Abstract
Ithasbeenfourhundredyearssincethehundred‐foldnovel"JourneytotheWest"was
publishedintheMingDynasty.Thispapertriestodescribetheresearchtopicsand
propositionsof"JourneytotheWest"inthepastfortyyearsfromthethematicaspect.As
animportantpartoftheculturalstudyof"JourneytotheWest"inmodernChina,the
hundred‐foldnovel"JourneytotheWest"hasaccumulatedaseriesofimportant
achievementsinthestudyoftheliteraryworksof"JourneytotheWest"andformeda
relativelycompleteacademicsystem.Anditisinastateofinclusivedevelopment.From
theperspectiveofacademicresearch,manyfocicondensedbecausetheirtheoretical
logicandobjectcharacteristicsareconcentrated.Thus,thispapermainlyfocuseson
severalpropositions,includingresearchontheauthorandversionofthehundred‐fold
novel"JourneytotheWest",researchonthethemeandcultureof"JourneytotheWest",
researchonthecharactersin"JourneytotheWest",researchonimagesandmuralsin
"JourneytotheWest",researchonthelegendof"JourneytotheWest",researchonthe
overseasdisseminationof"JourneytotheWest",etc.Therefore,itcanbeseenthatthe
currentacademicresearchon"JourneytotheWest"isinaperiodofprosperity.

1. Introduction
Theoriginorinitialplotoftheculturalstudyof"JourneytotheWest"isthetruestoryofTang
Xuanzang'sjourneytotheWesternRegionstolearnscriptures.Accordingtohistoricalrecords,
theearliesttext"TheRecordoftheWesternRegionsoftheTangDynasty"wasadocumentary
workrecordedbyXuanzang'sdisciplesafterhisreturnfromthestudyofBuddhistscriptures,
followingtheedictofEmperorTaizongoftheTangDynasty,andpersonallydictatingit.This
bookdescribedindetailthemountainsandrivers,history,andcustomsofvariouscountriesin
theWesternRegionsthatXuanzangexperienced.Later,Xuanzang'sdiscipleHuiliandothers
addedalotofliterarycolorto"TheBiographyofSanzangMasterinDaci'enTempleoftheTang
Dynasty".OneistostrengthentheimagedescriptionofXuanzang'slife;theotheristoaddsome
religiousmythsandhistoricallegends.Inthisway,thestoryofXuanzang'sstudyofscriptures
graduallybrokethroughthetruth,leavingthemonasteryandenteringthesociety.This
promptedthetransformationofthetruestoryofXuanzang'sstudyofscripturesintomythsand
legends,whichwerecontinuouslyspreadtothepublic.
Intheprocessofcompletingthehundred‐foldnovel"JourneytotheWest"oftheMingDynasty,
"ThePoetryoftheTangDynastySanzang"wasakeywork.Thispoemhasseventeenstanzas.
Althoughthenarrationofthestoryisrelativelybrief,theplotiscompleteandself‐contained,
anditisverylikelytobeascriptoffolkoralcommunicationthatbeganwiththe"populartalk"
intheTangDynasty.IntheYuanDynasty,"SimpleWordsofJourneytotheWest"appeared.It's
originalhasbeenlost,butwecanreadfragmentsofstoriessuchas"KillingtheJingheRiver

DragonintheDream","FightingtheSageintheChechiKingdom",andotherstoryclipsfrom
the"YongleDadian"andtheancientChinesetextbookinKorean"ParkTongShiProverbs".It
canbeseenthatthisisclosetothestorylineofthenovel"JourneytotheWest"intheMing
Dynasty.
Thenovelformof"JourneytotheWest"wasfirstseeninWuChengen'shundred‐fold"Journey
totheWest"intheMingDynasty,withouttheauthor'ssignature.Thisnovelisbasedonthe
historicaleventof"TangSeng'sacquisitionofscriptures",anditdeeplydepictsthesocialreality
atthattimethroughtheauthor'sartisticprocessing.Thewholebookmainlydescribesthatafter
SunWukongwasbornandmadebighavocintheHeavenlyPalace,hemetTangSeng,ZhuBajie,
andShaSeng,andtraveledwesttolearnscriptures,conquereddemons,andsubdueddemons
alltheway,wentthroughhardships,arrivedinthewesttoseeTathagataBuddha,andfinally
becomeimmortals.In"HistoryofChineseFiction",XunLusaidthat"JourneytotheWest"isa
novel of Chinese gods and monsters. "Journey to the West" is a classic of Chinese mythical
novels,reachingthepinnacleofancientromanticnovels.TogetherwithRomanceoftheThree
Kingdoms,WaterMargin,andA DreamofRedMansions,itis alsoknownastheFourGreat
ClassicalNovelsofChina.
2. TheResearchFieldof"JourneytotheWest"
Fromtheearly1920stothepresent,theresearchon"JourneytotheWest"hasgonethrougha
course of 100 years. From the perspective of academic research, it mainly focuses on the
followingpropositions:
2.1. ResearchontheAuthorandVersionof"JourneytotheWest"
Atpresent,amongthosepaperswithreservations,doubts,orevennegativeattitudestowards
theauthorofthenovel"JourneytotheWest"byChengenWu,thestrengthofrefutationisfar
greaterthanthatofargumentation.Becausenoverystrongdocumentaryevidencehasbeen
foundtoexplaintheauthorofthenovel,thefinalsolutionofthisissuedependsonthediscovery
ofnewhistoricaldata.Intheversionstudy,themainproblemsfocusonthetwoaspectsofthe
successfulrelationshipbetweenthetraditionalversionandthesimplifiedversion.Amongthem,
Fan Li's master's thesis "Mr. Zhuowu Li Criticizes Journey to the West" shows that Li's
commentaryisthefirstrelativelymaturecommentaryof"JourneytotheWest".Thestrengths
ofitsedition,text,illustrations,andcommentarymakeLi'scommentaryanexcellentversionof
"JourneytotheWest".Onceitwaspublished,itbecamepopularandwaswidelydistributedin
thelateMingandQingdynasties.ShunzhongLou'sresearchon"JourneytotheWestRecords",
aftercarefulcollationandcomparisoninthetext,cametotheconclusionthattheoriginal
version of "Journey to the West Records" was "The True Interpretation of the Westward
Journey".MiaoWang's"SupplementaryRecordofJourneytotheWest"isatransformationof
"Journey to the West". The article starts from four aspects: theme, content, expression
technique,andtheimageofthemaincharacter,SunWukong,toelaboratethetransformation
of"JourneytotheWest"by"SupplementaryRecordofJourneytotheWest".Thisconfirmsthe
artisticvalueof"SupplementaryRecordofJourneytotheWest"inmanyfairytalesandsequels.
HongwangZhang's"Researchon Yang Jingxian and drama Journey to the West", the text of
JingxianYang andhisdrama"Journeyto theWest"is theresearchobjectofthispaper.The
authorcollectsandorganizesseveralexistingversionsandconductsin‐depthinterpretation
andresearchontheinnovativestructureandsystemofJingxianYang'sdrama"Journeytothe
West".LinGuo'sreviewofShushenZhang's"NewJourneytotheWest Images", the article
comparesandanalyzes"NewJourneytotheWestPictures"andZhi Li's "Mr. Zhuowu Li
CriticizesJourneytotheWest"tofindoutthesimilaritiesanddifferencesinthinkingbetween
thetwoanddiscoverthedifferencesbetweenthetwo.Fromtheculturalchangesofthetimes
andthereformofcommentarymethods,itdemonstratesitssignificanceintextinterpretation

andobtainsaholisticandsystematicgraspofthecommentaryon"NewJourneytotheWest
Images".YangyangLi'spaper"ResearchonDingchenZhu'sCompilationofNovels", through
textualresearchonthetimeandinscriptionofDingchenZhu'scompilationofbooks,aswellas
thecontemporaryJiangxiliteratiwhosigned"Yangcheng",cametoaconclusion:DingchenZhu
wasalower‐classscholarborninthelateJiajingperiodoftheMingDynastyandactiveinthe
WanliperiodoftheMingDynasty.HisnativeplacewasLinchuan,Jiangxi.Therearecurrently
threenovelscompiledbyDingchenZhu:"ACommentaryontheHistoryoftheThreeKingdoms",
"TheBiographyoftheJourneytotheWestoftheTangSengofthe Quanxiang", and "The
BiographyoftheJourneytotheSouthoftheQuanxiangGuanyin".Inhermaster'sthesisof
"Journey to the West" story evolution and dissemination research, Wen Li analyzed the
disseminationcharacteristics,methods,andwaysofthestory‐carryinggenreofJourneytothe
Westindifferentperiods,andanalyzedthecommunicationmethodsandcharacteristicsinthe
fourdifferentcommunicationgenresofJourneytotheWestinpopular stories, talks, Yuan
drama,andnovels.Inaddition,shealsodiscussedtheadaptationofthenovel"Journeytothe
West"bycartoons,TVseries,andmoviesintheeraofmasscommunicationwiththeriseofnew
mediasuchascomputers,andanalyzedthepracticalsignificanceoffilmandtelevisiondramas
forthespreadofnovels.
2.2. ResearchontheThemeandCultureof"JourneytotheWest"
Thematic research belongs to the category of textual interpretation.Basedonthetext,it
presentstheinterpretationofvariousopinions,andmanyopinionscanberoughlyclassified
into political themes and philosophical themes. Junhua Li's "Journey to the West" theme
researchusesthemethodsoftextresearchandhistoricalexamination.BasedonShiHuand
Xun Lu's point of view of the game theory, he further supplements the analysis and
demonstrationandputsforwardtheviewthat"JourneytotheWest"isanentertainingnovel.
Jianwei Huang put forward a new interpretation through the carefulreadingofthetextof
"Journey to the West" in his book "Degrading Taoism, Laughing atBuddha,andChongru
Confucianism‐‐AStudyontheThemeofJourneytotheWest".Thisnovel,whichlookslikea
game,isbasicallyahaiku‐styleplaylist.ItinheritsthetraditionofancientChinesehaikudwarfs
satirizingthekingwithfunnyandwittylanguage.Itusesastrange methodtopersuade the
politiciansatthattime,nottofavorthebelievers,buttochoosethevirtuousandcapableandto
reusethetalents,inorderto"keepthecountryforever"and"theemperor'splanisforever".
Thethemeof"JourneytotheWest"istodegradeTaoism,ridiculeBuddhism,andworship
Confucianism.ItexposesTaoistwarlockswhoareconfusedandchaoticandexposesthefalse
compassion of Buddhist monks who take the lead and selfishness and then expose the
monarch'signoranceandvirtuousness,leadingtotheevilconsequencesoftreacherousandevil
inpower,andlettheworldtakeawarning.ZheYang's"JourneytotheWest"Taoistthought
researchmainlypointedoutthecultivationideain"JourneytotheWest",thatis,thecultivation
ofinneralchemyandtheyin‐yangandfive‐elementideasreflectedbytheteamoflearning
scripturesandthegodsanddemons.SunWukong,ZhuBajie,MonkSha,andothersallpracticed
theinneralchemymethod,andmanypoemsandtermsinthebookreflecttheinneralchemy
thought.Thepilgrimageteamisacombinationofyinandyangandthefiveelements.Morethan
onceinthebook,TaoisttermssuchasJinGong,MuMu,andHuangPoareusedtorefertoSun
Wukong,ZhuBajie,andShaSeng,buttheattributesofTangSengandBailongmaarenotclearly
explained,whichshowsthattheTaoistthoughtsinthebookarenotrigorous.Immortalsand
demonsalsocorrespondtotheyinandyangattributesofthefive elements, and each has
differentfunctions.NanZhang'spaper"The"Reality"and"Falsehood"ofJourneytotheWest
from the Perspective of Buddhist Philosophy, starting from the specific connotations of the
oppositesof"truth"and"falsehood"inBuddhistphilosophy,andtheoverallobservationand
specificanalysisof"JourneytotheWest"aremadetoexplorethedeepmeaningofthework.It
canbeseenthat"JourneytotheWest"hasaverycloseconnectionwithBuddhistphilosophy,

andtheartisticconceptionisrigorousandprofound.GuoqingZhao's"JourneytotheWest"and
ImmortalCulturebelievesthatpartof"JourneytotheWest"isaboutthepopularinneralchemy
techniquesincetheSongandYuanDynasties,whiletheotherpartisahiddencriticismofthe
emperorandsocialrealityatthattime.Thesetwoaspectsshouldnotbeexposeddirectly,so
theauthorhastakenprotectivemeasures,thatis,themethodofdeformationandexaggeration.
Ontheonehand,itturnstheculturallifeofthefairyintoastory,andontheotherhand,itturns
thesociallifeintoamonster.Deformationandexaggerationistheartisticprincipleof"Journey
totheWest",whichnotonlyservesthepurposeofprotectingtheauthor'ssafetybutalsohas
theaestheticeffectof"defamiliarization".
2.3. ResearchontheCharactersin"JourneytotheWest"
InFengZhu's"AnalysisoftheLiteratiSpiritoftheImageofSunWukong",hecarefullyreadthe
textof"JourneytotheWest"andanalyzedthepersonality,bearing,andspiritofthe"human"
containedintheimageofSunWukong.Thearticleexplainsthattheliteratispiritpresentedby
SunWukongisnotnecessarilytheintentionandoriginalintentionoftheauthorof"Journeyto
theWest".Itismorelikelythathistemperament,emotion,andthedepthsofhisthoughts,the
so‐called"subconsciousness",areunconsciously revealed,and theconnotation ofhis literati
spiritisanidealmodelanddoesnothaveuniversalsignificance. Wanxing Cai's master's
dissertationstartedfrom"JourneytotheWest",andanalyzedthedefinitionof"God".Atthe
same time, he looked at the genealogy of the gods of various religions (mainly Taoism and
Buddhism)before"JourneytotheWest"waswritten.Throughtheclassificationandinduction
of the gods in "Journey to the West", the images of the gods have four characteristics: The
systemofgodsishugeandcomplex,butnotconfusingatall;Allthegodsin"Journeytothe

culturalorigin,culturalconnotation,andvariousformsofexpressionoftheimageofZhuBajie,
which integrates animals, gods, and mortals, are objectively, comprehensively, and
meticulouslydiscussed.WeiHan'smaster'sthesis"ResearchontheImageofKingsinJourney
totheWest"studiestheimageofthe"king".Hehopestostudytheimagesoffourtypesofkings,
namely,godkings,humankings,spiritkings,andreligiousleaders,throughthestudyofthe
imagesofmanykingsin"JourneytotheWest".Throughtheresearch,itcanbeseenthatthe
author'simageofthesefourtypesofkingsislesspraisethancriticism.Byexaminingthevarious
kingsin"JourneytotheWest"fromtheaboveaspects,wecanseethattheauthorisactually
usingtheimagesofvariouskingstoshowpeopletherealityofMingsocietywithadazedking,
corruptrule,darkandunfairsociety,andlocaltyranny.Atthesametime,healsousedtheimage
ofSunWukong,theMonkeyKing,toreflecthisideologicalqualityandhisgooddesiretorebuild
apeacefulworld.
2.4. ResearchonNarrativeFunctionof"JourneytotheWest"
Ying Xue's "narrative techniquesand narrative methods‐‐on Andi Pu's research on the four
Chinesestrangebooks"pointedoutthatthesignificanceofAndiPu'snarratologicalresearch
onthe"fourstrangebooks"andhissystematicanalysisofthenarrativethoughtsinthemcan
besummarizedasfollows:"ChineseNarratology".Thearticlesummarizestheenlightenment
ofAndiPu's"ChineseNarratology"toChineseacademiccircles:HethinksaboutChineseMing
and Qing novels from the standpoint of an exotic cultural background,anddiscoversthe
modernvalueofthelong‐forgottenMingandQingcommentaries;Torealizethemodern
transformationofancientChineseliterarytheory,thekeyistofindthepointofconvergence

TiancaiDai's"AComparativeStudyofFaustandJourneytotheWestfromMulti‐dimensional
Perspectives" compares and analyzes the style and connotation of the two novels from the
dimensionsoftimeandspace,expressingthedifferentunderstandingsandthinkingoftheEast
andtheWesttowardslife,andshowingthedifferentculturalspiritsoftheEastandtheWest.
YanfeiGong's"OntheBlockinessofChineseandtheLinkageofEnglish:Taking"Journeytothe
West"and"Gulliver'sTravels"asExamples",selects"JourneytotheWest"andtheEnglishwork
"Gulliver'sTravels"similartoitseraascorpus.Itcomparesthetypicalexamplesentencesand
translationsoftheoriginalwork,focusingontheblockstructureofChineseandthehook
structureofEnglish,andconcludesthatthespatialcharacteristicsofChinesecanbetracedback
toChinesecharactersthatexpressmeaningbyshape.ThetemporalnatureofEnglishcanbe

"JourneytotheWest"Dramaand"JourneytotheWest"WuBen's"JourneytotheWest"byYang
JingxianofYuanDynastyand"JourneytotheWest"byWuChengen of Ming Dynasty, the
purposeoflearningscriptures,reflectiononlifeandsociety,theattitudetowardsreligion,and
thecharactersofthenovelsarecompared,andthereasonsforthesedifferencesaredrawn,
whicharenotonlyrelatedtotheauthor'ssocialbackgroundandcreativeguidingideology,but
also to the source of the subject matter of the work,richness,andapology,genre,capacity,
volume,andtheaudienceisrelated,andthedramahasacertaininfluenceonthenovel.Butthe

theories such as literature, drama, and film, she compares the differences between Chinese

Carnival",etc.,forcomparativeanalysis.Thearticlepointsoutthat"multiplesymbioses"isthe

"harmonybutdifference"isaninevitablecriterioninthecommunicationofliteraturebetween
differentcountriesandethnicgroups.Acknowledgingthestateofpluralismandsymbiosisand
respectingtheprincipleofculturaldifferencesisthelogicalstartingpointfortheharmonious
coexistenceofworldliteratureandnationalliterature.Thispapercomparesandanalyzesthe
relationshipbetweenthetwoliteraryworksandcreativethinking,aimingtoseethebigfrom
thesmall,writethegeneralfromthespecial,anddeducethecommonalityfromthepersonality
soastodrawtheimportantvalueofcreativethinkingtoliteraryworks.
2.6. ResearchontheTranslationof"JourneytotheWest"
AcomparativestudyofthediscoursemarkersinthetwoEnglishtranslationsofQiongliLi's
JourneytotheWest,themaincontentofthepaperisthesimilarities anddifferencesof the
discourse markers in the two translations and clarifies the differences between a western
scholarandanoverseassinologist'stranslation,therebyenrichingtranslationstudies.Finally,
itisproposedthattranslatorsshouldpayattentiontodiscoursemarkersinordertomakethe
translationmoreaccurateandtrue,andstudentsshouldmakegooduseofdiscoursemarkers
toobtaincoherentarticles.YumeiSunusedthemethodofin‐depthtranslationofthepoetryin
thefulltranslationofJennerandGuofanYuin"AComparativeStudyoftheTranslationofPoetry
inTwoEnglishVersionsofJourneytotheWestfromthePerspectiveofIn‐depthTranslation".
Through the difference between these two translation strategiesandthereasonsforthe
difference,itcanbeconcludedthatGuofanYu'spurposeistointroduceChineseculturetothe
Westernworld,whileJennerhopesthatWesternreaderscanenjoyreading.QingWan,inhis
researchontheEnglishtranslationof"JourneytotheWest"culturallyloadedappellations,has
alargenumberofappellationsin"JourneytotheWest",tryingtodiscussthetwobyJennerand
GuofanYu'sEnglishtranslationof"JourneytotheWest"appellations.Thetranslatedversion
retains the advantages and disadvantages of Confucianism, Buddhism,andTaoisminthese
threetypesofappellations,andhopestoaccuratelyanalyzetheinadequaciesofthetwoEnglish
translationsofJourneytotheWestinconveyingChineseculture through these research
methods.MaomaoJing's"JourneytotheWest"intwoEnglishtranslationsofthestudyof
hybridization‐takingtheEnglishtranslationofWillieandJennerasanexample"selectedtwo
EnglishtranslationsofMonkey,translatedbyBritishsinologistArthurWaleyinthe1940s,and
JourneytotheWest,translatedbyJennerinthe1970s.Accordingtotheclassificationofcultural
factorsinvolvedintranslationbythefamoustranslatorNida,acomparativeanalysisismade
onthehybridizationreflectedintheculturallevelinJourneytotheWest.Inthesestudies,the

comprehensivecomparativestudyofthetwoversions,andsummarizesthetranslationviews
andtranslationmethodsindifferentperiods.

JiaYaxiong'sresearchon"JourneytotheWest"muralsinMinleBoysTemple,tookthe"Journey
totheWest"muralsinMinleBoysTempleastheobjectofinvestigationandstudiedthecultural
backgroundofthe"Journeytothe West"murals intheHexiCorridor.Through analysisand
research,itisconcludedthatthemuralsof"JourneytotheWest"inMinleTongziTempleare
the result of the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures, thefusionofHancultureand
minorityculture,andtheresultofapopularculturedrivenbyeconomicfactors.Inthepaper

GrottoeswerecreatednolaterthantheMingandQingDynastiesinthetwenty‐seventhyearof
Qianlong'sreign.Themuralof"JourneytotheWest"intheGreatBuddhaTempleshouldbethe
productafterthenovel"JourneytotheWest"waswritten.Themuralsof"JourneytotheWest"
inTongziTempleshouldhavebeencreated20yearsagoinJiaqing,"inheriting"the"upper"of
themuralsintheGreatBuddhaTemple,and"initiating"the"lower"ofthemuralsintheDongda
Temple. Finally, he suggested that local tourism should be developedwiththethemeof
"JourneytotheWest"bymakingfulluseofthemuralsof"JourneytotheWest"topromotelocal
development.
3. OverseasDisseminationof"JourneytotheWest"
ThecountrywherethetranslationandpublicationofJourneytotheWestwasfirststudiedwas
Japan. The overseas dissemination of "Journey to the West" mainlyfocusesontranslation
research,MingandQingversionsresearch,andBuddhistZenthoughttoresearchinthenovel.
IntheWest,theearliesttranslatorwasSamuelWoodbridge,anAmericanmissionarytoChina,
whofirsttranslatedthestoryofJourneytotheWestintoEnglishin1895.Combiningthecross‐
languageandcross‐civilizationalvariationofVariation,heexploresthetranslationand
researchstatusofJourneytotheWestintheUnitedStatesfromthe1890stothe1980s,and
analyzes Woodbridge's translation of the first section and Guofan Yu's full translation. The
embodimentandapplicationofcreativerebellioninChinaandtheinterpretationmethodofPu
Andi'sinterpretationoftheWest,thevariationofthetextof"JourneytotheWest",and
discussesthecurrentstatusofthespreadof"JourneytotheWest"intheUnitedStatesfromthe
1980s to the present. Diyi Wu's "Research and Analysis of NakanoMiyoko'sJourneytothe
West"attemptstoanalyzethe"JourneytotheWest"fromtheperspectivesofprototypeand
prototypecriticism,commonsayingsandliterature,folklore,Taoistfolkbeliefs,thesymmetry
ofthestoryandthesecretofnumbers,andthefiveelementsofthought.Thereissystematic
careforthestoriesandtexts.Therearesomecommentsonsomeoftheviewsofsinologists
centeredonNakanoMiyoko.Theauthorusesmythology,anthropology,andsociologyto
examine Miyoko Nakano's views. She used common sayings and literature combined with
minoritysongs,etc.,torestorethetexttotheoriginalstage, and examined the relationship
between"JourneytotheWest"andfolklore.ShethengoesdeepintothemysticismofJourney

4. Conclusion
Theacademicresearchof"JourneytotheWest"mainlyfocusesonthestudyoftheauthorand
versionofthenovel"JourneytotheWest",theresearchonthethemeandcultureof"Journey
totheWest",thestudyofthecharactersin"JourneytotheWest",theimageandtherelationship
between"JourneytotheWest",researchonmurals,researchonthelegendof"Journeytothe
West",andresearchonoverseasdisseminationof"Journeytothe West". With the rapid
developmentofChina'seconomyandculturalself‐confidence,theresearchon"Journeytothe
West"hasattractedmoreandmoreattentionfromallwalksoflife. Therefore, the current
academicresearchon"JourneytotheWest"isinaperiodofprosperity.
