THE DEMAND
FOR PURIFIED
WATER
WATER SHOPS ARE HOT!
According to Entrepreneur Magazine which noted this in their popular “Whats Hot
section.
Water Shops are the new waves of the future. The water industry is a multi-billion
-dollar market worldwide and increasing. Why? We will tell you why. Businesses are
making lots of money. They have discovered that water is their liquid gold.
WATER SUPPLY ACCESS AND QUALITY IS AT RISK
People do not like the taste of tap water, and even worse, are getting sick from tap
water.
Every day we hear stories about E.coli leaching into local water supplies.
Worldwide 3.4 million people die each year from drinking contaminated water.
It is known that harmful chemicals and pharmaceuticals hide in our local tap water
and the situation is not improving.
The private sector has taken it into their own hands to assist with what the
government cannot afford to do which is supplying men, women and children with
pure, affordable drinking water.
WHAT IS A WATER SHOP?
The Water Shop or Water Store nowadays is a
full-service retail outlet that offers local
customers purified drinking water and water
associated products. Water Stores provide
service and quality drinking water at a price
much less than delivered bottled water or
bottled water that you purchase in a
supermarket. Water Shops also sell other related
water products such as ice and various sizes of
water bottles, dispensers, coolers and some
water shops even sell POU “Point of Use” water
filters and equipment for domestic water
purification. Throughout the world we are seeing
Water Shops as they should be, a “mini water
plant” that provides needed pure drinking
water to their local communities.
BOTTLED WATER IN
SOUTH AFRICA
THE HISTORY OF BOTTLED WATER IN SOUTH AFRICA
The first bottled water bottled commercially in South Africa was
bottled in the early 1800's at the Van Riebeek plant in Cape
Town. The water came from Albion Springs, which is the
strongest flowing of the springs at the base of Table Mountain.
The plant was then bought by South African Breweries and
eventually became part of Cape Town's municipal water supply.
South Africa's modern natural mineral water bottling industry is
only 18 years old and, by comparison with its 37-year-old
European and American counterparts.
South Africans drink over 500 million liters of purified bottled
water per year and is a growing industry exceeding a billion-rand
turnover.
In 1997 he bottled water industrys first governing body, the
South African Natural Bottled Water Association (SANBWA) was
created, to regulate standards for the industry aimed at ensuring
the production and distribution of safe, pure, good tasting water.
ENVIRONMENTAL STATUS
Requirements by law are that all-natural mineral bottled water comes
from an underground source or spring that cannot be contaminated
or polluted, most of these sources are found in rural areas, where the
environment is cleaner than in cities, and are strictly tested for quality
and safety of the water.
The surrounding environment of a natural mineral bottling plant must
be kept clean and safe by the bottler.
Industry leading water purification technologies such as reverse
osmosis, UV Sterilization, Activated Carbon and many more, have
allowed drinking water bottling from various water sources possible
in any location.
Looking at water usage, the total water usage of the South African
bottled water industry in a year, for the entire production and
processes such as rinsing of bottles and filling equipment.
This would not irrigate more than about 9 hectares of agricultural
land. The industrys 500 million liters can be calculated to 742 cubic
meters per day, whereas 1 hectare of irrigated land requires
approximately 60 to 80 cubic meters per day depending on the type of
crop being irrigated.
It is from these figures that it has been determined that bottled water
is a more financially rewarding use of water. It also creates more
employment per liter of water than any other use of water.
WATER SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
The South Africa National Bottled Water Association protects the consumer by taking several steps imposed on water plants with
comprehensive and detailed infrastructural and procedural requirements, based on enhancements of the European Industry standards. An in
depth, annual, documented test of facilities, including the water source and product water. The mineral content as well as the origin of the
water should be presented in store and on bottle labels, following the industries standard guidelines assures consumers that their water meets
quality and health standards.
PURIFIED BOTTLED WATER MARKET
Bottled water by the consumer is viewed as more than just water but as a health drink. Purified drinking water consumption is lifestyle related
and statistics have shown that the two biggest markets for bottled water currently are Gauteng, where the South African health and lifestyle
industry has its biggest footprint, and Cape Town, where tourists have a seasonal impact on sales of bottled water. Restaurants account for 17%
of bottled water sales, with retail outlets accounting for 51% and wholesalers 14%. Sales through water shops and self-service stations inside
stores are growing rapidly and account for 18% of bottled water sales. About 75% of the mineral water consumed in South Africa is still, and
70% is unflavoured- although the flavoured market is growing rapidly.
PREPARED WATER GUIDELINES
Prepared water is defined as bottled water that has undergone treatment(s) acceptable for bottled waters and may originate from any type of
water supply such as environmental sources and municipal sources.
HOW CAN PREPARED WATER BE PROCESSED?
According to legislation prepared waters should be subjected to disinfection or anti-microbial treatment and any treatment methods that
modify the physicochemical characteristics of the original water if the end quality complies with all the legal provisions for all bottled waters.
Bottle labelling of prepared water must stipulate that it is prepared water, the treatment methods declared as well as the source of water with
the phrase “from a public or private distribution system” if the water was indeed supplied by such source. The difference between prepared
water and natural water is solely that prepared water can be treated and modified by various means. All these treated waters are grouped in
one category. Natural water must be potable at source whereas prepared water is treated to ensure that its potable. Due to the various sources
of prepared water, quality regulations include the absence of heavy metals and classified toxic compounds such as mercury, cyanide and
pesticides. These requirements also pertain to natural mineral water. Each water purification technology is targeted at the removal of a specific
type of contaminant, a good designed water purification system uses a combination of technologies to achieve a specific water quality.
