Rainbow Rowell's "Slow Dance" is an exquisite portrayal of love, friendship, and the
enduring power of connection. Set against the backdrop of North Omaha, the story
follows Shiloh and Cary, childhood best friends whose lives took unexpected turns.
Rainbow masterfully weaves together past and present, unraveling their intertwined
history with tender nostalgia and raw emotion. Shiloh, now in her thirties and grappling
with a life vastly different from her teenage dreams, finds herself unexpectedly reunited
with Cary at a friend's wedding. What unfolds is a poignant exploration of second
chances and the complexities of growing up.
The characters are beautifully nuanced, each carrying their regrets and hopes, yet united
by a bond that time couldn't erase. Rainbow Rowell's prose is heartfelt and evocative,
effortlessly capturing the bittersweet essence of missed opportunities and rediscovered
love.
"Slow Dance" is not just a romance story; it's a testament to the enduring strength of
friendship and the resilience of the human heart. Rainbow Rowell invites readers on a
nostalgic journey, reminding us that sometimes, the most meaningful dances are the ones
that take us back to where it all began.
My top recommendation is Assistant to the
Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer. From the
start, I was captivated by the characters,
especially the dynamic between Evie Sage
and the Villain—it made for such an
entertaining read! Even the blurb is intriguing
and draws you in:
ASSISTANT WANTED: A notorious, high-ranking
villain seeks a loyal, level-headed assistant
for unspecified office tasks, supporting staff
in random mayhem, terror, and other Dark
Things. In General—discretion is required.
Excellent benefits.
Their witty banter kept each chapter lively,
and the mystery surrounding the “bad” guy
had me eagerly turning pages. I don’t want to
spoil anything, but I promise you’ll thoroughly
enjoy this book!

AUTHOR: HANNAH NICOLE MAEHRER
One of the summer’s latest books I loved was The Glassmaker
by Tracy Chevalier. The story takes place with the Russo family
in 1486 on the island of Murano near Venice with the main
focus being on Orsola Rosso the eldest daughter in a family of
glassblowers. Chevalier started out in 1486 and ends the story
in the present time and uniquely plays with the concept of
time. Time plays a vital role in the story, and time passes
differently for the people of Venice and Murano than for
everyone else on the continent. What I loved about this novel
is that it shows how artisan families survived on their crafts
and the importance of women in the history of glass making,
especially with glass beads from the Rosetta bead to seed
beads made and strung up by women called impiraressa.
Chevalier weaves fictional characters alongside historical
figures from Maria Barovier, the inventor of the Rosetta bead,
Josephine Bonaparte, and the Marchesa Luisa Casati. Readers
are pulled into a world where the concept of time stops and
focuses on the love and losses of the women of one family
through the centuries. Venetian glass-making was heavily
guarded, and there were periods when glassmakers who left
the island to move to other parts of Italy or Europe were
executed to protect the secrets of the trade. If you like glass
figurines, glass beads, or crafts in general, you would like this
novel and be intrigued by the process of making glass and
how intense it is to work with glass. Orsola Rosso is a strong,
independent woman who fights for herself and her passions,
while Chevalier tells the history of glass-making and Venice
through Orsola.
