Three Views of Gettysburg is a unique look at the history and legacy of one of the pivotal battles of the Civil War. Told through
three books authored by Bruce Mowday, the talk begins with the examination of the Union defense of Pickett’s Charge, an
often-untold story.
Some of the illustrations for the book came from the J. Howard Wert collection, the largest private collection of artifacts of
Gettysburg. The middle section of the talk will examine historic artifacts, including the podium used by Abraham Lincoln for his
Gettysburg Address. Mowday will describe what it was like to stand behind that podium and his feelings about having an
opportunity to touch other such historic items. For those who saw the movie Lincoln, Thaddeus Stevens was depicted with a
walking stick and Bruce walked with the real one owned by Stevens. Bruce’s ancestors fought with General Barlow and Bruce
had a chance to see and touch Barlow’s e saddle and wondered if his ancestors had a chance to touch that same saddle. The
middle section will cover the Wert family, friends of Stevens. J. Howard Wert was a spy and scout at Gettysburg.
The third view ties in the history and legacy of Gettysburg. One reader said the book “redefines” Gettysburg. Bruce wrote
essays to go with 20 original paintings by noted artist Karl J. Kuerner, the only artist personally taught by Andrew Wyeth and
his sister Caroline. Wyeth is considered by many as the best American painter of the 20th century.
