role of technology
in facilitating language integration within multinational corporations, including the use of translation
software, language learning platforms, and virtual communication tools to bridge linguistic barriers and
enhance business communication.
