NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
As we usher in 2026, shifting trade and energy policies,
consumer health consciousness and sustainability
imperatives continue to shape the global oils and fats
market.
The inauguration in January of Donald Trump as US
president for a second term has heralded a new era of
trade uncertainty, with threats of taris and counter-
taris having an impact on trade ows of soyabeans,
rapeseed and their products between major producers
and importers such as Brazil, Canada, China, the EU and
the USA.
Meanwhile, leading sunowerseed and oil producer
Ukraine continues to be impacted by its ongoing war with
Russia, now in its third year, with no serious prospect of a
ceasere in sight.
While net-zero is the buzzword and stated aim of both
industry and countries alike, progress remains slow and
uneven.
Adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) - held up as
the airline industry’s most immediate tool for cutting
emissions - for example, remains low. SAF accounted
for just 0.3% of global jet fuel use in 2024 and production
needs to grow more than 100-fold by 2050 to meet net-
zero targets, according to industry estimates.
Meanwhile, lipid-based feedstocks - particularly waste
oils like used cooking oil (UCO) - will continue to be in high
demand for SAF and renewable diesel (HVO) production,
although concerns about fraudulent imports continue to
dog our industry.
On the food side, seed oils have come under increasing
public scrutiny in the USA since the appointment of
Robert F Kennedy Jr as US Secretary of Health, who has
claimed that they cause inammation and has raised the
idea of banning them.
The backlash is a reminder that sentiment, as well as
science, is a key driver of public opinion, something that
the palm oil industry knows all too well.
Major palm oil producers Indonesia and Malaysia have
been preparing for the much-anticipated introduction of
the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which will come
into force on 30 December – after a one-year delay.
With the goal of minimising the EU’s contribution to global
deforestation, the EUDR will also aect the soyabean
and oil market, and Oils & Fats International (OFI) will
continue to keep its readers updated on this and other
key regulations.
