PRINCIPALS REPORT
BANKSIA BULLETIN - 6 February 2020
Mt Martha Primary School strives to empower students to be acve learners who make a posive
impact in a changing world.
Our Mission is to ensure high quality and engaging learning program that builds
on the capability of every student.
Welcome Back to Mount Martha Primary School for 2020. I hope everyone
had a very enjoyable and resul holiday! 2020 promises to be another
fantasc school year and I am pleased with our very smooth start. It was
wonderful to see how happy and enthusiasc the students were as they
returned to school! The students have quickly seled in to their new classes.
Organisaon is a real focus for the rst few days as students become familiar
with the class and school rounes. On the rst two pupil free days, sta
updated training in management of anaphylaxis and made the most of
valuable curriculum planning and preparaon me for the year ahead.
For 2020 we have new sta join Mount Martha Primary School. Welcome to
Mr Joseph Turner, Mrs Megan Lazzar and Mr David Hobson. Welcome back
Mrs Marta Reardon and Mr Ross Hamaline who have returned to the school
aer being on leave in 2019. Welcome also Mrs Rebecca Richards who is
replacing Mrs Jill Bull while she is on leave this term. A sta list is in the
newsleer for informaon.
Our 2020 Preps started in their Prep classes on Tuesday! The rst day of
school is always a very excing day and they seled in very well. We wish
them a wonderful me at Mt Martha Primary School!
A huge welcome to our new students and families who are joining our school
community for 2020.
Year 1: Albie, Kwan & Charlize Year 2: Luke & Johnny Year 3: Elton Year

Emerging novel Coronavirus Outbreak - We will connue to forward the
informaon provided by the Department of Educaon to our school
community via Compass and the newsleer. The latest informaon is that
any student returning from mainland China (not including Hong Kong, Macau
and Taiwan) who was in mainland China on or aer 1st February 2020 is to be
isolated at home and should not aend school unl 14 days aer they were
last in mainland China. This isolaon is not retrospecve. It only applies to
students who were in mainland China on or aer 1st February.
Exisng 14 day isolaon advice sll applies following conrmed exposure to
any novel coronavirus case. Sta are connuing to ensure good hand and
respiratory hygiene processes are used in the classroom.

Bushre Preparedness - Our thoughts are with all those eected by the tragic bushres. Addional wellbeing
informaon is included in this newsleer. Mount Martha Primary School has an extensive emergency plan in place
including evacuaon and lock down procedures. It also includes working with emergency services who coordinate
acons in these events. The school is designated as a being in a Bushre At Riskarea and as such is closed on
designated Code Reddays.
Code Reddays are called a number of days in advance and communicated through the media and our school
processes. To avoid confusion once called Code Reddays are not reversed even if weather condions improve.
In smoke haze events the school will closely monitor air quality using the EPA Air Watch site and direct
observaon of local condions. Outdoor acvies may be restricted and events rescheduled. Asthma acon plans
will be followed and quick relief medicaon kept handy. Strategies will be in place in avoid smoke entering the
buildings.
Meet The Teacher. Establishing a relaonship and lines of communicaon with your childs teacher is an
important part of their educaon. To assist this we are having two Meet The Teachersessions. The rst is on
Tuesday 18th February for Years Four, Five and Six and Wednesday 19th February for Years Prep, One, Two and
Three. Bookings will be via Compass. More informaon about the booking process is included in the newsleer.
School Council elecons 2020 - Nominaons open on Monday 10th February for 4 parent vacancies on our School
Council. Forms will be available from the school oce. If you are an enthusiasc parent interested in geng more
involved and having a say in what our school is doing, or know someone who is, we would love to hear from you.
We are looking for people who are commied to improving the educaonal outcomes for all our students.
Eecve councils have a broad range of experience, skills and experse. Face-to-face and online training is also
available to help councillors develop the skills and knowledge for the job. Parents nd their involvement sasfying
and may also nd that their children feel a greater sense of belonging.
Nominaons close on Monday 17th February at 4pm. An elecon will be conducted should the number of
nominaons exceed the number of vacancies. You can contact me at the school if you have any queries.
I am really looking forward to another terric year in 2020!
Kind regards

19 February. Prep to Year 3 sessions will be on the Wednesday and the Year 4 to Year 6 sessions on the Tuesday.
Meet the Teacheris a great opportunity for parents to meet their childs teacher and to provide information that will

Bookings will open on Monday 10 February at 8am and will close on Monday 17 February at 2pm.
How to make a booking.
Parents can make bookings by clicking the 'Book Parent Teacher Interviews' button available next to their student's

section is highlighted in blue in the image below. If parents have multiple students at the school they can toggle
between the staff members their students are associated with using the dropdown menu available at the top right of
the screen, which is highlighted in red in the image below.

From Term 1, 2020 there is a new mobile phone policy for all government schools. The policy means phones
brought to school must be switched o and stored securely during the school day.
The aim of this policy is to provide:
a safe environment to learn without inappropriate mobile phone use (including cyberbullying) or distracons
greater opportunies for social interacon and physical acvity during recess and lunchmes.
The use of technology is important, but the risks and benets from its use need to be managed.
A copy of the school Personal Mobile Device Policy is available on the school website.

Introducing free pads and tampons in Government schools
The Victorian Government is providing free sanitary pads and tampons in every government school. This iniave
aims to:
Provide students with the condence that sanitary items will be readily accessible at school
Relieve students of sgma, anxiety and discomfort that can be associated with menstruaon and its
management
Ease the cost of living for families.
The use of sanitary items at school will be voluntary. Providing both sanitary pads and tampons allows students to
make a choice based on their own needs, cultural beliefs, maturity and parental preferences.
A dispensing unit has been installed in the Year 3 – 6 Girls toilet to allow easy access for students.

BEACH PROGRAM
What an amazing start to the year for all the Year 4 - 6 students who participated in the Water Safety program at Mt Martha
Beach. Students had a positive attitude during the Beach Program and of course the weather was reasonable for most of the
time.
Next week our Year 3 students commence their first Beach Program which will be a great memory for them.
The Beach Program cannot be conducted successfully without the support of parents who assisted with the walk down from
school, running beach activities, taking small groups for a walk session, judging some beach art creations and of course walking
back to school. If you are free and you can assist, please let your classroom teacher know.
SCHOOL SPORT VICTORIA TEAM ONLINE REGISTRATION PROCESS - 12 YEARS AND UNDER
Registraon to trial for AFL, Netball, Soccer, Hockey, Rugby and Basketball for state teams has tradionally started with
nominaons through their school to aend district trials.
School Sport Victoria (SSV) have advised that this process has now changed to an online registraon process. District trials will
no longer be held.
The SSV website www.ssv.vic.edu.au provides important informaon and a video on the process as well as applicaon forms
and must be visited.
Key points include:
1. Parents must consult with their Sport Teacher/Coordinator at the school to ensure their child has a high skill level to
trial and represent their school.
2. It is imperave that teachers will decide on your childs capability of represenng their school at a state level before
registering online.
3. This discussion with the school Sport Teacher is necessary as all students MUST get the Sport Teacher/Coordinator
and the Principal signature on their registraon form prior to aending a trial.
4. The Eventbrite cket, applicaon form signed by the Principal and Sport Teacher/Coordinator and proof of payment
must be handed to the Division Trial Coordinator on the day of the trial.
5. Applicants will be noed of arrangements for the Division trial once registraons have closed.
Note: Registraon for Division trails close on Friday March 1st, 2020
