In this chapter, the narrative unfolds with Rowena, a young
seeress, aboard a ship led by the Ventrian merchant
Kabuchek. The ship has just left Mashrapur, and Kabuchek
reflects on his past and his infatuation with Rowena’s
namesake, all while he notices two Drenai warriors tending
to the wounded. Rowena, upset about her husband Druss,
believes he will follow her and worries about their future.
Kabuchek, who has been struck by Rowena's talent, reveals
his cruel tendencies and the dynamics of control in their
relationship.
Meanwhile, Sieben, an aspiring poet, is encountered waiting
at a place where the Old Woman receives clients for
assassinations. He learns about the fate of his friend Druss,
who is deeply wounded from a recent conflict but is healing.
Sieben’s concern for Druss drives him to seek help from a
local healer, who informs Sieben that Druss's life hangs in
balance due to an infection and a fading will to live since
Rowena was sold into slavery.
Druss himself is depicted in a strife-filled struggle as he
drags himself toward Rowena, battling his physical wounds
and the notion of failure in rescuing her. His determination
highlights his unyielding nature, embodying the very idea of
a hero despite the overwhelming odds against him.
